ErnestoChe Guevara

Ernesto Che Guevara was born on June 14, 1928 to parents Ernesto Guevara

Lynch and Celia de la Serna and Llosa. He was the oldest of five children. His siblings

were Roberto, Juan Martn, Ana Mara, and Celia. Ernesto Che Guevara was born in

Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. As a child, Guevara was introduced to the expression of

very liberal political beliefs. He also developed an affinity for reading and enjoyed the

writings of political leaders, including Karl Marx, William Faulkner, and Andre Gide.

Along with reading, a young Guevara enjoyed sports and other athletic activities to pass

time during his highschool years. After finishing his preliminary education, he attended

the University of Buenos Aires, where he studied medicine. Over the time of his college

career, Guevara took two trips that would prove to be instrumental in his later life. His

first expedition was a 4,500 kilometer bike ride across the rural regions of North

Argentina; the second was a continental motorcycle ride across South America, along

with a friend. These trips were eye-opening and revealed poor economic conditions

and exploitation of those in poverty. While on the trip, Guevara took notes of what he

saw and created it into a book titled, The Motorcycle Diaries, which turned into a New

York Times bestseller. In 1953, he received his medical degree and embarked on

another journey throughout Argentina and eventually into Bolivia and Guatemala to

express his political beliefs against capitalism. For a short time, he found employment

in Mexico Citys General Hospital. Over the time he spent working there, he became

troubled by the amount of poverty and the economy of the area. During this time, his

interest in Marxism grew. In 1955, Guevara was introduced to the Cuban revolutionary

leader Fidel Castro. Guevara then gave up medicine and chose to join Castro in the

fight against imperialism. He learned guerrilla military tactics and began assisting
Castro in overthrowing the Batista government in Cuba. Fidel Castros small army

began gaining popularity with peasants and the middle class in Cuba and many battles

against the government took place. As the battles continued, Guevara played crucial

roles and took the position of a commander at the La Cabaa Fortress Prison, where

his job was to punish traitors, informants, and other types of war criminals. Later, he

was given the title of president of the national bank and minister of industry. His

appointment to these positions had a great effect in moving Cuba towards communism.

Guevara also served as an ambassador, establishing relations with other countries,

especially the Soviet Union and had a critical part in the Cuban Missile Crisis and the

Bay of Pigs invasion. Guevara would also attempt to start an uprising in Bolivia, which

would prove to be a mistake. He was captured by the Bolivian army and executed on

October 9, 1967 in La Higuera and died at the age of thirty nine.
