Chopin, Kate, and Nancy A. Walker. The Awakening: Complete, Authoritative Text with
Biographical and Historical Contexts, Critical History, and Essays from Five
Contemporary Critical Perspectives. Boston: Bedford Books of St. Martin's Press, 1993.
Print.
This book is a case study analyzing Kate Chopins works and biographical information. It
is divided into two parts, the first part is the introduction, biography, and historical contexts; and
the second part has feminist criticism, bibliography and historical perspectives. This book talks
about feminism and female talent; relating this to The Story of An Hour could show that
Chopin may be considered a feminist and she therefore, included feminism in that story.
The author is Nancy A. Walker and she is qualified, I dont believe the research is biased.
It is a scholarly source and reliable source. It provides the information I need to take on the
feminist approach and proving feminism exists in the story. It is helpful, but at the same time it is
not because the article is directed mainly towards the story called The Awakening. Further

Queries 61.4 (2014): 580-581. Academic Search Complete. Web. 21 Feb. 2017.
This article mainly talks about Chopins The Story of an Hour. Doloff states that Chopin
specifically chose the main character's name to foreshadow the marriage and the plot of the story,
which is Mallard. Mallard is the name of the protagonist and mean poor health which
foreshadows the heart problems and future death. Even though its a short story, Chopin chose
distinctive words to foreshadow and symbolize certain things. Choosing a name to foreshadow
The author is Steven Doloff and I would consider him to be qualified, I dont believe the
research is biased. It is a scholarly source and reliable source. It provides the information I need
to prove the symbolic truth in the story. I would consider it to be helpful, since I learned new
information about the story and it is directed to the main story and not another novel written by
Fox, Heather. "Mapping Spatial Consciousness In Kate Chopin's Bayou Folk Stories." South: A
Scholarly Journal 48.1 (2015): 108-128. Academic Search Complete. Web. 21 Feb. 2017.
This is an article written to include criticisms of Kate Chopins work; the work of Bayou
Folk Stories, a short story collection. This article talks about the relationships and characters
found in the several short stories, the topographical aspects and the role of the human body. Fox
writes that Chopin develops her characters to show the construction and deconstruction of them
and allows the reader to visualize. These details are found in The Story of an Hour, where we
see the construction and deconstruction of the main character, and can visualize the setting of the
story. Fox mainly talked about the narrative spatiality and that all the stories come together and
believe the research is biased. It is a scholarly source and reliable source. It provides the
information I need to talk about the characters and see how Chopins other characters and novels
are. It is helpful to an extent. Since, its directed to the Bayou short stories it is hard to use the
information for The Story of an Hour. Further research needs to be done; however, it is a start.
Tucker, Susan. A Solitary Soul: The Life of Kate Chopin. The English Journal, vol. 85, no. 3,
This article really unveils the truth of Kate Chopin. It is not a biography, just short,
biographical information to prove the argument and relation to The Awakening novel. In this
article, the author reveals that Chopin has faced a lot of deaths of all of her loved ones and
became a strong, independent woman raising several children and maintaining a writing career.
This life is put into the The Story of an Hour story, where the main character, Mrs. Mallard,
suffers health problems, her husband dies in a train accident like Chopins father and Mrs.
Mallard dreams of her new independence and lust for freedom, like Chopins independence.
The author is Susan Tucker and I would consider her to be qualified, I dont believe the
research is biased. It is a scholarly source and reliable source. It provides a lot of information I
need to help reveal more truth about the story and the character of Mrs. Mallard. It also, helps me
see why Chopin wrote the way she did and why she included certain aspects in the story. It is

life in regards to the stories she writes with female leads and protagonists. According to Emily
Toths information, the professor, she states that Chopin grew up without a male or fatherly
figure; she was surrounded by women for most of her life. Not having a male role in her life
presented Chopin on having these feminist bias ideas. However, Chopin wasnt this perfect
feminist, she didnt have proper feminity since; she smoked in public and had some
uncharacteristic qualities. Writing Story of an Hour, reveals a male figures death and a dreaming
woman who was truly unhappy, which represent moments of Kate Chopins life.
The author is Emily Toth and published in Publishers Weekly. I would consider the author
to be qualified to write this and it seems like a valid source and correct information. The article
could be somewhat biased, but I think Toth took on a harsh approach and was criticizing
Chopins work. It is a scholarly source and reliable source. It provides the information I need to
take on the feminist approach and proving feminism exists in the story. Some information is hard
to use because some questions are left unanswered and not enough explanation.
