Chapter 7 Project - Hanna, Erin, and Mitch

My partners and I have decided to run a survey on how many shoes the average teenager
owns. We made sure to word the question right to get the most accurate responses. We told the
people that their answer should be about every shoe they own that fits them. It doesn't matter
what the type of shoe is. We sent an online survey to every other senior and every other junior in
Fowler High School. We sent the survey to 50 people but only received 34 responses. So our data
is based on the answers of 34 people.
After collecting all of the data, we typed it all into L1 on a graphing calculator. Then we
ran 1-variable statistics to find all of the information needed. We found that the mean of our data
is 11.41 and the standard deviation is 8.6. Then we found the five number summary of our data.
The lower quartile is 6, the min x is 0, the median is 9.5, the upper quartile is 13, and the
maximum x is 40. After plugging all of the data into the calculator, we graphed the data. The
graph was not a normal distribution but we did notice that there was a skew right. Our graph also
made it clear that our data has a few outliers. We found the outliers to be 23, 25, 25, 32, and 40.
We found the outliers by taking 1.5 and multiplying it by the interquartile range.
My group and I answered our own survey question on how many pairs of shoes we each
have. Erin has 10, Mitch has 3, and Hanna has 8. After we answered the question we found the z
scores and the probability that a person would answer greater than us. We first used the equation
z=x-u/o for each of our numbers and we took our numbers and plugged them in. The x represents
the original measurement. Then the u is the mean. Finally the o is the standard deviation. The
numbers that we got were -0.16 for Erin, -0.97 for Mitch and -0.39 for Hanna. Once we found
our z scores we went to the the table and found the probability. To use the table you take your z
score and and go down to find the first number after the decimal and then you look at the top and
go to the second number and see what number you fall on and that is your probability. After we
found those numbers we subtracted them from one because we wanted the probability that
someone would answer greater than us. The z table only shows less than, so that is why we had
to subtract one from the z score. Mitchs probability was 0.834, Erins was 0.56, and Hanna's was
0.56. After we found the probability, we took Erin and Hanna's probability and subtracted them.
So we ended up subtracting .4364 from .3483 and we got 0.0881
The next thing we did was use z scores and the central limit theorem to determine the
probability that a sample of 30 people will have an average greater than the amount of shoes of
my partners and I. For Hanna we found the probability to be .9884. We found this by using the x
distribution equation and subtracting that answer by one. We did the same thing for Erin and got
a final probability of .8186. For Mitch, the probability was 0% because he only has 3 pairs of
shoes which is a low amount compared to rest of the data we have collected.
