I am a graduate from Ahsanullah University of Science & Technology, Bangladesh.

I have
studied Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Environmental Engineering. I have graduated on
December, 2016, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. My CGPA is 3.516 out
of 4 and I am proud to say that, I am/was among the very best in my class. I wish next to enter
The University of Nottinghams graduate program in Environmental Engineering.

You already know that, Environmental Engineering is one of the essential branch/es of Civil
Engineering. Mainly it deals with treatment of different types of hazardous wastes, purification
of air, wastewater treatment, solid waste management etc. The basic courses regarding these
topics were taught in my university. I have tried as best as I can for the past four years, to
increase my understanding of these topics. I wish to study Environmental Engineering at The
University of Nottingham so I can continue my interest of knowing these elements more
effectively and broadly. My specific interest includes/including wastewater treatment by natural
process.

From the very beginning of my undergraduate life, I felt in love with environmental engineering.
I always think about mother Earth. We are polluting her day by day. I always think how to reduce
contamination, how to give effective solutions to protect the mother Earth, how to preserve
biodiversity. So, surrounded by other civil engineering branches, I felt in love with this branch of
environmental engineering, which I felt most interesting and effective for me to save our
environment.

In the fourth year of my university, I had a Project and Thesis course, where I, accompanied by
two of my group partners, did a research on a specific topic. My thesis is/was mainly to
investigate how wastewater can be treated effectively in a natural and cheap way. A natural
system named Floating Treatment Wetland (FTW) was used to treat severely polluted wastewater
of an adjacent lake to my university.

In my university, I didnt get research funding and adequate lab facilities to research and
investigate the quality of treated wastewater effectively. But, I tried as best as I can, considering
all other limitations. I have/had plenty of ideas, but I couldnt implement them effectively due to
the lack of laboratory facilities in my university, lack of research funding. It is a common
phenomenon in Bangladesh, where young graduates come up with plenty of ideas huddling in
their brain, but they cant just do it because of lack of research funding, facilities etc. In spite of
so many limitations, I finished my thesis work with passion, dedication and self-belief.

Bangladesh is a land of numerous surface water bodies like rivers, canals, ponds etc. It is a
developing country. Now-a-days rapid growth of urban communities such as mils, industries etc
increase the contamination of these water bodies. Wastes are directly discharged into these water
bodies without proper treatment. So, contaminated surface water bodies are increasing at an
alarming rate. This increasing number of polluted surface water bodies hampers the ecological
balance between the key elements of the environment. Besides, most of the people in
Bangladesh, use surface water as the main source of water. As most of the surface water sources
are contaminated, there is a big risk of spreading water borne diseases like, diarrhea, cholera, etc.
So many people die. Hence, water pollution is the major problem in Bangladesh, which is
hazardous both for the environment and the people.

Though my country is neither economically stable nor environmentally friendly I still love my
country very much. So, I wish to serve my country by becoming an environmental engineer and
expert in near future. If I get the valuable scholarship/opportunity in The University of
Nottingham, I can fulfill my dream.

Therefore, my ultimate goal is to become an environmental expert. After finishing M Sc in

Environmental Engineering, I would like to continue my study further and finally contribute the
knowledge for my own country.
