local record a run for its
money

A dollar and 25 cents in quarters weighs
about one ounce.
That’s how close Roger Hellen, 38, of
Franksville, Wis., is to breaking the record
for the world’s largest brown trout set last
September on the Big Manistee River by
Rockford resident Tom Healy.
The trout Healy caught, and the weight
to beat for the record books, is 41 pounds
and 7 ounces. Even though the 41-pound 8-
ounce brown trout Hellen caught on Friday,
July 16 in Lake Michigan near Racine, Wis.
is bigger, it may be one ounce away from
breaking the record.
According to the rule book of the
International Game Fish Association
(IGFA), “to replace a record fish weighing
25 pounds or more, the replacement must
weigh at least one half of 1 percent more
than the existing record.”
The math gets tricky, but Jim Vitek,
world records coordinator for the IGFA,
crunched the numbers.
“It’s been overwhelming. It’s
really been something else.
It’s one of those things you
never plan on.”

thing right now is speculation because
nothing yet is official.
Hellen caught the fish at the Salmon-
A-Rama fishing contest, sponsored by
Salmon Unlimited, in Racine, a city halfway
between Chicago and Milwaukee. He not
only landed the trout, but also the grand
prize of the tournament, which fetched him
$10,700.
“We knew it was a brown trout. We
knew it was big,” Hellen said in a telephone
interview with the News Advocate. When
he got the fish onto his boat, he said he was
“absolutely floored.”
“We never expected it to be that big,”
he said. “We were lucky. As soon as it hit
the net, it spit the hook. The whole thing
