Meaning Of Living With End Stage Renal Disease and Hemodialysis Of Muslims In

Pekanbaru,Indonesia: A Qualitative Study

Abstract

Findings of the study revealed 3 categories (1) restricted life,(2) life is struggle,(3)
reminder to god.

Introduction

Approximately 70.000 patients diagnosed with ESRD every year and arround
5% of them undergoing hemodyalisis treatment in indonesia(Endang,2005). ESRD
affects the daily activities of patients and families and influence their health status,
lifestyle and roles.

Methods

This research was an ethnographic study.the inclusion criteria included patient


with ESRD, having known the diagnosis,having been undergoing hemodialysis at
least for 6 months, muslim and having never changed treatment to peritoneal
analysis or renal transplantation.4 females and 8 males muslims on hemodyalisis
were recruited using purposive sampling and all informants were recruited in
pekanbaru,indonesia

Results

Three categories emerged which reflected the meaning of living with ESRD
undergoing hemodyalisis:

1. Restricted life
a. Relying on the machine
Their life was so close and tied to the machine.the machine was important
for their life.it replaced renal function to remove toxins and fluid excessive
in the body.
b. Limited energy
Was perceived by all informants.the disease affected the renal function
and consequently led to insufficiency of energy,possibly due to poor
nutrients and oxygen intake.having less energy caused restricted activities
and life.
c. Limited traveling
Undergoing hemodyalisis twice a week or more limited their time to travel.
They didnt feel because of the tight schedule of the treatment.
2. Life is struggle
a. Struggling with toxin and water accumulation
The informants were struggling with accumulation of the toxin and water in
their bodies.
b. Struggling with income earning
They were struggling with maintaining the job to bring in income to the
family.
3. Reminder to God
a. Getting Closer to god
The illness was perc pereived as a reminder to get closer to Allah. By
having the illness ,the realized that god called therm to perfom more
Islamic teachings in oder to get closer to God.
b. Accepting the Illness as Gods Will
All informants used the words to express how they responded to the
illness related to their belief in Allah (God).
c. Facing gods will Through Being patient with the Illness
The informants also considered Sabar as an essential element in dealing
with their health problems.
d. Being Thankful to God for His Goodness

DISCUSSION

The patient in facing problems in the life because is a way to ask fof help
from Allah when Muslims have problem. As mentioned in Quran Oh you who
have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with
the patient (Quran 2 :152)

CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATION

Hemodialysis and the illness also reminded them about relationship with
God, As well as patience and being thankful to God. This understanding is
needed to provide culturally competent care for their patients.
