Art Methods Lesson Plan

Title: Stained Glass Window

Subject Area: Art and Math (geometry)

Grade: 1st grade

Duration: 45 min

Standards: Focus Standards (Math):

1.MD.K Reason with shapes and their attributes.

1.G.2 Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares,

trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-circles) or three-
dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular
cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and
compose new shapes from the composite shape. (Students do not
need to learn formal names such as right rectangular prism.)

Supporting Standards (Art):

VA.1.CR1.1.2 Use observation and investigation to make a work of

art.

VA.2.CR2.1.2 Demonstrate safe and proper procedures for

using materials, tools, and equipment while making art.

This activity is designed to provide students with a tangible way to

Rationale: explore geometric and composite shapes. By allowing students the
opportunity to physically arrange various shapes to create new
shapes, this activity will activate students' brains thus further
deepening their level of understanding of geometry.

Assessments: The teacher will observe students as they create composite

shapes for this project. Formative assessment will be made
based on the teacher's observation.
At the end of the activity, the class will discuss their
experience and the teacher can further assess the students'
level of understanding based on the discussion.

The final product created by each student can be assessed by
the teacher to determine whether or not the understanding of
composite shapes is apparent in each student's work.

Modifications/ If need be, a template can be provided so the students can glue
Adaptations: shapes to the designated outlined areas.
Rubber gloves should be available for students with strong
feelings about getting their hands dirty or sticky.

Materials: Printed and laminated images of famous stained glass

windows
Dry erase markers
Tissue paper (cut into a variety of small geometric shapes)
Wax paper (cut into 8"x10" pieces)
Colored paper
Scissors
Glue sticks

Objectives: Students will arrange various two-dimensional geometric

shapes to create new composite shapes.
Students will design and create a work of art using two-
dimensional geometric shapes.

Procedure: OPEN:
(10 min):
Brief review of geometric/composite shapes.
Hand out laminated images of famous stained glass windows
and have students work in groups to find geometric shapes in
the images. Students can use dry erase markers to outline the
shapes.
BODY:
(30 min):
Explain to students that they will be creating a "stained glass
window". Show students an example of a completed project
and point out the use of composite shapes throughout the
work.
Pass out materials for project. Each student should receive 2
pieces of wax paper, a glue stick, a variety of tissue paper
shapes, colored paper, and scissors.
Reemphasize to the students that their work should consist of
one or more composite shapes and that they should be piecing
some of the precut shapes together to create new shapes.
Students will now work on gluing the pre-cut tissue paper

shapes on the wax paper.
When students have finished their designs, they will put glue
on the blank piece of wax paper and glue it to the top on their
designs.
Now, the students will cut out a frame for their "window"
using the colored paper and scissors. They will then glue this
frame around the border of their "window".
CLOSE:
(5min):
When all "windows" are complete, students will walk around
the room to view each other's work.
When the students are seated, invite them to speak openly in a
whole class discussion about their experience with this
project.
