WORKPLACE BULLYING: ITS EFFECT TO JOB SATISFACTION AND

PRODUCTIVITY

CHAPTER 1:

INTRODUCTION

We might have experienced bullying at one point in our lives; most of these times were in
school especially in our younger years. It is a problem that is not commonly addressed because
to cry foul would be to admit weakness, making one more vulnerable to the bullying. When it
happens in the workplace, the bullying has more serious effects. The target stands to lose his/her
livelihood, decrease productivity, lack of job satisfaction to do work and lead to depression,
undue stress and even health problems.

Workplace Bullying is repeated, health-harming mistreatment of one or more persons (the

targets) by one or more perpetrators. It is abusive conduct that is: Threatening, humiliating, or
intimidating, or Work interference sabotage - which prevents work from getting done, or Verbal
abuse (2014 WBI U.S. Workplace Bullying Survey). Workplace bullying is a pattern of
persistent, malicious, insulting, or exclusionary intentional or non-intentional behaviors that a
target perceives as intentional efforts to harm, control, or drive a coworker from the workplace
(Lutgen-Sandvik, 2005).
