JAGADGURU SRI SANKARACARYA SWAMIGAL OF KANCHI

The RAM AYAN A and the M AHABHARATA are two of the w orld's greatest epics.
The protagonists in both exem plify the code of conduct that people m ust endeavour
to follow. Though both epics were com posed in Sanskrit, they have been translated
into alm ost all the regional languages of our country, and also into several foreign
languages.

K am ban, the em peror of poets, hailing from Therazhundur of Thanjavur district,

brought the Ram ayana to the people of Tamil N adu in Tamil verse, enabling everyone
to understand it.

Dr H Venkataram ana H ande has now rendered K am ban s w ork into English prose,
to m ake it accessible to people all over the world and to arouse their interest in the
epic. We are happy that the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, w hich has published several
good books, has com e forward to publish this one, too.

M ay the w riter of this book as well as those w ho read it, receive the grace of Lord
Rama.

N arayanasm riti.
