APENGLISHLITERATURE
12THGRADE

This classroom was designed for accommodating a 12th grade class in high

school taking AP English Literature. For the purposes of the class and its

audience, it was important to me to grab and maintain the focus of my students,

while simultaneously promoting long reading, analyzing, and lecture periods. To

conform to the needs of my students while also appealing to their desires, I

designed the classroom to create the environment of warmth and comfort. In order

to achieve this, it is essential to consider the color of the room, the structural

layout, provided amenities, and accessibility to the teacher.

The layout of the room has been sectionalized to separate the different

stations offered. The several rows of desk will be utilized for the purposes of

lecturing, teaching, and testing. The desks are placed in rows to promote

productivity and active listening. A research study conducted by Axelrod revealed

that when students were seated in clusters, they remained productive 63% of the

time, while situated in rows the rate increased to 83%. The row layout provides

order and structure, while also promoting attention to individual work.

Instead of putting up posters and flyers on the walls, I opted for the method

of placing several large glass windows. This will provide a daily clear view of the

outside environment, putting the students in contact with nature. In an article on

The Atlantic Times, researchers measured the happiness and well-being of their

students, when put in contact with various environments. They observed students

who experienced hardship and lack of self esteem except when they lived in a

natural environment. The presence of nature shielded them against the stresses that

hindered other children who lived in manmade environments. Additionally, the

color spectrum of the room is intentionally chosen and contributes to creating a

beneficial learning environment. The carpet is a warm red tone, and is covered in

some areas of the room by three rugs, ranging from the shade brown to blue.

According to About Health, red evokes feelings of warmth and comfort, blue is

associated with secure and orderly, and brown is soothing.

The stations in the room are intentionally separated to prevent students in

different stations from arousing distractions near their peers. Aside from the desks,

the round tables area is designated for socratic seminars and group assignments.

The computer station is limited to only two computers because of the class size.

Also, the classroom is connected to bathrooms, one for boys and one for girls.

Bathroom breaks commonly become an excuse to wander the halls and/or skip on

class time. This is an optimal way to tackle this problem by bringing the bathroom

to your students.

As a whole, I believe all factors of the room play a significant role in

creating the proper mood and allowing optimal productivity. I have taken this

opportunity to stray from normality-posters, flyers, or blank walls- and appreciate

the nature of colors and the environment outside. Although it may seem trivial,

these elements can affect behavior and behavior which contributes to the students

willingness and drive to work hard and learn.
