I know that it is my job to make sure that everything goes well for the tourists, and I feel I work hard
for the company. I cannot be blamed for last week. I met the group at the airport and took them to the
coach. The coach driver was a bit annoyed because the flight was late. But it wasn't far to the hotel and
everyone was looking forward to their dinner.. We hadn't used the Hotel Riviera before but our normal one
had a conference in it so it was fully booked. When I announced our arrival at the reception desk, they said
they were full. I had booked rooms for the group but the manager said they were canceled by. phone a few
days before. He insisted that he recognised my voice arid that I had made the phone call. We had a bit of an
argument but they obviously didn't have enough rooms. In the end, the manager phoned other hotels in the
town and found rooms for everyone but in four different hotels. By this time, the coach had gone so we had
to get taxis and some of the tourists started to get very angry with me. I still don't know who made that
phone call but it definitely wasn't me.

Probably the most important factor governing the severity of forest fires is weather. Hot, dry
weather lowers the moisture content of fuels. Once a fire has started, wind is extremely critical
because it influences the oxygen supply and the rate of spread. Forest type and forest conditions
are also important factors. For example, fire is more likely to occur in conifers than in hardwoods;
slash-covered or brushy areas are especially hazardous because the rate at which combustion
consumes fuel is proportional to fuel volume and surface area.
Some fires are caused by lightning; others are cused by people. Those caused by people may
be accidental or intentional (incendiary). The causes-of fire in the United states show large regional
differences. In the Rocky Mountains more than 70 percent of the fires are caused by lightning,
whereas incendiary fires amount to ow), about 1 percent. In contrast, more than 40 percent of the
fires in the south are incendiary, whereas lightning causes only 1 percent.

Many of the latest scientific accomplishments fall in the realm of "pure" science. This is research
for the sake of increasing- man's knowledge without concern about how the knowledge is going to
be used. In contrast with pure science is "applied" science. The production of synthetic diamonds
is an example of applied science. In applied science, the facts and principles of pure science are
used in the solution of a problem which has or will have immediate economic and social
importance.
Often in the past, applied science has gone far ahead of pure science. Its practical applications have
been used for man's good even before the basic facts and principles were understood. For example,
the telegraph, - telephone, and electric motor, which could not work without electrons, were
invented before man discovered the electron. People were vaccinated long before viruses were
investigated. Chemicals like sulfuric acid and soda were manufactured long before man began to
understand the nature of the atom. Today, however, if applied science is to grow it must depend
more and more on increased knowledge of pure science.

In the past, music was often rich with the cultural part of a civilization. It could provide through
songs and rhythm, an insight into a society. Traditional, folk and classical forms have today been
supplemented by pop, rock and jazz music. In many countries, all these forms have become a part of
everyday life.
Music is, perhaps, the most easily appreciated art form. You don't have to be a musician to know
what you like or don't like, although a musician's knowledge could perhaps distinguish more easily
between good and bad music. But what exactly is good music? What separates music from noise?
For a start, all sounds come from vibrations. Vibrations can be described as movements in the air,
and sounds come from objects which vibrate. So, for example, guitar strings, when touched, vibrate and
make a sound. The human ear cannot detect all sounds, however. Sounds must have certain loudness before
we can notice them. Many animals, however, have better hearing than we do. Dogs, for instance, can hear
much higher frequencies, and bats can hear up to three times better than humans. When listening to a piece
of music, yon may have noticed a dog or cat being disturbed at a particular point that you weren't. This is
because the animal is hearing a frequency that you can't.
But not all sounds are the same. Some sounds, such as music, are pleasant to hear. Other sounds are
not, and these we call noise. The difference between the two is a difficult question to answer.
21. According to the passage, in the past people could
A. enjoy listening to music only when they were rich.
B. know more songs than they do now.
C. get some social knowledge listening to music.
D. enjoy better songs than they do now.

D. music is a too complicated art form.
23. All sounds conze from
A. movements of the body.
B. guitar strings.

Today's cars are smaller, safer, cleaner, and more economical than their predecessors, but the
car of the future will be far more pollution-free than those on the road today. Several new types of
automobile engines have already been developed that run on alternative sources of power, such as
electricity, compressed natural gas, methanol, steam, hydrogen, and propane. Electricity, however,
is the only zero-emission option presently available.
Although electric vehicles will not be truly practical until a powerful, compact battery or other
epenable source of current is available, transportation experts foresee a new assortment of electric
vehicles entering everyday life: Shorter-range commuter electric cars, three-wheeled neighborhood
cars, electric delivery vans, bikes, and trolleys.
As automakers work to develop practical electrical vehicles, urban planners and utility
engineers are focusing on infrastructure systems to support and make the best use of the new cars.
Public charging facilities will need to be as common as today's gas stations. Public parking spots
on the street or in commercial lots will need to be equipped with devices that allow drivers to
charge their batteries while they shop, dine, or attend a concert. To encourage the use of electric
vehicles, the most convenient parking in transportation centers might be reserved for electric cars.
Planners foresee electric shuttle buses trains, buses and neighbor-hood vehicles all meeting at
transit centers that would have facilities for charging and renting. Commuters will be able to rent a
variety of electric cars to suit their needs: Light trucks, one-person three-sheelers, small cars, or
electric/gasoline hybrid cars for longer trips, which will n6oubt take place on automated
freeways capable of handling five times the number of vehicles that can be carried by a freeway
today.

Noah Webster's goal in life was to promote the adoption of an American language. He wanted to
free Americans from British English as they had freed themselves from the British crown. To this
end he published a series of three textbooks: a speller in 1783, a grammar in 1784, and a reader in
1785.
Webster objected to the way certain words had been borrowed from other languages but had not
been respelled. The results, he claimed, was a confusing mixture of letters, many of which were not
pronounced the way they looked, and others of which were not pronounced at all.
Webster urged Americans to simplify their spelling. For example, he argued that "head" should be
spelled/ hed/ and "bread!' should be spelled /bred/. Most of Webster's suggestions did not catch on,
but his textbooks sold millions of copies.

Uri Geller was born in 1946. When he was only three years old, he was aware that he had an
amazing ability. In 1969 he gave his first public performance in a school. He gently rubbed a spoon
with his fingers, and it began to bend. Three years later he drove a car blindfolded through the
crowded streets of Munich.
In one experiment in the United States, scientists asked Geller to draw objects which were like
those in an envelope. The envelope was closed and no one could see inside it. Geller drew several
round shapes but he could not say what they were. However, the result of the experiment was
amazing. After opening the envelope, he saw a picture of a bunch of grapes. There was exactly the
same number of grapes in the picture as in his drawing.
Later Uri Geller appeared on television in Britain in front of a small studio audience of scientists.
He bent spoons and broke metal objects simply by touching them gently with his fingers. He also
drew pictures of hidden objects. After the programme, however, there were hundreds of telephone
calls. People reported that spoons in their homes bent during the programme. Metal objects broke,
and watches which had stopped many years ago suddenly started to go again.

Petroleum products, such as gasoline, kerosene, home heating oil, residual fuel oil, and lubrication
oils, come from one source-crude oil found below the earth's surface, as well as under large bodies
of water, from a few hundred feet below the surface to as deep as 25,000 feet into the earth's
interior. Sometimes crude oil is, secured by drilling a hole' through the- earth, but more dry holes are
drilled than those producing oil. Pressure at the source or pumping forces crude oil to the surface.
Crude oil wells flow at varying rates, from ten to thousands of barrels per hour. Petroleum products
are always measured in 42-gallon barrels.
Petroleum products vary greatly in physical appearance: thin, thick, transparent or opaque, but
regardless, their chemical composition is made . up_ of only two elements: carbon and hydrogen,
which form compounds called hydrocarbons. Other chemical elements found in union with the
hydrocarbons arefew and ,are classified as impurities. Trace elements are also found, but these are
of such minute quantities that they are disregarded. The combination of carbon and hydrogen
forms many thousands of compounds which are possible because of the various positions and
joining of these two atoms in the hydrocarbon molecule.
The Various petroleum products are refined from' the crude oil by heating and condensing the
vapors. These products are the so-called light 'oils, .such as gasoline, kerosene, and distillate oil.
The residue remaining after the light oils are distilled is known as heavy or residual fuel oil and i.s
used mostlyi for, burning under boilers. Additional complicated refining processes rearrange the
chemical structure of the hydrocarbons to produce other products, some of which .are used to
upgrade and increase the octane rating of various types of gasoline.

England's highest main-line railway station hangs on to life by a thread: deserted and unmanned
since it was officially closed in 1970. Dent, situated high in the-hills of Yorkshire, wakes up on six
summer weekends each year, when a special charter train unloads walkers, sightseers and people
who simply want to catch a train from the highest station to its platforms.
But even this limited existence may soon be brought to an end. Dent station is situated on the Settel
to Carlisle railway line, said to the most 'scenic in the country. But no amount of scenic beauty can
save the line from the British Rail's cash problems.
This year, for the sake of economy, the express trains which used to pass through Dent station have
been put to another route.
It is now an open secret that British Rail sees no future for this railway line. Most of its trains
disappeared some time ago. Bridge, built on a grand scale a century ago, is falling down. It is not
alone. Half a dozen railway routes in the North of England are facing a similar threat. The problem
is a worn out system and an almost total lack of cash to repair it. Bridges and tunnels are showing
their ages, the wooden supports for the trackS are rotting and engines and coaches are getting old.
On major lines between large cities, the problem is not too bad. These lines still make a profit a.nd
cash can be found to maintain them. But on the country branch line, the story is different. As track
wears out, it is not replaced. Instead speed limits are introduced, -making the journey longer than .
necessary and discouraging customers.. .
If a bridge is dangerous, there is often only one thing for British Rail to do: go out and find money
from another source. This is exactly what it did a few months ago when a bridge at Bridling station
was threatening to fall down. Repairs were estimated at .200, 000 pounds just for one bridge and
B4tish,Rait was delighted, and rather surprised when two local councils offered half that amount
- between them.
