Dear Apple Inc:

Hello, our names are Grace Levatino, Morgan McHaney, and Grace Lawley and we are
freshman at Austin High School and are part of the Academy of Global Studies. We are doing a
geometry project over the dimensional change, volume, and surface area of a package. Our
driving question is to find a solution to how we as earth friendly global citizens could design
product packaging that considers the perspective of both the consumers and manufacturers. We
chose to modify the packaging used on iPhones. We knew that picking an Apple product was
going to be a challenge because it is already very efficient and so widely liked, but we knew we
were up for the task. We noticed right away when examining the products packaging that there
were some obvious changes that needed to be made. We love the products that your company
makes and would like to share some suggestions on the design that we think will make it more
eco-friendly and will benefit the the company.

In order to carry out our project we first calculated the dimensions of the original packaging.
This included finding the volume, surface area, and wasted airspace of the product. The first step
we took was to find the volume of the entire package, which we calculated as 592.88 cm3. We
then calculate the total volume of the products inside the packaging, which include the volume of
the phone, headphones, charger box, and charger cord. The total of these volumes was 153.34
cm3. We obviously know that having everything stacked and stuck into a box is not a realistic
option, but there is approximately 439.54 cm3 of wasted air space! Therefore 74% of the space in
the box is wasted or being filled with unnecessary cardboard, and only 36% of it is holding the
product itself. Our design reduces the use of airspace and the amount of cardboard used. These
results made us realize we need to make a smaller more compact box that uses less material.

To try and address the problems we found with the original packaging we made a design that is
eco friendly and will be efficient for customer. The new product packaging design we made is
close to the original shape design used before, but cuts down on wasted space and the amount of
materials used. The new shape of our package includes curved edges to match the shape of the
the iPhone and reduces materials that were used to on the lid and headphone container. We
propose that instead of having a lid that fits on top of the box, there can be a lid that closes
magnetically. The original surface area of lid was around 347.75 cm2 and the new lids surface
area is 127.5 cm2, this reduces the amount of cardboard used by 63.34%. The other suggestion
we suggest is to make a headphones case that can also act as a phone cleaner. This could be a
small pouch that held the headphones and would be made using the material of a phone cleaner.
These changes that we made to your product are only to benefit the company and the earth. We
hope you consider our suggestions and email with feedback.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Grace Levantino Morgan Mchaney Grace Lawley
