Dear CEO Maxwell:
I am writing to request that you reject the proposed cell tower at Eleanor Roosevelt
High School in no uncertain terms.
The process followed by Milestone Communications has shown a lack of respect for
community engagement and a complete dismissal of community concerns. The very
location of one meeting showed a clear insensitivity to the communitys views.
Milestones decision to host a meeting outside of the high school and city of Greenbelt
limited local participation by design. There was no prior notification to me or the Board
of Education, which prohibited my own participation since the meeting was scheduled
the same night as a Board meeting. It was also brought to my attention that Milestone
did not respond to the Greenbelt City Council when its members sought a meeting to
discuss their concerns.
Although the contract predates our tenure, this process has not met our standards for
transparency, open communication and meaningful stakeholder engagement. Before
Milestone proceeds with the tower at Eleanor Roosevelt or at any other school in our
system, we must re-examine whether this contract best meets the needs of our students,
parents and communities.
While local school communities are asked to accept cell phone towers, they receive no
direct benefit. This issue deserves more consideration by the Administration and
Board. Administrative Procedure 0800 calls for community input. The community has
spoken on Milestones shortcomings in this area. Now, as the elected Board of
Education member, so have I.
I ask that you reject this proposal immediately.
