Preface
Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. In fulfilling
this service, man expresses his devotion to Allah. It
is an annual Muslim congress, attended by Muslims
from all over the world. It is performed according to
certain regulations, each of which has a special
meaning.
Muslims meet in one place, Makkah, all
being dressed in one uniform, worshipping Allah.
There is no discrimination between them; no white
man has preference over a black man, neither the
rich over the poor. In this way Muslims understand
and remember the day when they will be resurrected
and gathered before Allah who will account them
for their deeds. Thus, they prepare themselves for
the Hereafter and do their best to obey Allah, their
Lord.
I have intended to make the material of this
booklet as brief as possible. Therefore, the emphasis
has been laid on major aspects of Hajj and ‘Umrah.
I am grateful to Dr. Abdul Rashid Bhat
senior lecturer Islamic Studies and Muied-u-Zaffar.
They helped and guided me in every possible way.
May Allah protect them from all the big and small
evils?
I must express my sense of apperception and
gratitude to my loving father Mr. Maulana Abdul
Jabar Bhat, caring mother and my brothers for
constant solace and encouragement.
Finally, I should also offer my thanks to
Muhammad Siddiq Karnaie, who evinced deep
personal interest in the publication of this booklet.
May Allah help us all in conveying His
words, His guidance and His Din to all over the
world?

Introduction
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Hajj
ولله على النا س حج البيت من استطاع اليييه

And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House
(Ka'bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those
who can afford the expenses (for one's conveyance,
provision and residence); and whoever disbelieves
[i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a
disbeliever of Allah], then Allah stands not in need of
any of the 'Alamin (mankind and jinns). 1

And whosoever disobey Allah and His Messenger
(Muhammad SAW) and transgresses his limits, He
will cast him into the fire, to abide therein.2
Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. In fulfilling
this service, man expresses his devotion to Allâh. It
is an annual Muslim-congress, attended by Muslims
from all over the world. Peace is the dominant
theme. Peace with Allah, with one's soul, with one
another, with all living creatures. To disturb the
peace of anyone or any creature in any shape or
form is strictly prohibited. It is performed according

same way. The Prophet (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa
sallam) removed all these polytheistic ways and
rituals by his farewell Hajj for all times to come.
‘Umrah
Importance of Hajj
Hajj strengthens the unity, equality and
brotherhood of all believers. Its importance can be
realized from the following facts:
1. It removes poverty and sins in the same way
as the furnace removes the impurities of gold,
silver and iron.1
2. The reward of Hajj-i-Mabrūr2 is paradise
itself and nothing less.3
3. It shows that all Muslims are the bondsmen
of Allah; no white man has preference over a
black man, neither the rich over the poor.
4. Muslims get acquainted with one another,
co-operate one with the other, and they
remember the day when they will be resurrected

movements of the arms and legs to show one’s physical
strength. This is to be done only in Tawâf Qudūwm (طواف

round begins with the kissing of black stone and
stop at black stone. 1
If you come across confusion in the number of
rounds of Tawâf, trust on lesser one.
On completion of the Tawâf perform two
Raka‘ah of salâh at station of Ibrâhîm (maqâm
Ibrâhîm).Recite in every Raka‘ah the opening
chapter of the Qur’an (AI-Fatiha). In the first, recite
the chapter number 109(Al-Kafirun) of Qur’an and in
the second recite the chapter number 112(Al-Ikhlas).
If you find crowd at maqâm Ibrâhîm then carry
out two Raka‘ah of salâh any where in Masque.2
Drink Zam-Zam water in standing position and
pour water on your head.3
Go to black stone again. Kiss, touch or point out
your hand towards stone as Prophet Sallallahu
alayhi wasallam of Islam has done. After that you
have to run between the two eminences called Safâ
and Marwâ. On reaching Safâ recite:
ج
ّ حي َ ن ْ مي َ َشَعائ ِرِ الل ّيهِ ف َ ن ْ م ِ َ مْروَة َ ْ فا َوال َ ص ّ ن ال ّ إ

Indeed Safâ and Marwâ are among the symbols of
Allâh. So there is no sin for him who (swiftly) walks
between them while performing Hajj or ‘Umrah to
the house of Allâh. And if anyone does any good
with a willing heart, Allâh certainly knows and
appreciates it.4

Takbîr. Do not offer any type of salâh in between.1
Stay near the mount of ‘Arafât or at any place in
the valley of ‘Arafât. Turn your face towards the
Qiblah. Supplicate Allâh and ask Him for
forgiveness. Recite Qur’anic invocations. The
Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu alayhi wasallam
said: - “the best invocation that I and former
prophets called are:-

Wuquf (standing) at ‘Arafât is a fundamental
pillar of Hajj. The Prophet of Islam mentioned:
ج ع ََرَفة َ ْ ا َل

“Hajj means Arafat (i.e. standing at Arafat means
Hajj)2
Wait from noon to sunset at ‘Arafât. Bit of
moment is sufficient for those who reach ‘Arafât
after sunset and before Morning Prayer.
Mudhdalifah
19
Tahjud salâh. On morning present Fajr salâh with
sunnah and near masque Mash'ar al-Haram face the
Qibla and supplicate Allâh and ask Him for
forgiveness until the morning light shine brightly in
the sky. Just before sunrise collect (seventeen)
pebbles and move to Minâ.1
Spending the night at Mudhdalifah is necessary.
As for women and the weak, they are exempted and
they can go Minâ during midnight.2

in a genuine reason it is permissible also on 11th and

Masque If you do not get place at station of
Ibrâhîm.
If pilgrim is doing Hajj Tamatti' then after
Tawâf al-Ifâda he should run between the two
eminences called Safâ and Marwâ as he did in his
‘Umara. Start from Safâ and end at Marwâ.
Now pilgrim can remove Ihrâm completely and
he is then allowed to perform all the acts that were
forbidden during the Ihram period with no
exception.
(Tawâf al-Ifâda is permissible on 11th and 12th of
Dhul-Hajj)

and finally pelt Al-Jamarât-al-Akabâ (The big
Jamarâ) and do not wait or pray at this juncture.1
Dear pilgrim you can stay only for two days in
Mina. Qur’an mentions in chapter number 2 verse
no.203:-
ِم ع َل َي ْه

ِ ْ مي َ ج

Then whosoever hastens in two days (and depart), it
is no sin to him …2
In both the days you have to pelt the three
Jamarât.
In order to achieve more reward it is better to
stay for three days in Minâ and perform pelting all
the three days.
Because of huge crowd at Jamarât some ‘Ulamâ
have permitted to pelt pebbles during night and one
can use advocate in case he/she are unable to pelt
pebbles to Jamarât.

away from vices and perversity. Do not obey man
made rules. What Hajj means can be achievable
only through the laws laid down by our Prophet
Muhammad Sallallahu alayhi wasallam. The
Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, “Whoever
performs Hajj for Allâh’s sake only and does not
have sexual relations with his wife, and does not do
evil or sins then he will return as if he were born a
new.” 1
A Muslim who intends to perform Hajj or ‘Umrah
should spend in this journey of his pure and lawful
property. He should behave well with his
accompanies. He must achieve knowledge of Hajj
and must prevent himself from sins and other illicit
gains.
