Protection of Animals Act (1970) Cap 66:01

Section 3 Offences of Cruelty
$3(1)(a)__If any person shall: Cruelly beat, kick, ill-treat, overload,
override, torture, infuriate or terrify — or cause or procure — or
being the owner permit, unnecessary suffering to be caused
to any animal
$3(1)(b) Carry or convey, or being the owner permit, in a manner or
position as to cause unnecessary suffering.

Such person shall be guilty of an offence of cruelty and liable to a fine
and/or to imprisonment. (S3 (2) not liable to imprisonment without
option of fine).
Powers of the Police
+ Apprehend without warrant any person who has reason to believe
is guilty of an offence under this act.
Confiscate an animal from a person committing an offence under
this Act
* Order the destruction of the animal without the owner’s permission
if the animal is so diseased/injured it cannot be moved.
Powers of the Court
* Destroy the animal.
+ Deprive the owner of the animal
: e and imprison the person responsible.
* Order costs to be paid and distribute them.

* Call the LSPCA immediately to report an animal abuse case. We
respond to all calls 24 hours a day.
* Ifyou are unsure, call us and we can talk matters over with you. We
handle all matter confidentially.
* Take photos of the animal and the premises or transport if you are
able.
* The LSPCA confiscation team work with the Malawi Police to ensure
we protect the rights of all animals.
