Abstract

The purpose of this research paper is to show the importance of how

sports help children and people of poverty on a global scale. Sports help all

children socially, emotionally, physically, and academically develop. Studies

have shown that students playing sports are more likely to excel in

academics rather than the ones who stay out of sports. Brazil has

implemented sports programs in their roughest neighborhoods to encourage

participation in sports and to assist with academics. Professional athletes

are realizing the impact that their story can have on children living in

poverty. Some professional athletes have created programs to expose

children to sports in povern areas

Limitations

During this research essay the writer was limited to few sources and

only had three months to bring together all his findings. The researcher

cannot relate to his own opinion because he is an athlete and that would

make the paper biased. The researcher has also had friends that were born

into lower class homes who reached the professional level. The researcher is

limited to only certain communities in the world because not all the

communities in the world represent the research topic. Research is invalid in

North Korea because there are no sports available for the people.

The researcher was born and raised in Virginia Beach which is a part of

an immense region that values sports. Many athletes that play professional

sports have come from the Hampton Roads. The researcher will not

reference any local sources because of the biases. The researcher is not able

to compare the amount athletes who make it out of poverty to the athletes

who dont make it out because there is no way to count for the athletes who

dont make it out. The researcher also has a different view on sports than

the readers because he has come from an area which holds value on

athletics.

The researcher was limited to only two months two gather research

and one month to pull of his information together to form his essay. The

researcher was limited to only valid resources which were found either in the

Library or online. The researcher was not persuaded by any options

Sports Benefit People Who Suffer from Poverty

suggested to them by other people. If any information from a website or

book was accumulated and put into the essay was in the citations. The

researcher was limited to use citation machine because other citation

creation websites such as easy bib cost money.

Literature Review

Throughout modern times, athletes have used sports as an easy

accessible tool to push themselves out of poverty. To fully comprehend why

sports can be a pathway out of poverty you truly need to understand what it

means to live a life under poverty. Minorities are two-and-half-times more

likely to spend childhood under poverty than of those of Caucasian race.

Therefore, most of the professional athletes that made it out of poverty were

more likely to be a minority rather than Caucasian. Sports are also a great

source of keeping people of poverty off the streets and reducing the likely

hood of them becoming a criminal. The film Hoop Dreams supplys

significant evidence that sports can be a great pathway out of poverty for

minorities. Joe Frazier, making it out of the slums of Northern Philadelphia or

Marshall Faulk getting out of the projects in New Orleans, sports have always

shown us that it can exchange a life of poverty to a life of fortune and fame.

Global Perspective: Homeless children in poor foreign countries also

rely on sports as a way out of poverty. Some of the worlds roughest and

poorest neighborhoods are in Brazil. For the children living in the

neighborhoods soccer is the only option for escaping poverty and violence.
Sports Benefit People Who Suffer from Poverty
6

The children of Brazil dont have access to any other sports; however, the

other sports are over looked by soccer because of how popular it is. There

are no high school or college soccer programs, all the talent these kids

develop are all brewed on the street. Once the school days end the schools

clear out and the soccer plazas fill up. A Brazilian star player Adriano

Ribeiro, who was once one of the kids who lived in the lower-class

neighborhoods, has become a hero to all the Brazilian children after scoring

four goals in the first two games of the world cup tournament.

Sports builds character: Everyone knows that sports benefit

children physically but what most people dont realize is how it benefits them

socially. Sports are how children establish their identity, especially if they

excel at a sport at young age and gain a passion from the sport. Sports

increase childrens social intelligence because it teaches children how to

compete with other children while maintaining their composure. Sports

teach children how to be magnanimous in victory and gracious in defeat

which increases their level of maturity. Learning how to combine

competitiveness with integrity will help children acquire significant and

strenuous friendships. Sports also teach children how to play fairly and this

will help them in the future by gaining respect from other adults because of

their honesty. Sports are important even when children are in the pre-school

stage because it increases their motor skills. Parents need to help their

children by supporting them at their sporting events and by ensuring that

Sports Benefit People Who Suffer from Poverty
7

they are enjoying the sport they are playing. If children dont enjoy the sport

they are playing it could have a reverse effect and negatively affect them.

Positive way of relieving stress: Poverty causes a lot of stress and

a student center resolved on the idea that Sports is a safe way to relieve

stress. Three new sports programs were recently begun at the Alfa y Omega

Student Center in Nicaragua. The center director said that the purpose of

the teams is to keep children healthy, to help them relate with one another,

to discover their talents, and to make good use of their free time. With

sports and reading activities children were easily kept busy, a lot of the

children had challenged each other with group competitions. This let the

children be open minded and taught them how to interact with other

children. The centers staff says that it has been a positive experience.

Those who didn't like sports are now enjoying them as they see how other

children are also interested and dedicated to it. These sports are important

because they give children energy, it makes them feel important and gives

them something to look forward too every day. Without the center a lot of

children living in the area would have no daily motive and would have never

found their passion. The center director finishes with the community

speaks well of the center because they have seen we are here for the

children to give them moral and spiritual support at any time they need it."

Example of professional who came from poverty: Knowshon

Moreno who competed in the NFL for 6 years also had to overcome a tough
Sports Benefit People Who Suffer from Poverty
8

childhood and he became one of the most versatile backs in the NFL.

Knowshon Moreno grew up in poverty when his parents split up. He bounced

around various homeless shelters as a child with his father in New York City.

If it wasnt for some of his family in New Jersey who took him in, he would

have never had a chance to play the game. Once he moved he got into

organized football and his career went up hill from there. He had two

tremendous years at the University of Georgia then he was selected twelfth

overall in the 2009 NFL Draft. Moreno said if it wasnt for my grandma who

took me out of a horrific situation and put me in a better one, I mightve not

been alive today. Knowshon knows thinks of his family before every kickoff

and all the other things he had to go through to get to where hes at to get

his mind ready to settle for nothing but his best.

Introduction

Without inspiration, every realistic goal becomes impossible to

achieve. Many of the worlds greatest athletes came from low income

families. Most of the athletes wouldnt have made it to where they are today

if it wasnt for their rough past the athletes born into poverty saw

professional sports as the only way out. Growing up under in poverty is what

motivated these athletes every day to drive themselves to their potential

and if it wasnt for the inspiration they would never have the drive to excel in

something. Sports serves as a ladder out of poverty for homeless children.

Fans of sports do not realize how hard it is to become a professional

athlete, to make it to the highest level requires vigorous amounts of work.

The fans and bystanders watching sporting events dont know every athlete

back story. Only a minimal number of athletes can endure the grit of the

work that is required during the process of becoming a professional athlete.

Suffering from poverty can inject people with pain and agony. Athletes who

have fought through poverty can fight through adversities and become

immune to the grit that they face in their athletic career. Sports teach

homeless children how to compete and fight through loses, losing is just like

having a bad day you just need to keep your head up and keep fighting.

Being homeless is mentally tough on a person because it causes a lot

of stress and anxiety. Sports stand as a way for homeless people to take

their mind of off their life and just have a good time doing something they

love. Even the homeless athletes who didnt make it professional in their

sport learn a lot from competing. Sports build character and strengthen

childrens social skills such as respect, accountability, discipline, and hard

work. In todays world, these skills are necessities and are required for many

jobs.

Body

Sports teach children many things about life and it has a huge

impact on their character. Many children start life at a disadvantage because

they were born into poverty but there are many ways that they can change
Sports Benefit People Who Suffer from Poverty
10

their life. Sports is the smoothest transition into defeating poverty because

it builds character and teaches children about basic life essentials. It

provides one of the best opportunities for children to encounter rules and

social values. Children learn essential skills and values such as tolerance,

fairness, responsibility, being a team member, and self-control. Sport

provides the opportunity for children to acquire an appreciation for an active

lifestyle and develop a positive self-image. Sports also develop social skills

of managing success, disappointment, and learning respect for others. Many

people believe that coaches teach their players that winning is the only thing

that matters. If winning is the only thing that matters why does every team

shake hands after games or take a knee when an opponent is injured?

Sports are meant to bring teammates together and overcome the other

team. Sports define the need to get along well with others and be accepted

as part of a team (Robbins). Sports teach children life skills such as being

on time, accountable, responsible, and mature. Many kids that suffer from

poverty do not have the opportunity to learn from their parents because they

are working to supports their family. Coaches can play an integral role in

teaching their athletes life lessons.

Sports help children with their social and physical development.

We are finding that individual students who participate in sports are less

likely to be hostile or antagonistic toward other students regardless of their

race or ethnicity, (Rhodes) said Jomills Braddock II, director of the University

of Miami's Center for Research on Sport in Society. Sports are a way for
Sports Benefit People Who Suffer from Poverty
11

children to get the exercise they need to grow. Sports and exercise is

important at the pre-school stage because it increases their motor skills.

Before the age of six, exercise include age appropriate activities such as tag

or keep away because they are simple games to learn which teach the basic

concepts of interacting with others. After the age of six, structured sports,

like basketball and soccer, are a place where children start to learn more

complex rules. Sports are where many children establish their identity,

especially if they excel at a sport at young age and gain a passion from the

sport. Sports teach children how to interact with other and help create

friendships. In many cases, children living in poverty lack the opportunity to

be able to participate in sports.

Since physical activity is beneficial to children we need to have

programs where all children can participate. The Alfa y Omega Student

Center in Nicaragua recently began multiple sports programs. The center

director said that the purpose of the teams is to keep children healthy, to

help them relate with one another, to discover their talents, and to make

good use of their free time (How Do Sports Help). There are many

competitions held in the center because of available opportunities such as

reading activities and sports. This is a good way how to teach children how

to lose and win, the centers staff says that it has been a positive experience.

Those who didn't like sports are now enjoying them as they see how other

children are also interested and dedicated to it. These sports are important

because they make children feel important and it gives them something to

look forward to every day. The center director last comment was the

community speaks well of the center because they have seen we are here

for the children to give them moral and spiritual support at any time they

need it" (How Do Sports Help).

Many athletes give back to their community because they know

children in their community have the same dream as them and they want to

help them succeed. Rahul Pol first struggled with addiction while he was

living on the streets but he fought through the struggle with the help of

sports. This has led him to start an organization that is dedicated to using

sports to help young addicts. In Mexico, a program has been implemented to

teach healthy habits for children in vulnerable communities. Some of the

worlds roughest and poorest neighborhoods are in Brazil. In Brazil, they

have devised numerous programs that successfully integrate sports and

education. The program Rio fit for the Olympic' allows districts with low

educational test scores access free recreational activities that are led by

experienced coaches. A new public sports facility provides low-income

students who have exceptional sports skills with quality sports training

equipment. For the children living in the neighborhoods soccer is the only

option for escaping poverty and violence. There are no high school or

college soccer programs, children develop their talents in the soccer plazas.

Once the school days end the schools clear out and the soccer plazas fill up.

A Brazilian star player Adriano Ribeiro, who was once one of the kids who

lived in the lower-class neighborhoods, has become a hero to all the Brazilian

children after scoring four goals in the first two games of the world cup

tournament. He has also held various soccer camps in areas that contain a

lot of poverty and has gave many children the chance to display their talent.

Hoop Dreams is a movie that shows significant evidence that sports

can be a great pathway out of poverty for minorities. Since sports were

born, athletes have always used sports as an easy accessible tool to help

themselves out of poverty. The film documents the life and struggles of

Arthur Agee and William Gates. They both grew up in the violent streets of

North Side Chicago in the 1970s and 1980s. William lived in the Cabrini-

Green public housing projects and Arthur lived in the crime ridden West

Garfield Park. This film helps people realize that sports can switch someone

who has a life under poverty to a life of fame and fortune. To fully

understand why sports can be a pathway out of poverty, first you need to

truly understand what it means to live a life under poverty. Minorities are

two-and-half-times more likely to spend childhood under poverty than of

those of Caucasian race. Sports are also a great source of keeping them off

the streets and reducing the likely hood of them becoming a criminal.

Sports benefit children in many ways but can have a significant

positive affect on childrens academic performances. A study of middle

school students by the American College of Sports Medicine discovered that

students who performed best on fitness tests also performed thirty percent

higher academically than less fit students. The athletic test was based off
Sports Benefit People Who Suffer from Poverty
14

aerobic capacity, abdominal strength, upper body strength, and flexibility.

The athletes academics were based off the grades they received in all their

classes within the same year they completed the athletic tests. Their grades

in school have also been proven to increase the longer they continue to be

physically active. Sports provide students with skills which carry over into

the classroom such as time management and organizational skills. These

skills help students to perform higher academically. Howell Wechsler,

director of the Division of Adolescent and School Health for the Centers for

Disease Control, reviewed 50 studies that examined the effect of school-

based physical activity on academic performance and discovered that half of

the studies showed positive associations and virtually none of the research

demonstrated any negative impact (Bliss). This study shows evidence of

how being active will not only help childrens overall development.

Children who are active in school sports are healthier and are more

confident in themselves and children who are not active in school sports tend

to be more obese. When children are involved in school sports, it provides

children with a sense of belonging. In every school system throughout the

United States there is a minimal grade point average needed to be able to

play on a sports teams. This requires the children to maintain their focus in

school so they can ensure themselves the opportunity to compete with their

team.
Sports Benefit People Who Suffer from Poverty

"We are finding that individual students who participate in sports

are less likely to be hostile or antagonistic toward other students regardless

of their race or ethnicity" (Sports have Positive Effect). A national study has

proven that students who participate in sports are more likely to graduate

compared to someone who doesnt participate in sports. Many students in

America often lose interest in academics and the thought of dropping out

often pops into the heads of those kids who participate in sports. The

students in school who dont participate in school athletics have a greater

chance to not graduate because they have no motive to. They see

themselves in the future in the same place even if they do or do not

graduate from high school. Without sports many students wont find the

motivation they need to stay focused and diligent to attain good grades in

school. Athletic competition does not make a student smarter, the authors

argue that the lessons learned in athletics, combined with the knowledge

that they must do well in school to participate, improves students

persistence and chances for success (Lawrence).

Lebron James a professional basketball player from Akron, Ohio

dealt with poverty for most of his childhood. His mother struggled paying

her rent and she knew she need to keep Lebron of the violent streets.

Lebron spent most of his elementary school life moving apartment to

apartment. The Walkers took him in fourth grade for 18 months then made

an agreement with Lebrons mother to help her pay the rent. Lebron had

every excuse to enter the streets but when he learned about the games
Sports Benefit People Who Suffer from Poverty
16

Basketball and Football his life changed. He gained a passion for both sports

and they taught him a lot about character, accountability, and it is also

where he found his role models. Lebron said I was not supposed to be here

(Deans) after he won his second NBA championship.

During football games when athletes make good plays, the

spectators do not know the athletes background. Tyrann Mathieu, Dez

Bryant, and Michael Oher are NFL players who had to overcome poverty to

become successful. For example, Tyrann Mathieus life changed the day his

aunt and uncle decided to adopt him. His father was in jail most of his life.

He didnt have much contact with his mother, so his grandmother took him

in. Unfortunately, his grandmother died when he was very young. He had

nowhere else to go when his aunt and uncle took him in. They protected him

from his fathers violent past. Tyrann learned from his aunt and uncle what a

loving family looked like. His cousins become his brothers and sisters. He

played football and other sports with them which led to him playing in high

school, college, and professional. Mathieu, who was named a Heisman

Trophy finalist and won the Chuck Bednarik Award as the country's top

defensive player as a sophomore, said his troubled childhood helped him

become the player he is today (Schlabach).

According to an ex-scout, Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant's

background was the worst he had seen coming into the league (Schwab).

Dez Bryant didnt have a stable life and got into trouble most of his life. His
Sports Benefit People Who Suffer from Poverty
17

mother gave birth to him when she was 14 years old. She was also in jail

some of his childhood where he had live with other people. Dez learned to

steal and take what do needed to survive his life in poverty. Dez never

learned how to be responsible or how to value his life including his playing

talent. He almost threw his career away with his behavior; however, the

Cowboys football coach took him on. The team gave him boundaries which

he had to live within. They also gave him a curfew and a security guard.

They helped him to change to his life and to turn it around.

The Blind Side is another great example because Michael Ohers life

was out of control and, he didnt have much potential until he found people

that looked out for him and cared for him. Before Michael Oher was looked

after by the Tuohys, he was living a horrific life in severe poverty. He never

participated in organized sports and he also did not value his education.

When the Tuohy family first met him, they took care of his basic needs and

while doing so they found a hidden talent. They put him on the schools

football team and he turned out to be a heavily recruited by many division

one college and universities. He still had trouble in school; however, his

grades improved significantly when he started football with the help of a

tutor. Michael turned out to be a great player in the NFL and the Tuohy

family set him up to be able to make something out himself after college.

Just imagine where he would be now if he would of never ran into the Tuohy

family. He would have never found his hidden talent on the field and he also

never would have received a valuable education. Football was the reason
Sports Benefit People Who Suffer from Poverty
18

why he worked. Without the Tuohy family, he would just be another person

on the side of the streets suffering from poverty.

Sports not only help men with the stress of poverty but sports have

also bettered the life of women. There is an organization that has been

working in 20 countries to empower women through sports, the name of the

organization is Women Win. Women Win believes that if women compete in

athletic they can be respected equally as men in lesser developed countries.

When you give girls a safe place to play, they learn things like teamwork

and communication, and they learn to set goals by themselves or with a

team (Bellomy). Women Win is showing that women under poverty also

learn from sports by learning how to set goals, communicate, and work

together. For girls and women in developing countries, famous female

athletes are role models. In many developing countries women are

discriminated and by viewing womens capability in sports can decrease the

discrimination. When women gain respect because of their athletic abilities,

they are seen more equal to men so this allows them to receive the same

education. Women are often looked down upon by men in developing

countries and sports is a great way to gain their respect.

Conclusion

Sports significantly increase the chances for young children to climb

out of poverty and become a successful person. Sports teach children

important life lessons which builds character and sets them up for success in
Sports Benefit People Who Suffer from Poverty
19

their future. Sports teach children life skills such as being on time,

accountability, and responsibility. Sports provide one of the best

opportunities for children to encounter rules and social values. Sports

provides the opportunity for children to acquire appreciation for an active

lifestyle and develops a positive self-image.

Sports help children with their physical and social development. Sports

teach children how to interact with others and create friendships while

establishing their identity. Sports help children find motivation for academics

and makes them see the benefits of education. The children that participate

in sports learn management and organizational skills that carries over to the

classroom. Without inspiration, every realistic goal becomes impossible,

sports are a great source for children to find motivation.
