2. Life and People in India
Home to an estimated 1.28 billion people, India is the worlds largest democracy. Furthermore, covering 3.2 million
square kilometres it is the seventh largest country in the world in terms of size. With the Himalayas in the north
and the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean to the west, east and south respectively, India is
a place that existed in relative isolation for a long time. This has resulted in the uniqueness of the cultural identity
that India has come to possess today.
Indias historical background is a glorious one. From the times of the local kingdoms to the Delhi Sultanate and
the glorious days of the Mughal Empire, India was a nation of great wealth and power. However, whenever one
thinks of Indias past the days of the British Raj come foremost to the mind. It was during those 200 years that
India wrote its history as a united nation. The fragmentation and fences between the various local kingdoms faded
away in front of the British oppression and the whole nation came together to fight for Independence. After the
first major revolt in 1857, over the next hundred years, through diplomacy and aggression, under the guidance
of great leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, India fought for and finally won
its Independence on 15th August, 1947. This is how history looks at India.
The Indian society can only be termed as a cultural melting pot. There are around 1600 mother tongues spoken
in India, although, only about 150 have a sizeable speaking population. Every region of the country has its own
language or dialect and culture. The Bengalis in the east, the Marathis in the west, the Kashmiris in the north
and the Tamilians in the south are famous for their culture. But most importantly, all these cultures exist together.
There are no restrictions on movement within the country and as a result, people of different cultures have settled
in different parts of the country.
The Preamble to the Indian Constitution declares that we are a secular nation. No religion may be given more
importance by the administration. Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Parsees and many more live together in
near-perfect, harmony. Since the times of Akbar and Ashoka an atmosphere of religious tolerance is being created
and perfected as India progresses towards complete modernisation.
Indias landscape, just like everything else Indian, is broadly diverse. The Himalayas have a majesty and beauty
of their own. The fertile soils of the Ganga Basin and the Punjab Basin contrast acutely with the arid land of the
Thar Desert and the Rann of Kutch. The Sundarbans in West Bengal and the backwaters of Kerala are places
of tremendous natural beauty.
UNESCO has had a busy time in India christening nemerous world heritage sites including the Taj Mahal and
the Stupas at Sanchi. Various monuments like the India Gate, the Victoria Memorial and many others serve as
reminders and guardians of the rich history and heritage of India.
Although there are many flaws that are yet to be remedied, India is still one of the most exciting places to live
in.

2. Social Service Club: Annual Report 2014-15
With your express permission, I, alongwith two of my classmates, founded the school Social Service Club. Our
primary driving force was our wish to share the privilege of an all-round education with those who are less
fortunate than us. Also, I wanted to show everyone that we are all equal, we are all human beings, and only us

human beings who can give humanity a helping hand. I was glad that your announcement during morning
assembly for three consecutive days and our flyers and Facebook posts drew a sizeable group of students to
our first meeting at the SSC. I would like to cordially thank you for providing us with that classroom for our
meetings after school hours. Around 25 people showed up and although only 16 of them actually signed up,
the others agreed to contribute materially what they couldnt physically. Success followed success as our call
for donations was met with great enthusiasm and here I must thank Souvik Mukherjee and Anwar Ahmed for
donating their old guitars. The cash flow helped us buy speakers, drawing and painting materials and even a
whiteboard. My fellow students philanthropic minds overwhelmed me. The children of the slum near our school,
you will be happy to know, attend a government-sponsored school for underprivileged children. Thanks to the
minimal fees, almost all the childrenaround 84 in numbercan attend. The seven girls and boys who cannot
attend because their parents are just too poor are being taught basic English and Arithmetic by Souvika founder
member and I. Shreya Gupta took charge of the dance lessons and Mike Francis and Shuvo Ghosh are teaching
singing and guitar respectively. All three lesson leaders have three helpers each. They divide the work among
themselves and hold classes in the makeshift pandal the people of Sitala Bastito give the slum its namevery
kindly built for us. It was a pleasant surprise that the adults agreed to our plans so quickly and happily. You
have seen our success first-hand when the kids performed at our annual concert. Our future plans include holding
regular reading and writing workshops, introducing computer classes and most significantly the SSC wants to
sponsor the seven kids who do not go to school. All of them are very bright pupils and Souvik and I enjoy
teaching them. However, a school certificate is important. We are currently preparing them for the admission tests.

2. The Escape
In an extraordinary turn of events, which, in the end, were rather tragic, a five-year-old Royal Bengal Tiger being
shifted to a central zoo in Orissa, escaped its enclosure after critically wounding two zoo officials. The officials
were trying to coax the tiger into its new home, when things turned sour. The tiger was, apparently, backed into
a corner through a poor piece of judgement, which forced the tiger into a backlash. The large male pounced on
one of the officials breaking his ribs and then it ripped the right arm of the other official who was trying to rescue
his colleague. Then, finding the coast clear the tiger charged out of its enclosure and apparently pushed itself
through a hole in the boundary fencing. It is being alleged that repair on that piece of fencing was being
continuously put off by the zoo officials for no plausible reasons. Thankfully, the injured officials screams and
the tigers trademark furious roar reached the ears of the other members of staff who rushed to the spot, took
the injured to the hospital and sounded the alarm in the nearby town and villages. The Forest Department rushed
to the scene and immediately formed search parties and started setting traps. In an extremely unfortunate incident,
one forest official came face to face with the cowering tiger and thinking it was about to pounce got scared and
started running blind. He fell off a ten foot overhang and breaking his neck died on the spot. His dying screams
drew the remaining searchers to the spot. It is filtering through that the tiger was so scared that it could not move
and was shivering as if in fever. It was tranquilised and taken back to the zoo. Amidst the huge animal rights
uproar, a bureaucratic blame-game ensued. The biggest question that arose was why the animal was being shifted
in the first place. It had not attacked human beings, not even cattle, so why the sudden need to move it ? A
government official gave some assurance to the animal rights activists that the tiger would be taken back to its
original habitat. A full enquiry has been ordered and a compensation has been announced for the two injured
officials and the family of the dead forest department officer.

2. Social Awareness Week
With the large number of evils that are infecting modern human society, our school organised a compelling Social
Awareness Week to do its bit in the fight against social evils. The event was held between the 18th and 22nd of
May. The first day was dedicated to the opening ceremony and other initial formalities. The chief guest for the
day was activist and Tollywood actress Roopa Ganguly. She had other engagements so she only stayed for about
half an hour in which she lit the lamp to kick off the activities and gave us an informative and inspiring speech
about human trafficking and what can be done to prevent it. She expressed delight at our theme of the week being
Gender Equality. Her speech was followed by the principals address and a short skit and a few dance
performances from the student. All these events were held in the school auditorium. Five other schools were
invited to take part and each school sent a contingent of around 10 to 15 students. The second day was dedicated
to the historical background of patriarchal control over women and the various movements that have fought
against it. On the third day, the theme was Prostitution is not their fault. The focus was on proving that sex
workers are innocent victims of either trafficking or unbearable poverty. We collaborated with Apne Aap Women
and a delegation of three students each from every participating school visited a home for rehabilitated sex workers
that the NGO maintains. We spoke with the women and learnt the painful stories of how they were forced into
that abhorrent trade. Many of us felt guilty of looking down on these women in our former ignorance. After this
solemn experience, we were glad that the fourth day was competition day. The papers that were presented on
the second day were refuted and supplemented. A combined judges panel of teachers from all participating
schools picked the three best papers from Day 2 and Day 4. A debate and elocution contest was held. The
elocution was won by a girl of class XI from La Martiniere for Girls. Our school had decided to merely take part
and not compete. On the fifth day, prizes and certificates were given out. A noted priest from Ramkrishna
Mission gave away the prizes. Our head boy and head girl delivered the vote of Thanks. There were a few more
music performances by all participating schools and finally the programme ended with a full-throated rendition
of the National Anthem. It was also encouraging that many more such programmes were suggested, all of which
will be held at some point in the future.

2. The Train Mishap
Last night around I AM the Howrah-Bhopal Weekly Express became a tragedy on wheels. The driver was forced
to bring the train to halt in between Barhwa and Renukut stations because a tree trunk had fallen on the tracks.
He must have seen the dark figures emerge from the bushes as he immediately made a frantic phone call to the
RPF headquarters. The dacoits heard his voice and promptly shot him. This created tremendous panic among
the passengers. By then around 30 dacoits had already boarded the train. More frantic calls were placed to
emergency numbers which resulted in some of the callers being thrashed by the dacoits. They were armed with
one-shot riffles and machetes. They had their faces covered with black cloth and were wearing black kurtas and
pyjamas. They were speaking in smatterings of Hindi and Bengali. They forced the passengers to handover their
belongings such as phones, jewellery and expensive clothes. Some witnesses and victims reported that the dacoits
misbehaved with some of the women. Surprisingly, it is also being said that the purported leader of the group
was a person of conscience. Apparently a small group of dacoits had dragged a woman out and had attempted
to rape her when the leader hearing her cries came running and reprimanded the miscreants. This led to a short
altercation which ended with the leader fatally shooting one of the miscreants. This subdued the entire group.
Witnesses have reported that theythe dacoitswere waiting for all the sub-groups to finish the looting when
the police arrived with the NSG in tow. That forced dacoits back into the train. This was around 2:45 AM. As
the police commanded the dacoits to surrender, the dacoits in turn threatened to kill hostages. In their desperate
anger they slashed some passengers with machetes in an attempt to scare off the police. Some dacoits tried to
escape and were gunned down by the NSG. Towards the rear of the train there were around five dacoits including
two of the group that attempted the rape. In a daring move, one of the passengers took the rifle away from an
unattentive dacoit and buoyed by this many passengers displayed web mentality and attacked the dacoits taking
away their weapons. The mob moved towards the front of the train and scared the remaining dacoits who jumped
out of the train and tried to shoot their way past the police but were eventually gunned down. Railway officials
declined to comment on the two-hour fiasco while the passengers were relieved it was over. The wounded were
taken to a hospital in Garhwa. The railways minister announced compensations all around but declined to divulge
any numbers. He did not make any comments other than giving an assurance of a full enquiry. At the time of
going to press, officials were still in shock and no enquiry had begun.

2. Review of a Music Video Album
Pink Floyd is a progressive rock band from England and a cult phenomenon of the 1970s and 80s. Their most
definitive video album and an innovation in the music industry was more a movie than an album. Pink Floyd :
The Wall released in 1982 is basically a movie based on the storyline of the songs on the studio album. It is a
story of a boy who has lost his father in the war. His mother is so over protective that he feels oppressed. There
is barely any speech throughout the movie. The camera follows the boy as he slowly grows up into a rockstar
and slowly begins to lose his mind. The songs from the album playout in the background as the movie goes
on. It is the songs that tell the story. Each song depicts a particular emotion of the boy. The story is inspired by
the life of Roger Waters who was the founding member and lead singer of the band. Hence, the boy in the movie
is aptly named Pink, since it is the story behind Pink Floyd. Bob Geldof turned in an outstanding performance
as the grown up Pink. Kevin McKeen as little Pink was tremendous as well. Along with the acting, the music
with potent and pertinent lyrics will move anyone to tears. Songs like The Thin Ice and The Happiest Days
of Our Lives depict the oppressive nature of modern education and schooling. In the flesh, One of my turns
and others show the rebellious sentiments of the modern youth. Then, in the second half, the haunting music
and almost disturbing animation show slow descent into megalomania and near insanity that Pink falls into. He
can no longer take the pressure of performing for the adoration of his fans. His girlfriend whom he deeply loved
has left him. So he starts building The Wall to keep all good sentiments out and becomes a Hitler-like figure.
But then he suffers from pangs of conscience which are brilliantly depicted through the lyrics and animation of
the songs waiting for the worms and The Trial. Ultimately, Pink finds himself guilty of many sins and finally
brings down the wall which has left devastation in its wake. This album also contains the song Another Brick
in the Wall with the iconic line We dont need no education which became a cult anthem of students worldwide.
Another immortal song of this album is Comfortably Numb which can sooth any troubled soul. Overall, it is one
of the most definitive and iconic albums of all time.

2. Analysis : Cormoran Strike
I recently read the book The Cuckoos Calling by J. K. Rowling writing under the pseudonym of Robert Galbraith.
Strike is a bulky 63 retired military intelligence investigator. He was discharged from service after losing half
of his right leg in the Afghan War. He was dishevelled, dry hair and his large hairy arms give him the appearance
of a grizzly bear. Strike now works as a private detective in London. But his business is struggling. Since he is
the lead character, we follow him around during the investigation. The impressive way he sounds out the
suspects and presses them into giving him clues, no matter how cryptic show us that he possesses great talent.
His meticulous search of the crime scenes is reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes. His misguided attraction towards
his already engaged secretary is a point of sympathy. He strives to curb his emotions but fails miserably. His
old life haunts him and he has nightmares of the numerous tragic experiences. Strike is not a typical heroic figure.
He is unfit, is not good looking and has just come out of a tumultuous relationship with a woman he loved but
who was incredibly emotionally unstable. However, despite all his flaws, the enterprise he shows in solving the
mysterious murder especially when the police thought it was suicide is tremendous. His sharp brain and
sympathetic heart makes him an ideal character for the modern generation to idolize. Strikes sheer will to go on,
despite all the hardships he has to endure with a famous father who does not support his illegitimate child and
a drug addict mother who died of an overdose, Strike is a true child of misguided modernity. He was given no
chance in his early childhood till he was rescued by his aunt. He came from absolutely nothing much like J.K.
Rowling herself and became a sensation in the world of fictional detectives.

2. Reducing Stress in Examinations

With our society doing its best to catch up with the modernity of the rest of the world, our education system
needs an update, especially with regard to examinations and the stress it causes to the students. The fear of
failure is the primary catalyst of this stress. The mad competition over getting more marks than the rest of the
class does more harm than good to the academic prospects of a student. The concentration falls more upon
mugging up the facts than actually learning. Something must be done to shift the focus back on to actually
learning than just simply getting marks. Just changing the way examinations are held can make a difference. Exams
may be held frequently so that the pressure of performance may be distributed and not concentrated on the
terminal exams. A larger variety of subjects may be introduced so students can have a greater pool of choices.
Also, students must be allowed flexibility in choosing subject combinations. They must not be forced to study
subjects they do not like and as a result are not proficient in. Each student must be allowed to appear in
examinations for one subject at a time. More practical courses should be introduced so the students can see the
first-hand application of what theyre learning. At the same time, students should be tested on what they
understood about the various concepts they have been taught instead of objective, topic-based questions which
usually dont have any real life implications. If we can simply get rid of the whole percentage marking system
and introduce a grading system so that there will be a little less competition over ranks. Also, this will prevent
the segregation that is rampant in many classrooms between the good and the bad students. I hope that the
Board of Governers will consider some of the suggestions mentioned and some of them will even be implemented.

2. Cultural Festival
On the 15th of November, just before the start of the winter vacation, my school St. Pauls Mission held its
first ever Inter-School Cultural Festival. It was held on the school premises with events distributed over the senior
and junior campuses. The Chief Guest for this special occasion was celebrated former principal T. Ireland. The
inauguration took place at around 9 AM in the senior school hall after which the plethora of planned events
commenced. Six other schools participated, namely Union Chapel, St. Stephen, Loreto, Don Bosco, St. Josephs
and Pratt Memorial. Separate classrooms were provided to each school on the Church Block of the senior campus.
We had worked during and after school hours to get the fest off the ground. Delegations were sent to the above
-mentioned schools and thankfully, they all accepted our invitations. Myriad events took place. Both campuses
were buzzing with activity around noon as almost every event was underway at time. There was a dance
competition, an eastern and western music competition, a very competitive quiz and a lively elocution contest.
All these events took place in the main hall of the senior campus along with pot painting, t-shirt painting, face
painting and an open air fashion show on the junior campus. The quiz turned into a fierce battle between our
school, which I was representing along with two fellow Paularions and Loreto. The girls from Loreto were very
well-rounded in their knowledge of trivia as well as important facts. We gave them a long run for their money,
finishing the main quiz in a tie at 75 points each which forced the quizmaster to take it into sudden death. It was
nailbiting stuff with every correct answer being cheered by students of the respective school. Even participants
of other events stopped their preparations to come and watch. But hard luck to us, on the ninth sudden death
question, our team faced a fair bit of confusion over the answer and ran out of time. The Loreto girls won. I was
deeply disappointed but also happy that we did so well. There was also a skit competition where each school
performed a five minute skit. Every performance was moving with the skits focussing on various important issues
like trafficking, oppression of women, drug abuse, etc. Don Bosco took the prize with their hilarious yet touching
take on a common scene from the life of a child with an alcoholic and abusive father. Sweta Nihalani of Loreto
was the standout performer with her flawless rendition of My Heart will go on. She drew a standing ovation
from the entire audience. All the participating students and others who had come to watch were thoroughly
entertained and very pleased with the organization. For me it was a great privilege to be part of such an event
in my last year at school. Hopefully, the tradition will continue and perhaps next time we will have a two-day
event with special appearances and performances from local actors, entertainers and musicians. That will complete
the whole experience of a school fest. But I would be glad, if the purpose of socializing with other schools and
making new friends is fulfilled each year.

2. A Bird Show
From the 19th to the 21st of December, the Paschimbanga Exotic Bird Lover Organisation held the second
instalment of their Exotic Bird Fair in College Square, on College Street. Some jewellery giants and a clothes brand
sponsored the show. A large Pandal was constructed around the outdoor swimming pools of the famed swimming
club. Just like the year before, the event generated tremendous interest in the locality. Locals of all ages attended
alongwith enthusiasts from all over the state. Each bird was given a different enclosure inside the Pandal. There
were at least fifty different varieties of birds ranging from tiny Pale-billed Flowerpeckers to gigantic macaws. The
parakeets and macaws with their vibrant plumage and dignified stature stole the show. The outstanding
participant was an electric blue Hyacinth Macaw from the Amazon rainforest. It was almost a metre in length and
had a wingspan of around 1.4 metres. It had black flecks under its wings, a large black beak with bright yellow
along the sides of the lower beak and circles of yellow on the side of its head which looked like earrings. It was
a beautiful bird and a testament to Mother Natures creative imagination. There were other species as well, like
the Lears Macaw, the Great Green Macaw, the Blue-and-yellow Macaw among others. There was also an emu
which drew great interest from the kids. The owners of the birds were overwhelmed by the public interest. The
judges panel included noted actor and passionate wildlife photographer Sabysachi Chakraborty adding a certain
glamour to the occasion. The Hyacinth Macaw easily took first prize both from the judges and by popular vote.
The event was front page news on popular newspapers and it went viral on social media. It was a great
endeavour of the Paschimbanga. Exotic Bird Lover Organization and although the birds are no longer in their
original habitats, their owners must be thanked for taking the birds in and keeping them safe from the dangers
that human society is passing on their habitats.

2. Respected Principal and teachers, and dear friends !
It is, no doubt, a matter of privilege for me to say a few words in honour of our worthy teacher, Sh N.K. Das. He
is retiring today. Tomorrow he will not be available to us with his broad, smiling face. Who will not miss him ?
It is difficult to forget his role in our life. He was not a mere teacher to us. He was a father-figure. He shared our
pains and joys. He tried to help the poor students in every possible way. When I came to join this school, I had
little money to buy costly books. It was he who understood my problem. He recommended all the books for me
from the library. Once I wanted to go to my village to see my ailing mother, but I had no money. Seeing tears in
my eyes, he inquired into the matter. Then he gave me a hundred-rupee note and asked me to go to my village
at once.
He is an ideal teacher in every respect. He encouraged original thinking and creativity. He always encouraged
us to raise our doubts in the class. He did not insist on rote-learning.
Besides being a complete teacher, he is a thorough gentleman. He is very kind and polite. We have never seen

Sir, though you are leaving us, we will never forget you. In fact, we all will miss you all the time.
With all the best thoughts and wishes, we bid you farewell. Thank you.

2. Air Pollution
Air pollution is undoubtedly the most challenging problem in the world. It is worst in big cities. The air in cities
like Beijing, Delhi, New York and London is greatly polluted. In most of our cities and towns, it is so polluted
that one feels suffocated at times. It causes many health-related problems like asthma, bronchitis, lung diseases
and even cancer. It is a threat to life in all forms.
The number of vehicles run on petrol and diesel are on the increase. The poisonous gas emissions caused by
these vehicles pollute the atmosphere. It has led to the increase in average temperatures which has led to what
we call global warming. Freak weather conditions, droughts, floods, storms and hurricanes have become frequent
in all parts of the world, causing huge damage to property and human life. The smoke emitted by factory
chimneys, the excessive use of power to run ACs, geysers, irons, etc. at our homes, construction of high dams,
roads and bridges, high-rising buildings have also contributed to the rise in air pollution.
The solutions to check air pollution are not easy to put into action, but they have to be sooner or later. We have
to decrease the pace of our development which is being done at the cost of nature. We should reduce our
dependence on motor vehicles and power-consuming gadgets. We should reduce the number of air-polluting
vehicles. We should resort to pooling of cars for commuting to office. Bicycle is our saviour. The less we consume
power or energy, the better it will be for all of us. In short, we all will have to grapple with air pollution at every
level individual, societal, national and international.

2. Students and Social Service
Students in our country remain cut off from reality. They remain unaware of their society and its problems. The
system is such that nobody wants to connect them with the society of which they are an integral part. Parents,
teachers and educationists must think of ways and means to make the students understand the problems and
issues facing the society. They must be encouraged to involve themselves in social service actively. It would
be better if social service be a part of their curriculum.
National Service Scheme (NSS) is the best option for the students. By joining it they would be able to undertake
various projects designed for the welfare of the poor people of society, especially those of the countryside. They
can adopt a village and help the people repair roads, ponds and bridges, plant trees and start cleanliness
operations. In cities they can help spread the message of communal harmony, national unity, afforestation, etc.
They can also join National Cadet Corps (NCC) and learn military training.
The students should be made a part of the Swachh Bharat and other such national-level movements. Being
energetic and visionary they can help the authorities bring out necessary changes in the mind-set of people.
They can be a force to dissuade people who frequently litter the roads and lanes, spit, deface walls and indulge
in such other dirty practices.
Educationists should seriously think of making rural service essential for all students before getting their first
degree. This has already been done in countries like China. Students will be better equipped to understand the
rural India after their stay in villages. They will get the opportunity to get first-hand knowledge of the life of
villagers and the problems faced by villagers.
If students are involved in social service, they will not remain dreamers and escapists. They will become realistic,
down-to-earth persons with pragmatic approach to deal with the problems of society when they become teachers,
engineers, doctors, architects, etc.

had their lessons too. The important thing is to understand them and overcome them.

2. Honourable Principal, respected teachers and dear friends, good morning !
I stand here to speak on an important issue Time Management. Most of us fail due to mismanagement of time.
You must have heard a lot many people saying I have no time. Actually, those persons do not know how to
manage time. A person who knows how to divide his time for each task will never make such a statement.
Remember, friends, wastage of time means sure failure. You must be aware of the value of time. Time once lost
is lost for ever. So be clear about your long-term and short-term goals. Then divide the time according to your
priorities. Give time to each task you want to accomplish everyday. Prepare a self-imposed timetable, and strictly
follow it. You are sure to be tempted by many things to stray away, but control yourself and follow the timetable.
Learn to say no to a friend who invities you to a movie during the time of your studies. Make your timetable
known to your parents, friends and relatives.
If you are able to manage your time well you will have the desired success in a short time. So never blame others
for failure. Blame only your time management.
Thank you

2. An Inter-School Debate competition
An inter-school debate competition was held in our school on June 15, 20... Ten teams from different schools
took part in it. Sh. M.N. Joshi, the local MP, presided over the function held in the school auditorium. The panel
of judges comprised of eminent speakers and writers, headed by Prof. M.L. Sapra, a noted Hindi poet. The theme
of the debate was : Youngsters of today are rude and aggressive.
The function started with Saraswati Puja. The principal of our school introduced the theme of the debate. Then
he said a few words about the Chief Guest. He thanked him for sharing his precious time to encourage the budding
speakers. He also introduced the panel of judges, one by one.
The stage was conducted by our English teacher, Mrs Reeta Bawa. She kept the audience spell-bound with her
couplets, sparkling wit and amusing comments.
The debate contest began in the right earnest. Some of the speakers spoke against and some for the motion.
Those who spoke against the theme reasoned that todays youngsters are frank and bold and not meek and
submissive, and that it was wrong to call them rude and aggressive. Those who spoke for the motion argued
that todays youngsters are spoilt children, and quoted from newspaper reports the acts of hooliganism, road
rage, etc. to prove that the youngsters are now really rude and aggressive.
When my turn came, I spoke against the motion. I must have reasoned well to prove my point. That is why, I
was awarded the First Prize. The host team was able to snatch the trophy.
Towards the end, the Chief Guest delivered a brief speech. He advised the young speakers to hone their skills
with practice.
The function came to a close with the recitation of national anthem by the students of our school.

time of ingested food; there is less desire to eat. Thus they help in keeping a check on obesity. But they

2. Modern Hobbies
We all have been pursuing such hobbies as gardening, photography, stamp or coin collecting, reading books,
etc. All these hobbies have proved their usefulness. No one who follows any one of these hobbies has ever
regretted, for they are beneficial in every way. However, the youth of today are engaged in different hobbies.
They dislike the traditional pastimes.
Most of the youngsters now spend their spare time in chatting on the mobile, browsing the Net or playing some
video games. They have become obsessions with them. They have come to spend so much time on them that
parents and teachers are equally worried. They neglect their studies for these so-called hobbies. They should
restrict their time on pursuing these pastimes. Only then can they derive some benefit from them.
Some of our youngsters have come to spend their spare times on adventurous sports. These sports include
rafting, surfing, skiing, rock-climbing etc. No wonder, these games provide a lot of thrill and excitement.
Then watching TV is also a modern hobby, though it has become quite time-consuming. No doubt, TV offers
some good, wholesome programmes which are a source of amusement as well as learning. Our youngsters should
watch TV, but they should not do so at the cost of their studies.
All these modern hobbies pale into insignificance before the traditional ones. Gardening for example, is good
for health. Photography, if pursued seriously, can become a source of ones livelihood. Reading books is clearly
helpful in making our careers. Stamp or coin-collecting provides us much useful knowledge about our past. Thus,
we should not ignore the traditional hobbies to recreate ourselves during our spare time.

2. Comedy Nights with Kapil : A Review
Television shows seldom deserve much critical notice as most of them cater to cheap tastes, arouse sentiments,
create or renew superstitious beliefs and misguide the viewers (read women). They go on unwinding like
Daropadis sari in the well-known Indian epic. After a month or so of their disappearance, no one remembers them
as they are hardly worth remembering.
Comedy Nights with Kapil has completed two years since its sensational start in 2013. It has been very popular
throughout in India and abroad. Each episode begins with a hilarious act by Kapil Sharma (Bittu Sharma) and
various characters, and ends on the magazine section in which Kapil interviews one or more film stars or other
celebrities, with comic interludes by his co-actors, namely Sunil Grover (Gutthi/Kapils father-in-law or mother-
in-law), Ali Asgar (Daadi), Upasna Singh (Bhua) and others. Navjot Singh Sidhus presence as permanent guest
is remembered for his one-liners or couplets, mostly made off-the-cuff. What has made this comedy show
extraordinary ? The question is not very baffling. Kapils ready wit and awesome comic timing are the two qualities
that make the whole show stand out from all other such comic shows which pale into insignificance before this
comic giant. You will find hardly any episode boring. Kapils sudden witty remark makes you laugh like mad.
Among his co-characters I would bet on Upasna Singh (Bhua) and Sunil Grover (as Kapils father-in-law). There
is hardly any film superstar who has ever grudged in appearing in the show to promote his or her film. The
magazine section has indeed been a master stroke of the master showman that Kapil is. The people still love
to watch this show, though it is about to renew itself with a new host. Hats off to Kapil Sharma !

2. The Perils of Weak Will-Power
We have a number of examples from real life and stories in our novels and epics which show that a man with
strong will-power overcomes the most deadly obstacle and succeeds. Men of strong nerve attain the desired
goal sooner or later. Nothing deters them from success. On the other hand, men who have weak will-power easily
give in, fail and even perish.
A weak-willed person is unsure of his own capabilities. He is timid by nature. A slight wind in the opposite
direction scares him. He is unable to face any difficulty. The result is that success comes to avoid him. He begins
to blame fate and circumstances for his repeated failure. He loses his confidence, becomes a cynic and hates
everyone around him.
Weak will has its adverse effect on ones physical health. A person who cannot doggedly pursue anything can
only be a loser. A loser confines himself to his four walls. He cannot be a good player. He becomes a chronic
thinker and loses his touch with reality. This often makes him weak in body. Sometimes he catches allergies and
many other ailments.
A person who has no control on himself is likely to give in to temptations easily. He becomes morally corrupt.
He can take or give bribes. He can steal. He can rape. Only a person who has strong will power can resist all
earthly temptations.
One can strengthen ones will power, though it is not an easy task. Certain rashness sometimes proves to have
a positive effect on ones mind. The company of good people phycially, mentally and morally strong people
is always helpful in making ones will power strong. A weak-willed person must avoid the company of shirkers,
cynics and frustrated persons.

2. Honourable Principal, respected teachers and dear friends, good morning !
I am going to speak on a very important issue : the ill-effects of junk and fast food. Most of my friends are very
fond of chips, noodles, pizzas, burgars, and what not. A pizza and a bottle of coke delight them. No doubt, such
food is tasty and easily available.
But how far is it good for health ? No one wants to think about it. Those who regularly eat junk and fried food
and have fizzy drinks, first of all, suffer from digestive problems which slowly lead to other problems. They
become obese. Obesity is the major cause of diabetes, hypertension, heart ailments, joint pains, and even cancer.
It is not difficult to detect obesity and obesity-related problems among school-going children.
Friends, make it a point to eat pizzas and burgars sparingly. Avoid junk food as it has no nutrient. Prefer to eat
simple home-made food, and replace fizzy drinks with lemonade, milk, lassi and other such traditional drinks.
Parents and teachers should also play their role in changing these bad eating habits of children. Parents, in
particular, should themselves avoid eating useless, harmful food. They should remember that if they eat junk food,
they can never persuade their children to avoid it. Teachers should give proper education to their students about
what to eat and what not to eat. Only then can we escape from the ill-effects of junk and fast food.
Thank you.
