Data Visualization of U.S.A.

s Annual Energy
Generation by State, Producer Type, and
Source

The dataset contains the contains the yearly energy generation (in Megawatthours) in each
state in the U.S. according to the producer type (Combined Heat & Power, Industrial Power;
Electric Generators, Electric Utilities; etc.) and energy source (Coal, Wind, Solar, Hydroelectric
Conventional, Natural Gas, etc.). This dataset is provided by the government through U.S.
Energy Information Administration Independent Statistics & Analysis. It contains data from
1999 to 2015. It allows for historical analysis and yearly analysis for the way energy has been
generated for consumption in each state in the United States.
Attributes in Dataset:
Year The year for which the data is recorded.
State One of the 50 states of USA for which the
data was collected
Type of Producer The type of production of energy for the
recorded energy generation data
Energy Source The source of energy utilized for generating
the energy
Generation (Megawatthours) The amount of energy generated. The
measure used for visualizations.

General Business Problems:

The general business problems that can be solved using this dataset would help a lot of different types
of businesses that deal with energy generation. Businesses that generate energy in some form would be
interested in visualizing the trends in energy generation. As Climate Change becomes an alarming issue,
this dataset helps us understand Americas reliance on fossil fuels, growth of renewable energy
generation, energy generation levels by state and much more.

Please review the following business questions and provided visuals that answer the provided
questions:
1) What are the top ten states generating energy through renewable sources in 2015?

2) What portion of the energy sourced by hydroelectric conventional has been generated
by electric generators in electric utilities compared to Independent Power Producers?
3) What have been the biggest energy generation sources from 2000-2015?

4) In 2015, how big is the variation between states for the production of Solar Energy?
What State is the biggest producer of Solar Energy?
5) In 2015, how big is the variation between states for the production of Wind Energy?
What State is the biggest producer of Wind Energy?

6) Is solar sourced energy generation growing at a higher rate than wind sourced energy
generation in the past 25 years?
7) In 2015, what were the top five energy generation sources in the United States?

8) What states have the highest reliance on coal for energy in 2015?

A dashboard including a mashup that visualizes the growth of solar & wind energy from 1990
to 2015, the magnitude of solar energy generation across States in 2015, the magnititude of
coal sourced energy generation across States in 2015, and an external link to U.S. Energy
