California race roiled by
rumors of inappropriate behavior
SACRAMENTO The closely fought race to lead the
Democratic Party in one of the nations most Democratic
states took an unusual turn after a leading
candidate said hes the target of false
rumors about inappropriate behavior
with teenage boys.
Details are vague and no one has pin-
pointed the source of the salacious
claims. But theyve added unexpected
drama to a little-watched contest that was
shaping up as a duel between Bernie
Eric Bauman Sanders loyalists and the partys estab-
lishment wing.
The allegations were raised in an email Sunday sent to
thousands of state Democrats who will pick the next party
chair at a May 20 convention.
State party vice chair Eric Bauman, one of two leading
candidates for the top job, wrote that supporters making
phone calls on his behalf last week heard from some dele-
gates that he has been engaging in inappropriate behav-
ior with 14- and 16-year-old boys.
Bauman wrote that he heard the despicable lies again
last weekend, from another supporter. His chief rival in the
race, activist Kimberly Ellis, said she was shocked and sad-
dened by Baumans email, and denounced any cruel malign-
ing of someones character.

Republicans are advertising too. The American Action
Network, with links to House GOP leaders, is advertising
nationally and in Ryans district promoting the bill.
Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., was set to appear on ABCs
Jimmy Kimmel Live after saying any GOP bill must pass
the Jimmy Kimmel test. The talk show host last week
delivered a tearful monologue describing life-saving heart
surgery his newborn son had received and saying lawmak-
ers must help people afford health care.
LOOKING AHEAD
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office is expect-
ed to release its analysis of the House bill this month. It
projected that an earlier version of the legislation would
toss 24 million people off health coverage, a damaging
blow to the GOP that made it harder for them to pass the
bill.
No one is certain when the Senate might write and pass
its bill, though some following the process think that
could come by July 4.
