Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Karachi

Introduction to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre:

JPMC is a Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre. It had humble beginning
in 1939 as a Royal Air Force Base Hospital, and now it is a tertiary care &
teaching state of the art hospital. The JPMC has the legacy of hard work,
dedication and determination traceable to the pre-partition times when a
small 80 bed hospital was built in the outskirts of the city. In 1942 the
hospital was taken over by the Royal Air Force to provide health care
facilities to the armed forces in Karachi dining the Second World.

In January 1948 the Pakistan Central Hospital, as it was then called, invited
the Father of the Nation. Following that it was named as Jinnah Central
Hospital with a pledged to the Father of the Nation to provide health care to
every citizen of the country irrespective of cast and creed. Let me
unequivocally say that Jinnah Central Hospital was the First institution in the
entire country named after the Father of the Nation. During following
yeses several special care units were evolved including Cardiovascular,
Pediatrics, College of Nursing and School of physiotherapy. However a
significant milestone was laid when Indiana University established BASIC
MEDICAL SCIENCES INSTITUTE (BMSI) in late 50s EMSI Provided
Postgraduate University training in Basic Medical subjects where talented
students of this institute were awarded M. Phil degree by the Karachi
University and scholarship for Ph.D. at Indiana University. With the start of
BMSI, Jinnah Central Hospital was upgraded to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical
Centre. In 1964 College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP)
was started with efforts of late General WAK Burke. Professors of BMSJ at
JPMC provided teaching and training of CPSP fellows in all basic medical
sciences subjects.

Presently have the hospital 1185 bed strength 28 clinical Departments and
17 non clinical departments teaching school for Nurses, Para medical
Physiotherapy Occupational Therapy etc. In 1972 with the start of Sindh
Medical College (SMC) clinical training and teaching was imparted to
undergraduate medical students. Every tear about 300 SMC medical
graduates are trained and successful graduates are awarded House Job at
JPMC.

The infrastructure of JPMC has immensely changed from old barracks to new
wards. The has been very generously contributed by the philanthropists at
Karachi The names of Patient Aid Foundation, TABA Foundation, Medicine and
Endocrine Foundation, Eye Care Society, Cancer Foundation and Radiology
Aid Foundation deserve mention on top of the list. For the record let me
inform entire country that JPMC has so far produced Postgraduate doctors
and Nurses. It had contributed to medical research and published Annals of
JPMC a regular Journal based on the Hospital research. JPMC is a tertiary care
hospital and several years back the opening of a filter clinic was considered
essential where initial screening of the patients could be carried out. This
year the building was inaugurated by Honorable Minister of Health Mr.
Muhammad Nasir Khan and soon after the filter Clinic was made functional
-where patients with minor medical problems are seen for all six days by
consultants of three medical units. A challenging task of assessing the health
damage by oil spill from the vessel Tasman spirit was awarded by WHO and
