iv. Then I downloaded the full text of the dissertation, I found the first bit
from the introduction and the article in the bibliography.
4. Find the hurd-gurdy with orchestra! First off, they kick you out of the library when the
power goes out, but if you were a ninja and could sneak around, you would use the Music
Subject Headings book, look under concertos, then find hurdy-gurdy. They all point you
to M1039.4.H87

6. Topic: My topic has adjusted to something a bit less abstract. I want to focus on the
philosophy, or rationale, for having music in other curriculums around the world and then
what methods do they use or employ to realize those methods.

b. Remer, J. (1996). Beyond enrichment: Building effective arts partnerships with
schools and your community. New York: American Council for the Arts.
i. I picked this article because it shows how people are trying to involve the
arts outside of the curriculum day, but that they are trying to bring the Arts
into childrens lives.
c. To Find these resources I went and got the Colwell and Richardson book and then
scanned through the Contents Page until a section struck me. I turned to that
section and then I reviewed the section and went through the different parts and
picked a headline that was interesting to me. I read the section, found a cited
piece of information I liked, went to the bibliography and found the article. Then
to read a bit more about the article I did a Database search with RILM and ERIC
and read the abstract of each article.
7. Advanced search for: kw(hurdy-gurdy) as a phrase and limited it to books.

c. To find these resources I did a library search and limited the results to books.
8. Songs by Dan Quinn and Gussie Davis
a. Song 1 Ive been hoodooed.1896. Found in the library of congress
b. Song 2 Down in Poverty Row 1896-1901. Found at the Syracuse University
Library.
9. The Oldest recording that I can find is from 1896. It is a wax cylinder. It can be found
in the Syracuse University library.
a. To find this item I did a worldcat search for Im old but Im wwfully tough.
Then I narrowed my searches down with a Limit and clicked on the oldest year. I
then selected the assignment where I could specify the year.
10. I found a fictional dissertation with the title Underwater Basketweaving : a reimbursable
vocational trade? The best part is the author is Ima Pfoul. It was quite easy to find with
a title search Underwater basketweaving

11. The Authors say that the study does not meet the surgeon generals requirements for
physical education. They published their Article in Physical Educator. To find this article

I did a search in ERIC with Strand and Sommer as authors and physical education as
a keyword anywhere.
12. The piece is his Second Piano Forte Sonata. The Article is titled Insurance Man, and it
is from Time. To find the article did search with the Readers Guide Retrospective. I saw
three results with the search terms Ives and insurance, an article from 1939, was there and
I selected it. I was unable to get the article through readers guide digest. The GET IT
button didnt work. I saw that it was in Time Magazine, Volume 33, From January 30th. I
clicked on the TIME magazine hyper link in Readers Guide Retrospective, it took me to a
new location and showed me all the volumes of online issues, I found the January 30th
issue from 1939 and there was the article.
13. The uniform title is Rautavaara, Einojuhani, 1928- Rakkaus ei koskaan hvi. I found it
by first doing a search in the IC basic search for Rautavaara with the sort by title
function. Then I found the persons full name and date. I copied that information, then
went back into the basic search (still with the sort by title), copied the name and date and
then added in charity never faileth. I was sent to a new search and it told me to see the
correct uniform title.
14. The article is titled, Certain Characteristics of Baton Twirlers and it is from the Journal
of Research in Music Education. I found it by doing a search on JSTOR. I did an author
search with C F Lehman and a music education keyword search.
15. The Title of the Chapter is, Sounds of seduction: Sex and alcohol in country music
lyrics. Yes the IC library does have the book, but we are required to use OPAC to find
the book, meaning the get-it function did not work, but an IC library function did. To find
the article I did a search of Jacqueline Boles as author and popular music in a keyword.
To find the article I did a search with ERIC and RILM, and I found it in RILM.
16. Lori Fulton presented a paper entitled, Protest Literature of the Dead Bald White Guys
Meets Protest Music of All Colors: Using Music To Connect Students to American
Revolutionary Literature. The two songs she used are the Beatles Revolution and James
Brown's Living in America. I found these articles by doing a search with ERIC. I had
Lori Fulton as an author and American Revolution as a subject.
17. The title of the article is Va-Va-Voom Goes the Soprano. It premiered in London and
Eva-Maria Westbroek played the main character. To find this article I first went to
LexisNexus and couldnt find anything with even the most basic search of anna nicole.
I then went to The New York Times Present articles search tab. I did a very specific
search for Mark-Anthony Turnage AND Anna Nicole and also limited the date to 2011. I
came up with three articles, only one of them was a real review.
18. Stravinsky played his own arrangement of the Star Spangled Banner at Boston Symphony
Hall. Massachusetts Law does not allow anyone to make adjustments to part or all of the
national anthem. He could have been charged 100USD but he was not. I found the
article by doing a search in the New York Times Early articles. I used a keyword search
for Stravinsky Boston Police and I limited the years to 1943 and 1945 (just to be safe) I
came up with two articles, the other article is RADIO TODAY so not important.

19. I found this article doing a search with Teacher Reference Center. KW:(The Simpsons),
AU:(Ginger Eikmeier) and a date limit to 2008. Only one article showed up, so I clicked
on it and then had to go through JSTOR to find it. I had to find figure one to find the first
answer, and for the second answer I thought it might be a reference within a reference so
I found in the paper where Eikmeier cits Kueker, but no luck. Then I went back and read
the citation for Kueker and saw ERIC. So from there I did a quick Erick Search for Jean
Kueker and her article is the second one that pops up. To open the Kueker article you can
access it straight from ERIC with the provided URL.
a. The Telltale Head and Lisas Rival are both from Poes A Telltale Heart
b. The title of Jean Kuekers article is Prereading Activities: A Key to
Comprehension
c. You can find the full text within ERIC, you just have to click on the link button,
so no need to ILL. The article title is Johnny cant read; Does the fault like with
the book, the teacher, or Johny.
20. The ailments discussed in the article that lead to the demise of a composer are: plague,
syphilis, cholera, cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis, and pneumonia. I found this article by
doing a search in first PSYCHINFO because I thought it might be in the psychology
realm, but didnt find anything. I then did a search in RILM with AU:(Rietschel) and
KW:(composer infectious disease). One article came up and in the abstract you can find
seven ailments, but I only listed six as the instructions said.

Scavenger Hunt # 3

1. The manuscript is found in the Elgar Birthplace Museum. It was thought to have been
completed November 20th, 1904. I looked at my source list and found that I could use
composers thematic catalogue, I searched in the IC library catalogue to find the thematic
works for Elgar. I looked up the march, found the location, and looked up the March.
Referencing the abbreviation section at the beginning, and made sure I had the correct
date.
2. The piece below is Concerto #1 by Bach and the instrumentation is for 2 Pfts (pianoforte)
and Orchestra. I looked in the abbreviation section to confirm this idea To find the piece
below I used the Barlow book. I took the melody, wrote down the pitch names and
looked in the back and it guided me to the correct melody.
3. The piece was composed around 1736. In the old works set [BG] it can be found in xxi
Volume 2, Page 3. In the new works set [BNA] it can be found in VII volume 5, page 3.
To find this resource I took the BWV number from Balow and consulted New Grove to
find the location in the new and old works sets. There was some discrepancy over
instrumentation, New grove says it is for harpsichord. I looked in the new and old works
sets to make sure the piece is the same, and it is.B oth of them have the solo labeled as
Cembalo, and consulting the English-German music dictionary a Cembalo is a
harpsichord.

4. The real name of Guitarist Daddy Rabbit is Coleman Pettis Jr. Another one of his names
is Alabama Pettis. I found this by using the music AKA book. I looked up Daddy Rabit
and was directed to Coleman Pettis Jr. I also cross referenced him with his other names
and they all relate back to Coleman Pettis Jr. That is a functional reference guide.
5. The instrumentation is: 2 Clarinets, 2 Basoons, 1 double bassoon, 2 horns, 2 trombones.
The catalogue number is 79 and the other title is Eine Kleine Trauermusik. It was
composed September 19th, 1813, and published 1889. I found this information by looking
in Grove under the chamber music works. I did have to cross-reference the abbreviations
to make sure I had the instrumentation correct.
6. The full title of the anthology is, The Generous free mason: or, the consant lady. With
the humours of squire noodle, and his man doodle. A tragi-comi-farcical ballad opera in
three acts. With the musick prefixd to each song. By the author of the Lovers opera.
The five composers in the work are H. Carey, Charke, Gouge, Leveridge, J Sheeles. To
find this I looked in RISM B under the publishers. I found the entry dated 1731 by
Publisher J. Sheilds.
7. I used the library catalogue to figure out exactly where the Samtlicher Werke is in the
library, I found the correct volume and page to find the piece Bona Nox! Bist a rechta
Ox K561. I then went to Grove, and under Mozart used K. 561. Grove tells me that it is
in Series VII Volume 2 Page 37. I then wanted to make sure I actually knew how to find
the work in the book. It took a bit of digging to realize that the physical book is in two
sections.
8. The popular song is Pie in the Face Polka by Henri Mancini in 1965. I looked in Denys
Parons Director of Tunes and Musical Themes. It took me a moment to realize that there
was a popular song section. Once I found that section it was easy to find the written
rhythm.
9. The title of the song is The Irish Lad and the Cloysterd Nun. Brown University library
has the song. To find this I looked in RISM A volume 14 under William Shields. I had to
use the reference at the front of the book to figure out it was at Brown.
10. U.C. Berkley Jean Gray Hangrove Music Library owns the manuscript. To find it I
used RISM AII online and did a search for the song name. Three songs came up, two of
them are in G.B. I then clicked on the library icon and found the correct tab.

Scavenger Hunt # 4

1. The composer is Arthur Faria and consume designer is David Toser. I found it by looking
in Volume 2 of Blooms American Song: the complete musical theatre companion, 2nd ed.

2. The title of the piece is Wine is the cordial that conquers despair. The manuscript is in
the Hammersmith and Fulham Archives and Local History Centre in London. I found this

by doing a search of the online RISM database with james hook conquers despair and it
was the only result. I picked RISM AII because it is only for existing manuscripts.

3. Ravels Bolero is described as the most insolent monstrosity every perpetrated in the
history of music. And the author described Ravel must have been frightened by a bear at
the age of nine. I like bears, I have many great bear stories while going through the
woods, so I can relate to being frightened by bears. To find this I looked in the Lexicon of
Musical Invective and looked up the insult insolent monstrosity in the index and found
the correct article.

4. The title of the film is Saturday Night Bath in Apple Valley. I found it by looking in Film
Composers in America. I looked in the Table of contents and found that the composers
are in alphabetical order so I looked under the letter W and found it! I feel so successful!

5. His name is James Wes(t)ley Miley and the band with Mamie Smith is Jazz Hounds. I
found this information by looking first in the Music AKAs book and found the real name.
Then I did a search in the Encyclopedia of Popular Music for Mamie Smith and found out
she was a jazz musician, but I didnt find the name of her band. I next went to Grove
Dictionary of Jazz and found the information under Mamie Smith.

6. My very low friend, because he is a bass, will sing the role of Cherevik in The Fair at
Sorochintz. I found this by looking in the Opera to Roles section of Boudreys Guide to
operatic duets. The piece is Dudu, rududu, rududu

7. The edition is in Worchester, MA at the American Antiquarian Society Library. I found it


by looking in RISM AI Supplement, vol. 12, and found the piece. I then needed to cross
reference the location code WOa, with the standard RISM book to find the abbreviation.

8. Kroonprivilenien means royalty or royalties. I found this answer by looing in the Grigg
Music Translation Dictionary. I looked up Kroonprivilenien in the back of the book and
found it was 979DUT, then I looked where the 979s were and found the English
translation to be Royalty.

9. It is not in his complete works set because the piece was lost and it is only known from
his letters. The probable premiere was February of 1620 in Mantua. TO find the answer I
did a Grove online search for Monteverdi under his dramatic works list.

10. It means Knaubenchor or a boys choir. I found this answer by looking in the Hixon
music abbreviations reverse dictionary for KbCh.

11. I would love to go to Switzerland to study 20th century music, and when I passed through
Bern I would go to the Paul Sacher Stiftung, Bibliothek. I found this by looking in RISM
C, vol. II, Switzerland, Bern, and then read the entries to see which focused on 20th
century music.

12. Haydn composed 11 pieces for flute clock. Only one of the pieces is in G. To find this
info I used the Grove Dictionary and turned to Haydn (I was already turned to it because
I did question 13 first) and referencing the column that tells me key, only the 11th piece is
in G major.

13. The Hob. Is XIX:14 and the manuscript is listed under the list of original works but MS
copy was done by Johann Elssler. I looked Haydn up in The Grove Books, found the flute
clock section, and then found the complete workbook. From there I used the theme in the
index (thanks for the tip) to find the piece. I cross-referenced the piece back to Grove
using the Hob. number and then found out the piece was by Elssler.

14. On April 10th, 1970 Jim Morrison from the Doors asks if the audience would like to see
his private parts. The concert was ended sooner. In other news, the Beatles broke up. I
found this by looking in the chronology of American Popular Music under the date April
19th 1970.

15. In the scene a group of animals are singing while sitting around a music book. There is a
boy accompanying them with a shawm. There is a taller man watching over who is
standing behind a column. The painting is 48.8x48.8cm. I found the article by looking at
ridim.org and doing a search for the painter, I opened up the link and found all the
information!

16. The British Museum in London owns has the autographed score. I found it by looking
for Holsts Thematic Catalogue in the IC library, found the thematic catalogue, and then I
did a search by piece in index 1. I then referenced the abbreviations at the beginning of
the book and found that the British Museum is located in London.

17. The title is Teaching Graduate Students through Experiential Learning Not Stress. The
title for the article by Kjerulff and Wiggins is Graduate student styles for coping with
stressful situations. To find this article I did a search with AU: Kimvy Calpito in RILM,
ERIC, and PsychINFO, figuring one of those would yield a result. ERIC had only one
result and it was this article. TO get the article I had to click on the link on the bottom of
the page to view full text, then download the full text. Then I looked in the bibliography
to find Kjerulff and Wiggins article.

18. My wonderful 6th grader would want to go to International Music Camp, her contact
would be info@internationalmusiccamp.com. TO find this article I used the Musical

America Book, and then looked for summer music camps in North Dakota. There were
two, but this is the only one for younger students.

19. To make this Schubert-Goulash you need 200g of bacon fat. The recipe was published in
1991 in this article, but July of 1927 was the original publication date. I found this article
by doing a search on RILM because I was looking for a music article. I found we did not
have the article, I would have to ILL it, but looking in the abstract I was able to find the
information I needed.

20. The unusual music event is Anna Lockwood an eccentric composer from New Zealand
had a bit too much fun and sent her upright piano into Little Matthew Lake on Toad Hall
Ranch. She initially sent it down to a depth of three feet and she let it sink down to visit
(Davey Jones Locker) or the muddy bottom. Her husband, Harvey Matusow, was
blowing a cadenza on the clarinet while brandishing a bottle of gin. TO find this source I
looked in the Kuhn, and it is by date so I found December 27th 1972 and the entry for
Amarillo.
