I find my inspiration by trying new things. This semester my choice of a
new subject was ceramics. I learned to play with my hands. Making
tangible items that are usable for everyday life was a great success
and enjoyment. We used materials like clay, the wheel, hands, and
other tools to create texture and shape. Some techniques I used was
wedging the clay to get rid of bubbles, cone and dome the clay to
make the clay centered on the wheel, and pulling the clay using my
fingers on the inside and out of the cylinder. Some formal elements of
ceramics are shape, form, space, color, texture, balance, and
proportion and scale. Last year I took a trip to China and it sparked my
interest in ceramics. Ceramics traces back to 17,000-18,000 years ago.
The use of porcelain and celadon glaze are very prominent. In my class
today, I have not used porcelain, but hope to in the future. Celadon
was a very popular glaze I used and hope to continue making pottery
in the future.
