Homework 2: Due Feb. 15, 2017

Please put your name and ID number on all papers
(you can email to ddgies@njit.edu)

1. (5 points) Please find the Laplace transform F(s) for the following functions. Refer to Chapter 2.2 and
Appendix I in the textbook, or the lecture notes.
at
a) The exponential: f(t)= 100 e
b) The cosine wave: f(t)= 100cost
c) The step (constant) function: f(t)= 100(t)
d) The impulse function: f ( t )= (t)

2. (5 points) Please find the inverse Laplace transforms f(t) for the following functions. Refer to Chapter
2.2 and Appendix I in the textbook, or the lecture notes.
1
a) F(s)= s
1
b)
F ( s )= 2
s
1
c)
F ( s )=
(s+ a)

d) F ( s )=1

3. (5 points) In the RC circuit below, we assume R=1000 , C= 0.1F, and at t=O, the switch is opened,
and the initial voltage V0 across the capacitor is 100 V. Not that the voltage across the capacitor V c=V0e-
t/RC
, and the time constant =RC.

a) What is the time constant?

b) At 1 time constant, what is the voltage across the capacitor?

4. (5 points) In the RL circuit below, we assume R=10, L= 10 H, and at t=0, the switch is closed, and the
1etR / L
initial current is 10A. Note that the charging current is given by I =I f ), and the time constant

=L/R.

a) What is the time constant?

b) At 1 time constant, what is the current through the inductor?

5. (5 points) Lightning Flashover. A lightning stroke current running down the tower to the left in Fig. 3
below has a current Is=29.1 kA, and the stroke currents rise time = 2.9 s. Find the flashover voltage V L
if the lightning stroke current Is passes through Equipment Cabinet A, through the ground path conductor
to ground, with Equipment Cabinet B bonded to ground on the opposite end of the ground conductor. Let
L(ground)=0.4 x10-6 H/ft, and let the distance of the ground conductor be 50 ft.
di
Remember that
V =L
dt .

6. (5 points) Using the IEC 60664-1 lecture notes on expected transients and overvoltage categories,
what would be the expected transient level and Overvoltage Category for an indoor industrial UPS system
with a 480 V ac, 3-phase, 3 wire input (that is, the input supply could be 48 delta, ungrounded)?
