AN Expanded kitchen gains rounded,
raised island and windowed walls

D
WISH LIST esigner Therese Kenney of Drury Designs’
solution was to eliminate the peninsula
• Two sinks—a main between the kitchen and the dining room
one plus a prep one and incorporate that space into the kitchen
• P rofessional-style to take advantage of the dining room’s spacious
cooktop windows and to gain more work space. Kenney’s next
• Double ovens step was to design a very long island with room for a
cooktop at the work end and near the main sink, ov-
ens and an existing refrigerator that couldn’t be relocated. But instead of making
the island just one long expanse, she rounded a section by the dining room win-
dows, raised it up, installed a secondary sink for prep work and made the far end
a place where the couple could dine and where one of them could cook without
getting in the way of the other at the more serious, busy work end. “The arrange-
ment provided enough space so they could both work at the same time without
getting into each other’s way,” says Kenney.
The warm, dark ambience of the room comes from its cherry cabinets, tan
speckled-granite countertops and a cream-colored porcelain floor. “The wife didn’t
want very dark wood but something in the medium range, so that the room would be
light and cheerful,” says Kenney. Because she also didn’t want a lot of ornamentation ABOVE: An island with DESIGNER: DIMENSIONS: 23' x 11½' PRODUCTS USED: • Dishwasher: Existing
