What is a Speech or Language Disorder
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) officially defines it as a communication disorder such as stuttering,
impaired articulation, a language impairment, or a voice impairment that affects or hinders a childs educational
performance.
Stuttering A communication disorder such as stuttering provides an example of a fluency disorder; other fluency
issues include unusual word repetition and hesitant speech.
Impaired articulation indicates impairments in which a child experiences challenges in pronouncing specific sounds.
A language impairment can entail difficulty comprehending words properly, expressing oneself and listening to
others.
A voice impairment involves difficulty voicing words; for instance, throat issues may cause an abnormally soft voice.
Stuttering
Many children go through a period of stuttering between 2-5 years old

Examples of this is trouble with correct verb tense, sentence structure, and word
order, lack of vocab knowledge, etc.
Way to help a Child with Language Impairment.
Early Intervention System
EI is a system of services designed to help toddlers
and infants with disabilities. The IDEA mandates it
and through early intervention, parents have their
young one evaluated free of charge. This is done to
help find and identify developmental delays or
disabilities. These including speech and language
disorders.
Voice Impairment
Defined as A deviation in pitch, intensity, quality, or other attribute which
interferes with communication; draws unfavorable attention; adversely affects
the speaker or the listener; or is inappropriate to the age, sex or culture of the
individual.
Examples are hoarse, raspy voice. A sharp or dull pain when one talks. Not a
voice Impairment if one is just sick or lost voice.
Causes for Speech and Language Disorders
According to the Parent Center Hub, the causes for speech and language disorders
are
- Children that have Social Communication Disorder (SCD) have a difficult time
using language in social situations
HOW TO HELP:
-When having conversations with the child, remind them to slow down and to listen
to you. Making sure that they are making eye contact to develop those skills to have
that polite conversation
Child Doesnt Understand Jokes or Sarcasm
- Children that have SCD may have trouble interpreting someones tone of voice
and be more literal-minded
HOW TO HELP:
-Something that can help is watching TV shows. Discussing the characters moods
can create a sense of their emotions which can help interpreting nonverbal cues.
Child Is Quiet Around Friends
- Expressive language issues is a condition that makes it hard to put thoughts into
words
- This can be the cause of some children becoming shy
