Dying can be an expensive
proposition these days. A
traditional funeral service and
burial can run upwards of
$10,000 when all of the
funeral and cemetery fees are
taken into account. This
expense is one reason that
people may consider cremation
as a more affordable option.

death occurred due to a

also has to be signed by an
authorizing agent, has to state
the authorizing agents
relationship to the deceased

permission for the deceased
person to be cremated.
What if there is a disagreement
as to whether a loved one
should be cremated? Who can
sign that form and make that
decision? Suppose Dad dies
and doesnt leave a will or any
other written documents
expressing his last wishes.
Everyone in the family knows
Dad wanted to be cremated,
because he told them so on
more than one occasion. His
statement to control
disposition of the deceaseds
remains can act. The surviving
spouse is third in priority, but
only if no pending petition for
divorce was filed before the
death of the deceased spouse.
A majority of the deceaseds
surviving adult children are
fourth in priority. The order
of priority continues with the
deceaseds surviving parents, a
majority of the deceaseds
surviving siblings, and on to
more distant kin.
In our example above, where
Dad left no will, and his
children wanted cremation but
Mom didnt, Mom would
take priority in making that
decision. If Mom wont sign
the form, cremation isnt an
option. If a divorce was
pending, then the adult
children would take priority
and be able to make that
decision. If Dad left a will and
gave his brother Jim the right
to make the decision, Jim
could sign the cremation
authorization form even if
Mom and the adult children
disagreed.

cremation instead of a
traditional funeral service, its
not enough just to tell your
family. Consult a qualified
professional to ensure that
your last wishes are
documented accurately and
in accordance with legal
requirements.

part of a dental examination. Regu-
lar check-ups, including an examina-
tion of the entire mouth, are
essential in the early detection of
cancerous and pre-cancerous condi-
tions. You may have a very small, but
dangerous, oral spot or sore and not
be aware of it.
Your dentist will carefully examine
the inside of your mouth and tongue
and in some patients may notice a
flat, painless, white or red spot or a
small sore. Although most of these
are harmless, some are not. Harmful
oral spots or sores often look identi-
cal to those that are harmless, but
testing can tell them apart. If you
have a sore with a

likely cause, your dentist may
treat it and ask you to return
for re-examination.
Dentists often will notice a spot or
sore that looks harmless and does
not have a clear cause. To ensure
that a spot or sore is not dangerous,
your dentist may choose to perform
a simple test, such as a brush test. A
brush test collects cells from a
suspicious lesion in the mouth.
The cells are sent to a laboratory for
analysis. If precancerous cells
are found, the lesion can be
surgically removed if necessary
during a separate procedure. Its im-
portant to know that all atypical and
positive results from a brush test
must be confirmed by incisional
biopsy and histology.
Facts About Oral Cancer
Incidence and Mortality
Oral cancer strikes an estimated 34,360 Ameri-
cans each year. An estimated 7,550 people (5,180
men and 2,370 women) will die of these cancers in
2007.
More than 25% of the 30,000 Americans who get
oral cancer will die of the disease.
On average, only half of those diagnosed with
the disease will survive more than five years.
African-Americans are especially vulnerable; the
incidence rate is 1/3 higher than whites and the
mortality rate is almost twice as high.
Risk Factors
Although the use of tobacco and alcohol are risk
factors in developing oral cancer, approximately
25% of oral cancer patients have no known risk

There has been a nearly five-fold increase in inci-
dence in oral cancer patients
under age 40, many with no known risk factors.
The incidence of oral cancer in women has in-
creased significantly, largely due to
an increase in women smoking. In 1950 the male
to female ratio was 6:1; by 2002, it was 2:1.
Prevention and Detection
The best way to prevent oral cancer is to avoid
tobacco and alcohol use.
Regular dental check-ups, including an examina-
tion of the entire mouth, are
essential in the early detection of cancerous and
pre-cancerous conditions.
Many types of abnormal cells can develop in the
oral cavity in the form of red or
white spots. Some are harmless and benign, some
are cancerous and others are pre-cancerous, mean-
ing they can develop into cancer if not detected

Finding and removing epithelial dysplasias before
they become cancer can be one of the most effec-
tive methods for reducing the incidence of cancer.
Knowing the risk factors and seeing your dentist
for oral cancer screenings can help prevent this
deadly disease. Routine use of the Pap smear since
1955, for example, dramatically reduced the inci-
dence and mortality rates for cervical cancer in the
United States.
Oral cancer is often preceded by the presence of
clinically identifiable premalignant changes. These
lesions may present as either white or red patches
or spots. Identifying white and red spots that show
dysplasia and removing them before they become
cancer is an effective method for reducing the inci-
dence and mortality of cancer.

 Ascension Magazine Interviews the Jim Hawthorne

of the Jambalaya Festival, Todd Long.
Ascension Magazine is proud to support the
Jambalaya Festival. With it being the 50th
Anniversary I thought it would be fun to find out
more about, Todd Long, the voice of the festival.
Todd is married to his wife Kathy of 26 years with
two daughters, Meredith 20 and Marissa 18. He
lives in Gonzales but he was raised on Hwy. 22 in
the Acy/St. Amant area. He likes to call it Suburban
Sorrento.
His primary job is used car salesperson at Ledets
Auto Sales but built interest in broadcasting by
working with David Young on APTV, Robin Coco
Sports Scene Live, Clint Falcon Living Ascension, Jeff
Michael Inside Sports and Jenny Heroman at Eatel.
These TV shows all at one time or another covered
the festival.
Todd has been associated with announcing or
broadcasting the festival all together 16 years.
The first few years it was with APTV. Then in
2005, when the festival went to the
current format with a semi-finals, he
became the emcee of the cooking contest.
Tee Wayne Abshire called and explained
the new format to him and asked if he
would be the emcee. He has made us
laugh and spiced up the finals on

and how he got started.

Spring had sprung in New

Orleans but the one that had
sprung into my eye and
awakened me was an exposed

that I was sleeping on.
I rolled over with no way to

witnessed a scene of what must
have been a monumental
struggle or party or
combination of both.

her moral compass.

one of my friends had asked
incredulously. Thats like
when Waylon Jennings moved
to California to get off drugs.
The truck wasnt exactly the
Honeysuckle Rose that Willie
Nelson hauled his family
around in, but it was common
for any number of my gang of
gypsies, tramps and thieves to
hop in the back when we went
out on the town.
Sergeant, I didnt-dont-

back of that truck when were
on the move-especially with all
the madness of last weekend,
I made a feeble attempt to
regain my composure.
To be honest with you, I was
so high I couldnt scratch my
rear without a stepladder. Im
pretty sure I didnt drive,

somebody did, Anderson said
surveying the wreckage.
No, I sighed. That I
know for a fact. We dropped
most of the crew off at the
House of Blues on Decatur-they
were looking for some of those
off-site jam sessions. The only
folks I remember here were Doc
Watson, Three-Finger Freddie,
Boston Blackie and some chick
named Rita.
Strictly the A-list youre
running with, Stone, Anderson
sneered sarcastically. Dont
leave the city. Well be in
touch.
Now I was shaking like a
long-tailed cat in a rocking chair
factory and I knew I could use a
Bloody Mary so I stumbled next
door to a bar. I ordered one
with a double shot of
Titos-vodka made deep in the
heart of Texas and not by those
election-stealing Russians.
Next, I called an impromptu
meeting of the three hombres
who had survived the weekend
with me hoping they could shed
some light on what had
happened and they agreed to
meet me at Johnny Whites
for a liquid lunch.
A wise man once said
that New Orleans was the kind
of place you could hide from
anything-even yourself. Right
now, I just needed a little Big
Easy beat to free my soul and let
me drift away into-as Mike
Tyson might say-bolivion.
Ironically, it was the musician
Three Finger Freddie who ar-
rived first. Generally recognized
as the best stand-up bass player
in the city, Freddie played in
several jazz groups despite not
having a second or third finger
on his left hand.
The loss of the index fin-
ger was a direct result of his for-
mer pool hustling days when

some good ole boys from Bay
St. Louis took exception to his
sharking methods and removed
Mr. Pointer with a machete.
The middle digits removal
came some years later when
Freddie made an obscene
gesture at a heckler during a gig
at Utopia on Bourbon.
How was I to know the loud
mouth was one of Marcellos
Dixie Mafia? he would ask
after relating the story for the
umpteenth time.
Arthel Doc Watson came
in shortly after. Doc was
nicknamed-not for the
legendary blind bluegrass guitar
player, but for his uncanny
ability to forge prescriptions for
Schedule 2 narcotics. He then
used the profits to turn around
and support his own compulsive
gambling habit. He justified his
shady dealings with comments
like, Its good for the
economy or Im my own
personal economic stimulus.
The last to arrive was our
transplant from the Frozen
Nawth, Boston Blackie, who
had actually helped me out on a
few cases in the past. But being
from the Northeast, he retained
a more-that-aggravating elitist
view that everything from that
area was inherently better than
other places.
Blackie had tried to run a few
scams on those dumb-ass
Midwesterners and
dumber-than-dirt rednecks
which was why he now found
himself wanted in all states that
began with I and banned
from those that start in A.
I bought the first round and
in a voice as calm as I could
muster, Gentlemen, the New
Orleans Police seem to believe
that one of us is a murderer

There was no wind when we
first arrived at the lake. No one else
was there which did not surprise
me although the location is a very
good fishing spot. The old man
fished on one side of a small
peninsula and I fished on the other
side. The bites were slow at first.
We both missed a few fish but it
wasn't very long before we'd
caught seven or eight nice catfish
between us. The bites picked up as
time passed and at one point dad
caught a nine pound blue cat. It
wasn't long after catching that fish
that an incident occurred that had
the back of the truck because of
my physical condition.
About halfway through the fish
cleaning process the old man, still
bleeding, had to stop and take a
break. Shortly after I finished the
chore the two of us sat down to
drink a cool one. At that point I
realized what a wonderful day this
had been. Two old friends had
caught a beautiful mess of fish
without the use of a boat in a very
short time. The fish had been
cleaned and they were now ready
to be prepared for the table. There
were no great things of history to
be noted on this day. No great
election won. No great feats in
sports history. No terrorist strikes.

May 31, 2016 happened earlier in the year on

One week prior to May 31st I
was getting a hernia operation. I
was then one week into my recov-
ery when my dad and I determined
that I'd recovered enough to make
a fishing trip. The plan was to fish
from the bank near Lake End Park
on Lake Palourde. We had made a
trip there a couple of weeks before
and we were very successful.
The clock was set for four thirty
in the morning with the hopes of
getting to the lake a little early and
maybe catch an early bite so we
could return home early. Although
I'd been off work for a week now, I
was reminded of my job duties at
1:30 that morning when I received
a call for a couple of employees to
come out and make some repairs.
The calls were made and I returned
to sleep. The alarm finally sounded
off and after a cup of coffee my
dad and I packed the truck for the
trip. The drive to this fishing
location brings me past the present
location of my employment. As we
passed by my mind ventured off to
what my guys were doing at that
moment and digested the reality
that just one week from this day
I would be back on site performing
my duties. It was a humbling
feeling to know that the job can go
on without you and yet a very
rewarding feeling to know that you
another trip with the now
eighty-five year old man. He

somehow lost his balance and had they'll be another day where some

to Heaven
Unfortunately this time of the
year I am looking for guys to
play golf with because most of
my golfing buddies take off for
a 4 day golfing trip to Florida.
Fortunately this year they
extended me an invite.
I havent been on trip for a
while and I have never been on
a trip with 32 men. I started my
packing list with shorts, shirts,
underwear and beer. Just the
basics.
There was going to 7 men in
my condo. When I arrived I was
instructed that my bedroom
was on the 3rd floor. With
duffle bag in hand and a spring
in my step I headed up what
would be known to me as, 34
Steps to Heaven. However by
steps 28 and 29 my stairway to
heaven was slowing to a crawl.
It is amazing to me how a set of
stairs can become a teacher.
They will teach you to make
sure your dumb butt doesnt
leave anything you may need
behind and have to face those
stairs again.
It was time to make the
shopping list. Now, I dont have
to tell you, men are different
from women in most things
and especially shopping. Our

 Ingredients:
Cooking Gourmet at Home
with SNOS SEAFOOD & STEAKS
8 ounces fresh Jumbo Lump crabmeat
1 small loaf French bread
1 Granny Smith apple
A lite and fresh dish for the summer 4 ounces Smoked Gouda (whatever cheese you like)
8 cherry tomatoes
1 ounce fresh basil
2 ounces extra virgin olive oil
2 lemons
Kosher salt & fresh ground black pepper to taste

Method:

First thing you want to do is get those toast points cooked. Set your oven on
375 and allow it to preheat. Take your French bread and cut it into inch slices then lay them out on a
sheet pan/cookie sheet. Drizzle them with olive oil and bake for 5 minutes or until lightly browned.
Remove them from the oven and allow them to cool and get nice and crispy.

Next, grab your crabmeat and put it into a small mixing bowl. Drizzle the crabmeat with a little olive oil, the
juice of the lemon (no seeds), and salt & pepper to taste.

Crab & Apple Bruschetta Now get your cheese. Here we are using Smoked Gouda, but you can use any of your favorite cheeses. Shred
the cheese and set aside until its time to use.
Take out your cherry tomatoes and cut them in and add them to the bowl of crabmeat

Thinly slice the basil leaves

Yield: 10-15 servings
The last ingredient to prepare is the apple. Remove the core of the apple either with an apple corer or simply
by cutting off each side of the apple. Cut the apple into small cubes and put them into the small mixing bowl
Prep: 15 minutes with the crabmeat and tomatoes, then drizzle with the juice of the last lemon (no seeds). This will keep the
apple from t
urning brown.
