Lesson Based on Learning Theories

Grade: 2nd

Subject: Math

Unit: Building fluency with addition and subtraction

Standard: Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems

involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with

unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown

number to represent the problem.

Constructivism

Assignment- The teacher will explain how to do a two-step word problem to

the children. The students will already have knowledge of one-step word

problems, so the teacher should use knowledge to assist her in teacher the

new material.
Teacher Role- Teacher will use what the students already know about word

problems to help them explain the new concept to the students.


Student Role- Students will call on previously learned knowledge to aid them

in understanding the new material.

Multiple Intelligences (Linguistic)

Assignment- The teacher will verbally and physically explain how to solve

two-step word problems to the students.


Teacher Role- Teacher will talk through the process of solving a two-step word

problem, while also asking the students questions to ensure that they are

understanding the lesson


Student Role- Students will verbally ask and answer questions as the lesson

progresses to clear up any confusion.

Classical Conditioning

Assignment- After the verbal explanation, teacher will give out a worksheet to

the students that has multiple two-step word problems for them to work on.
Teacher Role- Teacher is supplying the word problems to the students so that

they become accustomed to working on the harder topic.


Student Role- Students will work out the equations causing them to become

comfortable with the two-step word problems due to answering them so

many times.

Social Learning Theory

Assignment- While students are working in groups on the worksheet, the

teacher should walk around to assist the students as needed. The worksheet

should be challenging to the students so that they will learn the material

through hard work.


Teacher Role- The teacher will put the students into groups so that they can

help each other, and teacher should walk around to the groups to make sure

the students are on the right track.


Student Role- Students will be communicating with peers to work through

challenging two-step word problems. Individually the students will gain

further knowledge of the topic through help from their peers and the teacher.
