Poverty Respectfully Submitted By: Daija Lovejoy Date: 2/18/2017 Goals & Objectives: Poverty, the state of being extremely poor Letting people know the facts and statistics about poverty Detailed online research and note taking Showcasing the information history and facts in a poem and photo essay Project Description: An original found poem based off of research on poverty with an inclusive photo essay. The photo essay will be based off of the East County areas that will correlate with the research. The research will include history, facts, and statistics. I will also create a weekly blog and update my weebly by adding in my senior project. Mentor: The mentor that I have chosen for my senior project would be Mr. Anderson. I chose him because he is a statistic teacher and he was a big help to my junior project. As a statistics teacher, Mr. Anderson will help me understand the stats I come upon. Material List: The items that I will need to complete my project will be a car, a professional camera, a laptop, construction colored paper, notebook, and printer. I will need a car to travel from city to city and a camera to take pictures of the poverty areas that I visit. The best pictures will be printed out and placed on construction colored paper. To access the research, I will need access to a laptop and a notebook for the notes I come upon. Procedure and Timeline: The steps that will allow me to start would be to first and foremost gather a map and see what direction I will go in. The cities that I will be taking pictures of is Brentwood, Oakley, Antioch, Pittsburg/Bay Point, Concord, and Walnut Creek. As of right now my car is in the shop, and I should be picking it up from the shop with in a week. That being the case, I have to work around not having a car and put in some serious research. By the first weekend in March 3/4, I want to visit Brentwood and Oakley because I hope by that time the weather will change and the sun will be out. On 3/8 I want to visit the city of Walnut Creek. On 3/12 I will visit Antioch. On 3/16 I will visit Pittsburg/Bay Point. On 3/20 I will visit my last East County city which is Concord. On 3/22 I want to pick out the very best pictures (5) from each city and put them on a flash drive to begin the printing process. I will be printing and cutting my pictures in the photo room on the dates of 3/23, 3/24, 3/37,3/28. I should also have a draft of my found poem by Tuesday 3/28. The final draft of my found poem will be printed on 3/31. On 4/3, I will gather the project materials that include colored construction paper for my photo essay and practice a voice over of my final found poem for my blog. On 4/5-4/8 I want to visit the cities for a second time and post my photo essay on telephone poles. On 4/9 I want to take pictures of my outcome and post those photos on my blog. By 4/10 I will start my KDR and complete by 4/17. On 5/1 I will build my presentation and rehearse by 5/17. On 5/22 I will present my senior project! See It/Believe It: I attracted myself to the topic because I originally wanted to something with the fast food industry but after much consideration, I chose my project topic to be poverty. This is because I have noticed that there is a huge percentage of poverty in the USA. People need to be made aware of that poverty should not be overlooked and that different social classes have different living environments and more accessibility over others. I will use photography to draw attention to the topic of poverty and I will also use my poetic sense of emotion to prove the purpose of the important issue. This is important to show people so that they can recognize the value of how art can express the crucial issue of poverty. Research It: The source that I will use would be web based and possibly books from a library. The research questions that I will ask would be, Which members of our community suffer the most? What cities in East County experience poverty? Why do these cities experience poverty? Are people in the community making it a better and safe environment? I hope to impact each city that I attend and hopefully everyone can come to together and make a change. The dates I will spend researching will be on 2/22-2/28. Interview & Observation: I will interview a random citizen that is perhaps walking around and willing to talk about the environment and how they feel poverty is expressed throughout East County cities. First and foremost I will explain my senior project and how interviewing them will complete one of my graduation requirements. I am hoping that the interview will take place between the dates of 4/5-4/8. I am the observer and I will observe my subject of poverty physically and mentally. Build It/Do It: I will construct my project by how much research I put in. The more research the better because after my research I can create my found poem. I want my poem to be long, powerful and meaningful. Throughout researching and creating my found poem I will drive through the cities of East County. I am going to print out the very best pictures. However, the best way to organize this would be to take pictures every weekend in two cities. My plan as of now is to research, research, research until my car is fixed and out the auto shop and to start blogging! Present It: I want to present my photos up on telephone phones around the East County cities that I visited. But each city will have different photos from the East County city selection that I have chosen. This is because each city has different living environments and conditions. I will showcase my work to the entire city and my audience will be the citizens, homeowners, workers, and visitors. My in-class presentation will be a powerpoint of my photos and the photos will also be presented into a photo album. I will also play the voice over of my poem. Reflect On It: I will reflect on my senior project by having the experience to learn everything there is to poverty. While working on my project, the most meaningful thing to me would have to be taking the time out to actually realize the differences and the accessibility that cities have over others. I also believe that prayer helps in many situations, and I will have to keep those that aren't living in the best environments in my prayers. As a student, artist, and activist, I want to grow into being more grateful because it will change the way I perceive situations. I plan to gage the impact of my project by showing others to be grateful as well. I also plan to gage the impact of my project from those who view it by creating a survey on my blog. The survey questions will include how each picture makes them feel (happy, sad, mad, grateful, etc.) and the last statement will conclude what is it that they are going to do in their community. Desired Outcome: The desired outcome that I want is for my audience to know why poverty is the way it is. My mission is to educate those that are not educated on the issue. I believe that a lot should be done with in the cities that have less resources because it is unfair that different cities have more accessibility over others and the citizens should take charge. The message needs to be brought up by one individual and that individual is me. Importance of project to you as an artist: The art medium I choose was because my speciality is in Photography and I really love writing poems. I believe that its significant to do a photo essay so that my audience can see the real life of poverty. In my opinion, writing a found poem is the best way to express the facts and history. Importance of project to you as a social activist: This topic is very important to me because I feel that there needs to be a voice to change and educate those that aren't educated on poverty. I am very to eager to get this project up and going so that it can speak to the citizens and touch them in a special way.
