CONTEXTUAL FACTORS

MDD Standard 1

The teacher candidate collects data regarding the institutional and classroom contexts,
the characteristics of the pupils as a group and its diversity, using this information to
plan and deliver instruction.

1. Community in which the school is located and/or serves, municipality or

owner and school factors

The institution Liceo Simon Bolivar is a secondary, co-educational school which is

located in Hualpen and it belongs to Hualpen City hall. The educational
community is formed by 240 students, 10 teachers of different areas and 4
educational assistants. There are eight courses, from 1ro to 4to medio. Every
course has an average of 35 students per each. Furthermore, this community has
the integration program; consequently, there are 6 more teachers who work
with disabled children. It is important to mention that there are around 3 students
per classroom who have special needs. Although, there is an important number
of students who belong to an ethnic group, this numbers are not meaningful for
teaching their dialect. Another important aspect to consider is there are many
students of the same subject doing their teaching practice.

1.1. How These Factors May Impact My Lessons:

Firstly, I would like to mention the fact that there is a co-ed school would make
my lessons more diverse in terms of genre. The integration program promoted
by the ministry of education, would possibly interfere in some of my lessons,
also it is especially challenging if I considered that in the classroom are some
students with special needs. The final factor which may impact my lesson is
the number of students who are doing their teaching practice, since we are 5
teachers in the same classroom.
2. Student Characteristics and Their Instructional Implications

2.1 Description of First Characteristic of Student(s) in this Class:

She is a 16 year-old student who is very active in classes, at first I can noticed
that she understands almost everything that the teacher explains; furthermore,
she is very hard worker and when she finished the tasks delivered by the
teacher first than her classmates, she tries to help her friends explaining the
thinks that the teacher said.

2.1.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:

Personally, I think that this is a very interesting student because she does
every task that the teacher gives to her and she tries to pay attention, but
sometimes is easily distract her by her classmates; hence, she will be one of
the helpers for teaching English in class to her classmates. I think she is able
to do every task well because when she catches her attention in the class,
she understands everything.

2.2 Description of Second Characteristic of Students in this Class:

She is a 15 year-old student who does not understand every English class;
however, when I told her that I could help her she really tried to make an
effort. It is incredible easy to distract her, because some of her friends never
stops talking and she lost her attention in the class to listen to her classmates.

2.2.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson

This student get distracted easily; even though she not always follow the
instruction given by the professional teacher practice, she seems to pay
attention to me when I start helping and teaching to her friends. This girl and
her friends is a challenge for me, but I am going to do my best to help her and
her friends.

3. Physical Aspects of the Classroom and Their Instructional Implications: Below,

describe how two physical aspects of the classroom you observed (e.g., posters,
room arrangement, technology) might impact the way you instruct students, for
example, planning, motivation, management, or assessment. For each example,
give a specific instructional implication that will influence how you plan and
implement your instruction.

3.1 Description of First Physical Aspect:

The English lab of the school has the advantage of many features (like big
posters of verbs lists on the wall) which are very useful in classes for the
students. Nonetheless, there is a problem with some of this features because
there is a wrong distribution of materials, some of them do not have relation
with each other and this can be very confused for the students. For instance,
the list of verbs that I mentioned before are hanged in the wall, which could be
a very good strategy; however, the size letter is small and disorganized, with
some missing verbs and their correct forms.

3.1.1 How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson

Probably, this kind of feature would be very useful in my classroom, but it

needs to catch the attention of the students when they searching for an
specific verb, also it has to be organized and with all the verb forms. The
English lab seems to be incredible useful when teaching, especially when
doing listening activities.
3.2 Description of Second Physical Aspect:

Following with the point mentioned before, another aspect that called my
attention is the size that English lab has. Regrettably, the small size of the
classroom provides few spaces to make activities related to movements;
sometimes it is even difficult to monitor the class due to this reduced space.

3.2.1 How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson

Due to the fact of small size, possibly students will refuse the idea of doing
some warm-ups related to movement. It is important to think in another kind of
activities to do with students inside the English lab.

4. Reflects on the importance of knowing about students and the context to

provide quality teaching

First of all, I strongly believe that knowing my students context is extremely

important in order to give them interesting materials, which can help to catch
their attention from the very beginning. Knowing your students is the basis of
doing a good teaching practice and to have little by little their confidence,
which for me is an important factor that contributes to their learning. That is
why we as future teachers need to know our students abilities, necessities
and issues. Furthermore, I can realized that we must be creative in order to
supply the new necessities and abilities that new generations have.
