Terps win The Rivalry

COLLEGE PARK, Md.The Maryland Terrapins faced off against the John
Hopkins Blue Jays Saturday in an impressive win.

The two Maryland-based schools met in what is known as The


Rivalry. The two schools have played each other in lacrosse every
year since 1895, making it the oldest college lacrosse rivalry in the
nation.

The No. 5 Terrapins won 12-5 over the No. 8 Blue Jays. Johns Hopkins
holds the all-time series lead at a record of 71-43-1.

Maryland Stadium was filled with


both Maryland and Johns Hopkins
fans, as the game got underway at
8 p.m. Maryland Lacrosse took to
Twitter to announce an attendance
total of 14,353, the largest crowd
for a lacrosse game since 1989.

a big crowd, it felt almost like a

I think our crowd tonight, thats
as good as it gets. We got a lot of energy from them, Maryland Head
Coach John Tillman said in a postgame press conference.

With 3 goals and 4 assists, the night was extra special for senior Matt
Rambo, who became Marylands all-time leader in points. This is an
impressive feat for the All-American who will go down as one of the
best all-time Maryland lacrosse players.

The game had big implications regarding Big Ten standings, with the
winner receiving the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten tournament next week in
Columbus, Ohio, as well as the regular season Big Ten title.

This is the Terrapins third straight win against the Blue Jays, their
longest winning streak against Johns Hopkins since the 1960s.

The rivalry has progressed through the years do to the schools


proximity, the state of Maryland being well known for their strong
lacrosse programs, and the fact that the two programs are lacrosse
powerhouses, with a combined 11 championships since the first NCAA
Mens Lacrosse Championship tournament in 1971.

As someone who has lived in


Maryland all my life, I look forward
to this game every year, said

am a Hopkins graduate myself, but
now my son goes to Maryland, so
the games have gotten more
interesting.

The Terrapins play the Penn State
Nittany Lions this Thursday in the opening round of the Big Ten
Tournament, while Johns Hopkins will play the tournament hosts, the
Ohio State Buckeyes.
