Introducing STEM

What is stem? Stem is Science,Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Science is the

practical activity or study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through

observation and experiment.Science is important because we need it for life. Without science we

wouldn't have without science we wouldn't have new inventions like cell phone,which means;

cell phones, chargers, and lamps. Science is important because it is used in the study of medicine

which leads to new cures to treat diseases.

Throughout our college bound course, I learned that technology is used in the skill

trades, auto body and electrical engineering. Technology is important because we use it in our

everyday lives.We need it to live or to get places where we need to go.Or maybe to even get in

contact with people all over the world.

Engineering is the application of numbers used to build or to invent things. Engineering

is important because we use it to design buildings, machines,and houses. We need all of these

things to live. We depend on engineers to make safe cars,airplanes and buildings.Mathematics is

the science of number, quantity, and space. Mathematics is important in life because it is used to

perform many daily tasks in our everyday lives.Such as when you're cooking you have to use a

precise amount of ingredients and a timer. The timer is used to make sure you cook the food for

the required timed. Without a timer, your food would burn or be under cooked.Measuring

devices are to make sure you put in the right amount of ingredients. We also use math when we

are working at restaurants,banks, and real estate offices. We need math to help us count

money.Although we don't see the math behind technology, computer programs are developed
using complex math formulas.This is also called coding. Coding is a math language used to

make the computer run programs such as Facebook, SnapChat and Edgenuity.

The relationship between STEM

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are all connected.Within science,

researchers use technology to conduct experiments.They test water to make sure it is safe.They
also make new designs to buildings. The designs must be structurally sound and safe to

withstand all types of weather conditions.

Technology is found in the cell phones and computers that we use during the day.

Before we use them, they have to be tested,created and designed.When the engineers create the

computers and phones they have to create apps for people to use.The apps are designed by

engineers. The engineers must use math to determine the formulas to make sure the apps work.

Engineers use science in all of their activities from developing apps to designing buildings..

Engineers must use accurate measurements using geometry and advanced mathematical

formulas to determine the accuracy of all project. In order to create and build things, engineers

must interpret charts and graphs to make sure the building is built to specifications. Engineers are

behind all inventions. Engineers design bookshelves,drones,satellites and Gps. Engineers use

mathematics to calculate and conduct scientific projects that are applied for our everyday use.

The Use of STEM in Everyday Life

 Everyday I use science,technology, engineering and mathematics . I wake up in the

morning and I turn on the lights and I brush my teeth using safe drinking water that has been

tested by scientist. Then I turn on the radio to listen to music. My lights and my radio are

powered by electricity. Then I get a breakfast muffin from the oven, which was developed using

certain measurements to make a delicious large fluffy muffin. These are examples of science and

mathematics.

In school, I use wireless cell phones,computers, and headphones.They allow me to do

course work anywhere in the building and talk to anybody all over the world. I can listen to

music while I'm doing my work in class This is an example of technology. .The good thing

about wireless phones, headphones and computers is the engineers made them to be used

anywhere without plugging into a power outlet. Mainly the headphones are bluetooth and

speakers.
 Careers and how they use STEM

Medical doctors use science, technology,engineering and mathematics in the treatment of

their patients. They must use all of their scientific knowledge to test their patients. The test tells

whether he or she has symptoms and how much medicine they need to take a day and at what

time. The doctors use the test results to determine how to treat diseases. Doctors might use

scanners or x-rays to look at what is happening inside the human body. Sometimes doctors may

not know what's happening with someone but if they run test they can ask questions and use x-

rays to help find out what is wrong.

Mathematics used in the medical field includes many formulas that you will have to use

to properly administer medicine, One of the main things that medicine focuses on are

conversions for example 1 Liter = 1000 Milliliters,1 Gram = 1000 Milligrams, 1 Milligram =

1000 , and Micrograms 1 Kilogram = 2.2 pounds.These equations would be a few of the basic

conversions that a nurse or doctor would need to be know how to do when giving drugs or

drawing blood. Another huge aspect, that surprised even me was they use fractions.Much like the

ones Im learning in probability and statistics also, the use ratios and proportions like Order -

Digoxin 0.25 mg p.o. QD Drug Available - 0.125 mg per tablet for this you would have to solve

for x and put it into an equation so to me it seems as if nursing is like a big math problem.

Dentist diagnose and treat problems with teeth and gum mouth disease.They check so

they can give advice on diet, brushing,flossing and after looking at their teeth and gums.The

dentist can tell what you ate that day whether you have gum disease or not.Always tells you that

you have to brush and floss or your teeth will fall out ,have to til with gum

disease.Dentist,doctors and nurses are all stem careers that run tests,use scanners,certain
measurements or amounts and that some things are created for them to used.The machines and

equipment they use they won't work without technology.
