Secret Arrangement

Haley walked at an average student pace with her hands full of papers that secretly had

no meaning. It was five minutes after the beginning of lunch and people were settling in their

everyday spots. Well that or waiting impatiently in line at the cafeteria to get a slice of unfrozen

pizza. Haley began to walk out into the middle of the quad with lighting that only shined grey

because of the immense clouds. She then pretended to trip as if an invisible boulder had hit her

right foot. Papers began to fall vertically at the speed of feathers. Horizontally, the papers

swayed left to right like a swing set. The sheets laid out in front of her with a maximum distance

of six feet. Each paper had either unorganized math work or scattered notes that started with

bullet points the size of peas.

It took less than 30 brief seconds for Haley to pick up the fifteen papers, but no one had

helped. Not a single student walked over to help or simply ask if she needed assistance. Each

individual that saw the accident decided it was better to continue chattering with their friends.

After Haley finished gathering the papers she started walking around the quad and over to me.

I sat still for a moment thinking of where I could have Haley trip next.
The halls were more crowded with students and teachers standing, sitting, and walking

about. Haley began to walk at a pace fast enough to break her earrings from being stationary but

slow enough to not look like she was in a hurry. Haley came up between B and C wing ready to

pretend to trip and drop her papers once again. A group of four were walking behind her in the

same direction that looked to be sophomores. There were students walking in the opposite

direction on Haleys left hand side as well. The three students on her left were most likely

juniors because there faces were not familiar and yet they looked decently old.

As Haley began to trip (this time with her left foot) both groups took notice. The papers

scattered within a 5 foot radius from her and the group walking in the opposite direction

continued to do so as if they couldnt turn their feet. As for the group behind her, they stopped

and asked Haley if she was okay. Haley preceded to respond telling them she was fine. The

woman farthest on the left began to kneel down on the cold boring pavement and gather some of

Haleys papers with care. The rest followed soon after and the task was complete within ten

seconds.

Haley thanked all of them as they handed the papers over to her. They all walked away

with smiles on their faces and the day seemed to instantly brighten for Haley. Emotionally, the

sky turned from grey to a majestic yellow. Her walk back to me was simply more graceful and

cheerful. A mood like that could spread around the school faster than a wild fire. I finished

jotting down any last details I had observed and thanked Haley for helping me in my

observation.
