Homework:aDrugTeacher'sPressureYoutoTake

What is the point of all this homework? Everyone complains about it, but no one does anything
to change it. Homework can have many benefits -- memorization and all the other stuff teachers tell
you to encourage you to do it -- but it gets to the point where enough is enough. Coming home from 7
hours at school just to do another 5 hours of homework just doesnt make sense. Especially at a
school where you need sports credits, its difficult to balance academic and extracurricular activities.
Having homework may have its perks, but researchers shows that too much leads to worse grades.

As a freshman, I should spend 90 minutes a day doing homework, but I typically to bring home
a lot more than that. Simple problems can turn into an hour-long task when you stress about what you
have to do next. Whether its a few math problems on a sheet or a essay due the next day thats
worth half your grade, homework builds up. On average, high schoolers receive 3.5 hours of
homework a day. Thats over double the 90 minutes that was mentioned earlier! The expectation that
students should spend their time completing it is impractical!

I have 1-2 study halls a day and I still come home with piles of homework to do. As a student, I
find it difficult to come home home after a long day and instead of having time -- to relax or get other
activities done -- after doing a small amount of homework, you're stuck working.

And having more free time is the only reason we should limit the amount of homework
students receive. Its been proven that having too much homework leads to stress, illness in the mind
and worse grades.

If we limit the amount of homework students receive they are more likely to do better on it and
receive the same amount of benefits they get from the mountains of homework they usually receives.
Not only would less homework reduce stress and the risk of certain mental illnesses, but it would also
give you more free time during the day.

Students spend two thirds of their time for education purposes and sleeping --limiting time that
can be spent doing other activities. There are many benefits to teens spending time with their families
that are taking away when you dont have the time for it. On top of that, there are also many perks for
doing extracurricular activities. It makes it very difficult to do things you're interested in when you're
stuck doing too much homework. If we reduce the amount of homework thats given, it can reduce
stress and illnesses, leave time for other activities and increase GPAs.

Why are we spending 7 hours at school taking quizzes, tests, and doing classwork and then
coming home and doing 3+ hours of homework? Students of all ages--elementary, middle, high, even
college--have valuable things to do after school other than homework:

Free Reading
Reading books of our choice improves vocabulary, writing skills, memory, and reduces stress. I enjoy
reading after school, but I often have piles of homework to finish so I have to put my book down.
Sports
There are so many kids nowadays that are physically unhealthy. Research shows kids that are
involved in a sport or any other extra-curricular activity are happier, and healthier. Students cant
enjoy sports and have this experience if theyre always doing homework after school. I get home
every other night at around ten, and still have piles of homework to do.
Sleep
Sleep is one of the most valuable things for children, and teenagers. Sleep prevents diseases,
improves intelligence, and gives you the right amount of energy you need each day. Research shows
that young kids (ages 6-13) need 9-11 hours of sleep, and teenagers need 8-10 hours. Teachers,
coaches, and parents, are always telling kids to get enough sleep, but thats difficult to do with hours
of homework. The fact that I get home late every other night and still have homework to do causes
me to only get 7 hours of sleep at most.
Family
What about family time? It is important for kids to be spending time with their family. Precious family
time develops social skills, and closer relationships with family members. After school, I do some
homework and then go to dance. After dance, I get home and finish up my homework then go to bed.
Do you see any time I could spend with my family? I dont. Homework makes students too busy to
even enjoy time with their family.
The amount of homework given is unacceptable. Students have more important things to do
after school.

NoworkonWeekends!

The definition of the word weekend is: the period from Friday evening through Sunday
evening, especially regarded as a time for leisure. The key word here is leisure. Doing homework is
not something to do in a time of leisure. We go to school five days a week for around six and a half
hours. That is about 35 hours of cramming knowledge into our exploding brains. The last thing we
want to do on our free days is more cramming. We get two days of so called break. But why does it
feel like less? This is because teachers give us homework, studying, and projects to accomplish over
the weekend. Two days of break vs five days of school - this is an unfair ratio. I remember
numerous times where Im too exhausted to do work Friday night, on Saturday Im busy hanging out
with my friends, so I have to do all my homework Sunday - which essentially takes up an entire day of
the weekend!
Research shows that students need a break, and too much homework has negative side
effects. It stresses students out, and is bad for their physical and mental health. Students need a
homework detoxification; all day we have to go to school and all night we have to do work. Two days
of no homework is all we are asking. In an article, a student quoted Homework on the Weekends is
an Increasingly Depressing Cycle of Disappointment. In this article, students and parents
commented their opinions if homework should be distributed over the weekend. As a result, not only
do students want a break, but their parents share that belief as well! Tenagers want time to rest,
unstress, spend quality time with friends and family, and have fun without having a pile of homework
hovering over their heads.

Homework is torture for the mind. Numerous studies, including this one, say that homework
causes stress, depression, sleep deprivation, and lower grades. For example, according to this study,
homework causes depression because it throws off the life balance, which is equal time in a day for
work, other things, and sleep. On average, homework can sometimes be more than three to four
hours, taking away hours from sleep and/or other things. Some people may think you can catch up on
sleep or other things during the weekend, but the life balance theory says that you need an equal
balance every day to be in the best state of health and happiness, and usually there is the same
amount of homework on weekends too.

We already have seven hours of school, do we really need even more work? In my personal
experience, at times its hard to study for a test or quiz because on top of having to study, there can
be hours of homework. How are we supposed to accomplish anything if we always have so much
homework? Even with two study halls, we still have completely unnecessary amounts of homework.
Anyway, homework doesnt help kids learn because its usually the exact same thing that they
learned in class that day. In a study done in Australia, it was discovered that students who spent
more time on homework got lower grades, not higher grades.

As I have stated, the only thing homework does is stress kids out. Fifty minute class periods
should be more than enough time for kids to learn all they need to know for that day. Homework also
gets in the way of sports. Just because we have practice or a game doesnt mean well have less
homework. There are times when I havent started my homework until eight or nine oclock because
of sports and then I have to stay up late to finish it. Im sure other kids that play sports have also done
this multiple times. Overall, homework can get in the way of sports and other activities, including time
with friends and family.

There is no reason for homework. Homework doesnt improve grades (other than the
homework grade itself), it can even bring grades down because it makes people more stressed and
tired, which leads to bad performance on quizzes and tests. It is even rumored that homework was
invented by a teacher in Italy as a punishment. And now hours of this punishment gets assigned to
kids every night.
