What is Culture?

Curriculum Outcome:
2.1 Examine and develop a general concept of culture

- I can understand and create an understanding of what culture is and the
different things that contribute to the creation of culture.
- I can apply my understanding of culture to different areas and to myself

Class Objectives:
Purpose: To introduce the concept of culture and begin to apply it to different
things
Importance: Students will need to have an understanding of the concept of culture
to be able to
Key Questions: What is culture? What is Canadian Culture? What is Atlantic
Canadian Culture? What is identity? How does culture contribute to my identity?

Time: 20-25 minutes

- Chart paper with questions - Video

- Hook: What is culture video
Time: 3 minutes
1. Explain to students that we will be starting a unit in social studies on culture.
2. Play video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8pbmbfeoHs for students to
get students thinking about what they think culture might mean

- Content Learning and Critical Thinking: Chart paper brainstorm
- Time: 20 minutes
- Behaviour Expectations: Students will raise their hands to contribute to the
class discussion. I will circulate while students are working to assist them if
they need help. Students will brainstorm in their groups to answer the
questions on the chart paper. Students will stay with their groups and move
when the timer goes off.
1. Divide students into 5 groups. There will be chart paper on the lab
benches and each group will start at one of the tables. Students will have
4 minutes at each station to write/draw their responses.
2. Set the timer for 4 minutes and circulate as students work filling in their
answers.

- Conclusion: Wrap-up
Time: 2 minute
1. Have students return to their seats. We will be using their responses on the
sheets to come up with definitions of for culture in class on Wednesday.

- Formative: Students will be completing an exercise to see what their prior
knowledge about the concept of culture and their ability to apply it to
different areas.
