Country: Italy

Committee #2
Delegate: Luz Victoria Simon Jasso
School: High Tech High Chula Vista
Topic: Syrian Refugee Crisis

Italy believes the Syrian refugee crisis must be addressed, not for the best interest of
the countries involved, but for the betterment of Syria and for the well being of
generations to come. In 2016 the UN declared 13.5 million Syrians in need of
humanitarian assistance, of those 6 million are internally displaced due to the ongoing
civil war.

Italy has been known to handle waves of refugees, 88% of the 171,000 (2016) from
Africas North Coast, arriving and then being put through our immigration system. For
this reason we would like the address and solution of the refugee crisis in Syria to also
be applicable to those outside of that region. Our country has not established solutions
to face the masses of people seeking refuge other than to put them through our system
of immigration. Our system has non-citizens placed in reception centers where asylum
applications are filed, 20% granted in 2015. Despite our system being able to give
positive results, it will not suffice for the amounts of people that are expected to come to
Italy in the future.

Italy has been a member of the UN since 1955 and for years has been the fifth top
contributor of $57,191,167 to the regular budget. Italy is also proud to say that our
contributions are geared toward troops to peacekeeping missions in Balkans, the Middle
East, and Africa. Italy will continue to be a strong financial supporter of the UN in hopes
that what we donate will show results in our future, not only to support countries that are
taking refugees but most importantly find a solution in the countries that refugees are
fleeing from.
Based on Italys efforts on processing and accepting masses of refugees from different
parts of the world (mainly Africa) we believe it is in the best interest of the UN to require
that all nations receive a set number of refugees from Syria based on their economic
means and ability to provide the refugees with some sort of governmental resettlement
program. Doing so will support refugees who need our immediate assistance and
compassion. Italy believes that if this solution shows positive results it can be applied to
other refugee crises.
