Preface
Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. In fulfilling
this service, man expresses his devotion to Allah. It
is an annual Muslim congress, attended by Muslims
from all over the world. It is performed according to
certain regulations, each of which has a special
meaning.
Muslims meet in one place, Makkah, all
being dressed in one uniform, worshipping Allah.
There is no discrimination between them; no white
man has preference over a black man, neither the
rich over the poor. In this way Muslims understand
and remember the day when they will be resurrected
and gathered before Allah who will account them
for their deeds. Thus, they prepare themselves for
the Hereafter and do their best to obey Allah, their
Lord.
I have intended to make the material of this
booklet as brief as possible. Therefore, the emphasis
has been laid on major aspects of Hajj and ‘Umrah.
I am grateful to Dr. Abdul Rashid Bhat
senior lecturer Islamic Studies and Muied-u-Zaffar.
They helped and guided me in every possible way.
May Allah protect them from all the big and small
evils?
I must express my sense of apperception and
gratitude to my loving father Mr. Maulana Abdul
Jabar Bhat, caring mother and my brothers for
constant solace and encouragement.
Finally, I should also offer my thanks to
Muhammad Siddiq Karnaie, who evinced deep
personal interest in the publication of this booklet.
May Allah help us all in conveying His
words, His guidance and His Din to all over the
world?

Introduction
‫بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم‬
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Hajj
‫ولله على النا س حج البيت من استطاع اليييه‬
‫سبيل و من كفر فان الله غني عن العا لمين‬
And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House
(Ka'bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those
who can afford the expenses (for one's conveyance,
provision and residence); and whoever disbelieves
[i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a
disbeliever of Allah], then Allah stands not in need of
any of the 'Alamin (mankind and jinns). 1
‫ص الله و رسوله ويتعد حدوده يدخله‬
ِ ‫و من يع‬
…‫نارا ً خالدا ً فيها‬
And whosoever disobey Allah and His Messenger
(Muhammad SAW) and transgresses his limits, He
will cast him into the fire, to abide therein.2
Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. In fulfilling
this service, man expresses his devotion to Allâh. It
is an annual Muslim-congress, attended by Muslims
from all over the world. Peace is the dominant
theme. Peace with Allah, with one's soul, with one
another, with all living creatures. To disturb the
peace of anyone or any creature in any shape or
form is strictly prohibited. It is performed according

8
to certain regulations, each of which has a special
meaning.

Muslims meet in one place, Makkah, all being

dressed in one uniform, worshipping Allâh. There is
no discrimination between them; no white man has
preference over a black man, neither the rich over
the poor. There is no royalty but loyalty of all to
Allah, the Creator. In this way Muslims are
acquainted with one another, co-operate one with
the other and they remember the day when they will
be resurrected and gathered before Allâh who will
account them for their deeds. Thus, they prepare
themselves for the Hereafter and do their best to
obey Allâh, their Lord. It is a logical consequence
of the finality of his prophethood. He had to be the
guide and the leader for all men and for all ages.
Allah has provided, through him, a complete code
which is to be followed, and this in itself supports
the concept of finality, because without
completeness, the need for other prophets would
remain. It should be according to the rules and
regulations of the Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu
‘alayhi wa sallam) which He (SAW) announced in
front of his lacks of companions in his farewell
Hajj. He (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said,
"Learn Hajj study from me" 1. Before our Prophet
(Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) Arabs were
performing Hajj. But they had mixed with it their
own polytheistic ways and rituals. They refused
rectification on the base that their ancestors had the

9
same way. The Prophet (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa
sallam) removed all these polytheistic ways and
rituals by his farewell Hajj for all times to come.

‘Umrah

‘Umrah is derived from I‘timar meaning “a

visit”. In Islamic law it means visiting the sacred
House in accordance with the rules set by the
Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa
sallam)

Importance of Hajj
Hajj strengthens the unity, equality and
brotherhood of all believers. Its importance can be
realized from the following facts:
1. It removes poverty and sins in the same way
as the furnace removes the impurities of gold,
silver and iron.1
2. The reward of Hajj-i-Mabrūr2 is paradise
itself and nothing less.3
3. It shows that all Muslims are the bondsmen
of Allah; no white man has preference over a
black man, neither the rich over the poor.
4. Muslims get acquainted with one another,
co-operate one with the other, and they
remember the day when they will be resurrected

In the name of Allah, prayers and peace be on the
Messenger sallallahu alayhi wasallam of Allah. O
Allah! Open for me the doors of your Mercy.1

On reaching Ka’bah stop the Talbiyyah. Keep

you right shoulder bare and left covered by putting
Ihrâm sheet under your right elbow. This is called
Adtibâ'(‫)اضطباع‬. Kiss the black stone while saying ‫سِم‬ ْ ‫ِب‬
‫ل َاْكَبْر‬
ُ ‫لا‬
ِ ‫( ا‬In the name of Allah Who is the Greatest)
and start the Tawâf of Ka‘bah. It you can not kiss
the black stone them touch it by hand and kiss your
hand or if you are unable to touch it then point out
your hand towards stone but this time do not kiss
your hand.2
The place between black stone and door of
Ka’ba is called Multadhim. Carry out Du’â
frequently in this place and call following Du’â
necessarily:-

‫ة‬

Ramal means fast walking accompanied by the
movements of the arms and legs to show one’s physical
strength. This is to be done only in Tawâf Qudūwm (‫طواف‬
‫ )قدوم‬by the men only and not by the women.

15
round begins with the kissing of black stone and
stop at black stone. 1
If you come across confusion in the number of
rounds of Tawâf, trust on lesser one.
On completion of the Tawâf perform two
Raka‘ah of salâh at station of Ibrâhîm (maqâm
Ibrâhîm).Recite in every Raka‘ah the opening
chapter of the Qur’an (AI-Fatiha). In the first, recite
the chapter number 109(Al-Kafirun) of Qur’an and in
the second recite the chapter number 112(Al-Ikhlas).
If you find crowd at maqâm Ibrâhîm then carry
out two Raka‘ah of salâh any where in Masque.2
Drink Zam-Zam water in standing position and
pour water on your head.3
Go to black stone again. Kiss, touch or point out
your hand towards stone as Prophet Sallallahu
alayhi wasallam of Islam has done. After that you
have to run between the two eminences called Safâ
and Marwâ. On reaching Safâ recite:

‫ج‬

Indeed Safâ and Marwâ are among the symbols of
Allâh. So there is no sin for him who (swiftly) walks
between them while performing Hajj or ‘Umrah to
the house of Allâh. And if anyone does any good
with a willing heart, Allâh certainly knows and
appreciates it.4

recite takbîr and read following Du‘â:-

partner to Him. Sovereignty belongs to Him and He
is potent over everything. There is no God but Allâh.
He is alone. He has completed His promise. He
helped His servant and He alone defeated all parties.1

Repeat this act thrice. Descend and walk down

at a normal pace until you reach the valley
(nowadays you find two green lights at the two ends
of this valley) between Safâ and Marwâ. Walk
quickly in this valley and then walk again in your
normal pace. Women should walk normally in this
valley. On reaching Marwâ ascend and follow the
same practice as that observed on Safâ. This
walking up and down between Safâ and Marwâ is
carried out seven times.2
After completing the ceremonies at Safâ and
Marwâ shave or hair cut your head. As for women,
they need only shorten their hair as the Prophet
Sallallahu alayhi wasallam recommended. In this
way your ‘Umara completes. Now open your Ihram.
Dear pilgrim be close with your worship and offer
your salâh on time. Save yourself from bad deeds.
You can get done Tawâf in your normal clothes
until days of Hajj proceeds.

Days of Hajj

8th Dhūl-Hijjah (Yawm-i-tarwiyah)

The pilgrim wears Ihram from his/her settlement

and intends for Hajj reciting:
ً ‫جا‬
ّ ‫ح‬
َ ‫ك‬ َ ْ ‫ل َب ّي‬
Hear I am intending to perform Hajj

(Clean yourself before assuming Ihram as in case of

‘Umara)
Start Talbiyyah and move towards Minâ. Offer
Zuhr(two Raka‘ah), ‘Asr(two Raka‘ah),
Maghrib(three Raka‘ah), Ishaa(two Raka‘ah) and
Witr three and spend the night at Minâ. Next day
9th Dhul al Hijjah, perform Fajr with sunnah.1
9th Dhul-Hijjah (yawm-i-‘arafâh)

Wait for sunrise, and leave for ‘Arafât. Call

Talbiyyah frequently. In ‘Arafât combine together (
‫ )جمييع تقييديم‬Zuhr (two Raka‘ah) and ‘Asr (two
Raka‘ah). If possible observe them in Namirâ
mosque in congregation. If not possible then
perform at your places collectively or individually
two Raka‘ah of Zuhr and two Raka‘ah of ‘Asr at

afternoon on one Adhân(call to salâh) and two
Takbîr. Do not offer any type of salâh in between.1
Stay near the mount of ‘Arafât or at any place in
the valley of ‘Arafât. Turn your face towards the
Qiblah. Supplicate Allâh and ask Him for
forgiveness. Recite Qur’anic invocations. The
Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu alayhi wasallam
said: - “the best invocation that I and former
prophets called are:-

ُ َ ‫ك وَل‬
‫ه‬ ُ ْ ‫مل‬
ُ ْ ‫ه ال‬

There is no God but Allâh. He is alone. There is no
partner to Him. Sovereignty belongs to Him and He
is potent over everything.
Wuquf (standing) at ‘Arafât is a fundamental
pillar of Hajj. The Prophet of Islam mentioned:
‫ج ع ََرَفة‬ َ ْ ‫ا َل‬
ّ ‫ح‬
“Hajj means Arafat (i.e. standing at Arafat means
Hajj)2
Wait from noon to sunset at ‘Arafât. Bit of
moment is sufficient for those who reach ‘Arafât
after sunset and before Morning Prayer.

Mudhdalifah

After sunset proceed smoothly to Mudhdalifah

and recite Talbiyyah frequently. On reaching
Mudhdalifah combine together ( ‫)جمففففع تففففاخير‬
Maghrib(three Raka‘ah)and ‘Ishâ’(two Raka‘ah)
with one Adhân(call to salâh) and two Takbîr. Sleep
and spend the night in Mudhdalifah. On this night
Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wasallam had not offered

Tahjud salâh. On morning present Fajr salâh with
sunnah and near masque Mash'ar al-Haram face the
Qibla and supplicate Allâh and ask Him for
forgiveness until the morning light shine brightly in
the sky. Just before sunrise collect (seventeen)
pebbles and move to Minâ.1
Spending the night at Mudhdalifah is necessary.
As for women and the weak, they are exempted and
they can go Minâ during midnight.2

10th Dhūl-Hijjah (Day of Sacrifice)

Immediately before sunrise when morning light

shine brightly proceed Minâ with calling Tabiyyah.
In the way make haste at valley Mahshar. In Minâ
throw seven pebbles to Jamarât al-'Aqaba one after
another. Utter with each pebble:" (‫ )ال ك اكككبر‬Allâh
Akbar!" Throw pebbles in this day before
forenoon.

Sacrifice

After the throwing of the pebbles, make your

sacrificial offering. Doing sacrifice yourself is
sunnah. 3

20
It is better to sacrifice on 10th of Dūl-Hijjah but
in a genuine reason it is permissible also on 11th and
12th of Dūl-Hijjah.

Halaq (Shaving of the head or hair-cutting)

After completing sacrifice shave or cut your

hairs of head. But shaving is preferable to hair-
cutting as was stated by the Prophet Sallallahu
alayhi wasallam. 1
For women, they need only shorten their hair of one
finger.2
After throwing pebbles, sacrifice and Halaq dear
pilgrim you can discard Ihram and perform all the
acts which were forbidden during the Ihram period
except sexual intercourse.3

Tawâf al-Ifâda or Tawâf ziyarat

Now shift for Makkah. Perform Tawâf al-Ifâda.

This is a pillar of Hajj and without it Hajj is
incomplete. Do not make Ramal and Adtiba'(
‫ )اضطباع‬in this Tawâf. After finishing the Tawâf,
carry out two Rak‘ah of salâh at station of Ibrâhîm
(maqâm Ibrâhîm). Offer salâh any where in

If pilgrim is doing Hajj Tamatti' then after
Tawâf al-Ifâda he should run between the two
eminences called Safâ and Marwâ as he did in his
‘Umara. Start from Safâ and end at Marwâ.
Now pilgrim can remove Ihrâm completely and
he is then allowed to perform all the acts that were
forbidden during the Ihram period with no
exception.
(Tawâf al-Ifâda is permissible on 11th and 12th of
Dhul-Hajj)

Zam-Zam

Drink full Zam-Zam water. The Prophet

Sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, “Drinking water is
effective according to one’s intention. One who
drinks it with cure as intention, Allâh will cure him
by His grace”.1

The return to Minâ (Aayam al-tashrîq)

After Tawâf al-Ifâda, return to Mina and remain

there the remainder of the Days of Aayam al-
tashrîq2. At every noon or mid-day pelt seven
pebbles each one of the three Jamarât. First pelt Al-
Jamarât-al-Sugrâ (The small Jamarâ), then go some
distant apart, face to Qibla and supplicate Almighty
Allâh. Second pelt Al-Jamarât-al-Wusta (The

medium Jamarâ) and pray at this point also. Third
and finally pelt Al-Jamarât-al-Akabâ (The big
Jamarâ) and do not wait or pray at this juncture.1
Dear pilgrim you can stay only for two days in
Mina. Qur’an mentions in chapter number 2 verse
no.203:-
ْ ‫م‬
Then whosoever hastens in two days (and depart), it
is no sin to him …2
In both the days you have to pelt the three
Jamarât.
In order to achieve more reward it is better to
stay for three days in Minâ and perform pelting all
the three days.
Because of huge crowd at Jamarât some ‘Ulamâ
have permitted to pelt pebbles during night and one
can use advocate in case he/she are unable to pelt
pebbles to Jamarât.

The farewell Tawâf (Tawâf Al-Wada‘)

Finally, perform the farewell circuit of the

Ka'bah. The Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wasallam of
Islam said that do not leave Makkah without having
made final Tawâf of Ka ‘bah.3 However, a woman
in a state of menstruation is allowed to leave
Makkah without performing Tawâf Al-Wada‘.

away from vices and perversity. Do not obey man
made rules. What Hajj means can be achievable
only through the laws laid down by our Prophet
Muhammad Sallallahu alayhi wasallam. The
Prophet Sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, “Whoever
performs Hajj for Allâh’s sake only and does not
have sexual relations with his wife, and does not do
evil or sins then he will return as if he were born a
new.” 1
A Muslim who intends to perform Hajj or ‘Umrah
should spend in this journey of his pure and lawful
property. He should behave well with his
accompanies. He must achieve knowledge of Hajj
and must prevent himself from sins and other illicit
gains.

What to do on arriving home

When the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu alayhi

wasallam arrived from his hajj, he entered Medina,
and made (his camel) kneel down at the gate of his
mosque; and he entered it and offered two Raka’ah
of salâh; he then returned to his home.2

O Allah! Make our Hajj, Hajj al Mabrūr and

accept our all good attempts.
