time,andeventuallytheEditorialBoardrevealedthetargetoftheirdispleasuretobePresident
DuterteofthePhilippines,anunpleasantmorseloffilthwhohadjustbeeninvitedtovisittheUnited
StatesbyPresidentDonaldTrump,whoisalsoanunpleasantmorseloffilth.

IntherunuptoidentifyingMrDuterteastheobjectofitsdisapproval,theTimesobservedthatfor
themostpartAmericanpresidents,RepublicanandDemocratic,havebelievedthatthe
UnitedStatesshouldprovideamoralcompasstotheworld.

Amoralcompass?Thatrangabell,becauseonepersonwhousedthisphraserecentlywasthe
USAmbassadortotheUnitedNations,theegregiousNikkiHaley,whodeclared[7] ather
confirmationhearingthatshewillspeakupagainstanythingthatgoesagainstAmerican
values,becausewehavealwaysbeenthemoralcompassoftheworld.Whatnonsense.

ManyAmericanshavebeenhorrifiedatthewayinwhichtheirleadershavespunAmericas
moralcompassovertheyears,anditisbarelycrediblethatanyonecoulduttersucha
phrasewithsincerity.

Pastpresidentsmayhavepaidlipservicetosuchideals,butfewhavepursuedpoliciesthatwould
inanywayindicatethattheUnitedStatesofAmericawasprovidingaglobalmoralcompass.Post
WorldWarII,WashingtonsethicswereblastedintopiecesbythePentagonsevilfandangosin
Vietnamandsurroundingcountries,wheretheeffectsofitsmassacres,bombingsofcitiesand
towns,anduseofthechemicalAgentOrangearestillbeingsuffered.

Ironically,theNewYorkTimescarriedapiece[8] in2014titledAgentOrangesLongLegacy,for
VietnamandVeterans,whichstatedthatthewarhasnotendedformanyofthe2.8million[US]

servicemenandwomenwhowenttoVietnam.Theseailingveteransareconvincedthattheir
cancersandnervousdisordersandskindiseasesnottomentioncongenitalmaladiesafflicting
someoftheirchildrenarearesultoftheircontactwithAgentOrange.Thewriterclaimedthat

afewextraplotsnexttotheexistinggravesforwherehisdaughters,whoarestillalivebutverysick,
willbeburied.AnditwasPresidentsKennedy,JohnsonandNixonwhoboreresponsibilityforthe
viledespoliationofaregionandthedeathsofsomanyofitsinnocentcitizens.

Moralcompass?Youvegottobejoking.

ThentheEditorialBoardexcelleditselfbypronouncingthatthePresidentsoftheUnitedStates
havebeenencouragingpeopletopursuetheirrighttoselfgovernmentandhumandignity
andrebukingforeignleaderswhofallshort.

ThelistofcountrieswhosepeoplehavebeenactivelydiscouragedbyUSAdministrations
frompursuingtheirrighttoselfgovernmentislonganddepressing,andwhentherewas
movementtosupportpeoplewhowantdemocracytheusualresultwascatastrophe.That
thisstatementwasmadeduringPressFreedomWeekwasindeedironic,becauseitwas
alsoreported[10] thatWashingtonisworkingtopushthroughcontractsfortensofbillionsofdollars
inarmssalestoSaudiArabia,somenew,othersinthepipeline,aheadofPresidentDonaldTrump's
triptothekingdomthismonth.Heisvisitingadictatorshipwhere,ashisownState
Departmentacknowledges[11] ,civillawdoesnotprotecthumanrights,includingfreedomsof
speechandofthepress.Moralcompass,anyone?

PresidentDuterteisagrossviolatorofhumanrightsandentirelywithoutanymoralsense.

hasbragged[13] aboutcommittingmurder...andwhojusthappenstobepresidingoverananti
drugoperationthatbysomeestimateshasinvolvedtheextrajudicialkillingofsome7,000people

Buttherehavebeenandcontinuetobemanysimilardespotsaroundtheworldwhomthe
UnitedStatesandtheNewYorkTimeshavesupportedforyears.TakethetrulyevilPark
ChungHeeofSouthKoreawithwhomPresidentKennedyreaffirmed[15] thestrongbondsof
friendshiptraditionallyexistingbetweenthetwocountriesandwholastedthroughPresidents
Johnson,Nixon,FordandeventhefaintlymorallyconsciousCarter,untilParksassassinationin
1979.Wherewasthemoralcompassinthesehideous[16] yearsinwhichParkwasavaluedallyof
theUnitedStates?

ThentherewasthebrutalSuhartoofIndonesia(1967to1998Johnson,Nixon,Ford,Carter,
Reagan,BushtheFirst,Clinton)aboutwhomin2015,fiftyyearsafterSuhartosmostappalling

andknowthatalthoughNikkiHaleyandSecretaryofStateRexTillersonandtheTweeterinChief,
DonaldTrump,should,asHaleyproudlyannounced[7] ,speakupagainstanythingthatgoes
againstAmericanvalues,theylldothatselectively.Theyadoptthisapproachbecausealthough
USvaluesareConstitutionallyandmorallyatvariancewiththoseofalltheGulfdictatorships,for
example,theyaresubjecttomodificationininterpretationastheygoupthegentlyslopedmoral
laddersoftheCongressandtheAdministration.

ThereareneveranypublicrebukesfortheGulfdictators,inspiteoftheState
Departmentrecording[19]thattheyareintolerantbigotswithnoregardforhumanrights.

WashingtondeclaresSaudiArabiatobeastrongpartner[20] inspiteofitbeingnotedinthereport
[21] onhumanrightsthatitscitizenshavenoabilityandlegalmeanstochoosetheirgovernment

whiletherearerestrictionsonuniversalrights,suchasfreedomofexpression,includingonthe
internet,andthefreedomsofassembly,association,movement,andreligionandpervasivegender
discriminationandlackofequalrightsthataffectedmostaspectsofwomenslives.

ItwouldberefreshingiftheNewYorkTimesEditorialBoardweretogetholdofAmericasmoral
compassandencouragethePresidenttorebukethemonarchyofSaudiArabiaforitslong
standing,embeddedandcomprehensivecontemptfortherightsofSaudicitizens.

ByallmeanscriticizeTrumpforcosyinguptothesavageDutertebutspareustheclaptrap
aboutmoralcompasses.
