DRAGONFLY 44 A ENTIRE
GALAXY OF DARK MATTER
For thousands of years we have looked up to the night sky and
thought that the luminous matter is what makes up the universe
but now it has been found that rather it is the hidden sector that
holds the true secrets of universe There is mysterious Dark
Matter that binds stars and in larger the galaxies together and
then there is Dark energy which actually creates space and is
responsible for the expansion of the universe. Together dark
energy and dark matter makes up the 96% of the universe and
observable or luminous matter just making up the rest
4%.Uncovering their secrets are very important to determine the
true fate of the universe will it crash and burn? Or end up freezing
to death? We can answer these questions and even end up
making the one universal equation to try to explain every single
phenomenon in the universe but only if we somehow take hold
over these obscure quantities.

Dark matter is not like anything we have ever witnessed, it does
not interact with luminous matter nor even with the
electromagnetic radiations which also make it invisible .it is an
unidentified type of matter distinct from dark energy which makes
up the 27% of the universe.it is not till late 1930s that scientists
actually realized that universe was bigger than just the milky way.

With that realization Astronomers started observing and analyzing
new galaxies and their movements.
The presence of Dark matter was initially realized when a
Caltech professor Fritz Zwicky looked up to the neighboring coma
cluster of galaxies and observed something very strange. He
measured the motion of the galaxies in the cluster and calculated
the corresponding mass that should be present then he compared
it to the visible mass and the two just simply didnt add up.
Galaxies were moving too fast for the amount of visible mass they
contained. By his calculations there should have been around 160
times more illuminated mass to account for the random speeds of
the galaxies. He proposed that there is some matter missing to
maintain the stability of the galaxies at such high speeds and
named it the Missing matter. At first his idea was rejected by
majority of scientists as it could not have been detected but 50
years down the lane a scientist named Vera Rubin who was
working on the movement of the galaxies observed that as we
traverse along the galaxies its velocity remains unaffected which
according to theory of general relativity or even Newtonian
physics could not happen.so she re iterated the idea of missing
matter or dark matter surrounding the galaxies accounting for
their actual rotating speed. Although Dark matter does not
interact with any particle but it exposed itself by showing the
gravitational effects of bending light and its better known as
Gravitational lensing thus the scientists were able to pin point
dark matter by seeing the distorted light images. It was observed
the it is concentrated at the hallows of the galaxies
After majority of scientists started believing in this theory the next
hot debate was what actually Dark matter consisted of if not the
normal particles? There were many candidates including BLACK
HOLES, FAILED STARS ,MACHOS but none of them could really
befitted as Dark matter.
So finally it was proposed dark matter could be made up of
weakly interacting massive particles which could account for its
weird properties.

Now recently a new galaxy Dragon fly 44 has been discovered by
scientists which is almost entirely made up of dark matter and it
seems a very interesting prospect
