Abstract

Introduction

The word "pornography" comes from the Greek words "porno" and "graphia" meaning
"depictions of the activities of whores." In common parlance, it usually means, "material
that is sexually explicit and intended primarily for the purpose of sexual arousal." Online
pornography has now become a burning issue as it is a root cause for many evils and sexual
abuses in society. Adolescent become easy prey for the ill effects of the internet
pornography. Many website attracts and lure the students and young people which end up
in addict to pornography. The evil influence of pornography often leads the students to
illegal acts and changes their basic behavior to a great extent. The issue of pornography has
invited the international attentions of administrators and certain measures have been
initiated to combat them.

Purpose of the study

The purpose of the study is to understand the attitude of the adolescents on Pornography.
The opinion of adolescent / teen agers is to be taken in to consideration for evolving a
strategy to combat the pornography. The Psychological attitudes and anxiety of the youth
on sexual attraction cannot be simply brushed aside. While at one end social scientists are
advocating for sex education at school level, is there a need to combat the measures of
pornography which attempts to clear the myth of sex and conceptual understanding of
human body and pars thereof.

Design, methodology and approach of the study

It is an empirical study conducted at four Internet browsing centres at Neyveli. The target
population for the purpose of the study was divided into four groups namely (1) Teenagers
under the age 19 (2) Young person in the age group of 19-25 (3) Young adult in 26-40 (4)
Adult in the age group of 40-50. 20 samples were collected from each group. The structured
questionnaire in Tamil language is distributed to the internet users at the said browsing
centres. Many questions were incorporated dealing with the effects of pornography.
Random sampling method is employed for data collection from the respondents. Certain
hypotheses were framed for the study. The primary data collected from the respondents
were treated statistically with tools like Chi square analysis, percentage analysis.

Findings

The findings of the study revealed different psychological attitude and effects of the
pornography. The intensity and severity of the issue differs from age groups and the views
of the groups are also differs.

Research limitations

As the study is confined and limited to 80 samples from 4 age groups due to time constraint

the result could be generalized with care. Also the conditions imposed by the local

administration also plays dominant role in combating the pornography. The implication of

the study helps the administrators and policy framers to evolve a strategy to overcome the

effects of pornography.

Practical implications

The results of the study reveal certain practical implications for implementation. The

conceptual understanding about sex and pornography and mental attitude of different

groups in addressing the issue also needs a thorough change. Attitudinal change is also

advocated to combat the effect of pornography
