I had only been working at the hotel a little less than a week.

The shifts had been spread

out over a couple of days and nights each week. And while I wasnt thrilled about how much of a
tight ass the general manager was, I had taking up the new job rather well. I had been given the
night audit job at a fancy hotel. The setup of the hotel was an old-fashioned fancy British style,
with a massive ball room, expensive dcor, nice curtains, and looked similar to the Dolphin in
Stephen Kings 1404 movie. It was extremely nice, taking mostly rich, sophisticated guests.
There was a nice speaker system that generally played jazz, swing, and big band in the lobby.
Nothing too stimulating, but enough to lighten the mood when guests come in.
This is where my story starts when a guest, or rather guests came in. It was a group
of about ten people, with a man who looked in his late sixties with silvery hair in a comb over,
and what I assumed was his family. Another woman and what appeared to be her husband,
three children, and what looked like another set of parents and four kids as well. My normal
duty is night audit, however because I hadnt been here too long, Id been requested to be here
during the day. I peered down the hallway as I was walking to the desk, and saw the other desk
clerk had accepted the family as I was still in the corridor and I looked to the desk, and saw the
most beautiful girl Id ever met. She was short and small, possibly around my age, maybe a year
or two younger, with light blonde hair that was slightly wavy, going a little bit past her
shoulders. He face was perfect. Her skin was pale, but not ghostly white. She wasnt wearing
any lipstick or make up, her lips were a light pink. She was wearing a light tan sweater that she
had pushed the sleeves up to just before her elbows. She had on a white skirt, with deep brown
seems, and had on flat, strapped sandals that were a light grey colour. Her toes were painted a
pale blue-grey.
After seeing this family was already getting squared away with checking in, I started to
turn back in the corridor, and she looked right at me and our eyes met for what seemed like
ages. She had blue eyes. I felt like an idiot, my body started to turn to leave, but my eyes stayed
right on her, and then it was gone, I had turned down the hall and carried on. I took about 3
steps before I heard it:
Hey, a soft yet confident voice said from behind me. I knew it was her, just knew it,
our eyes met for such a long time, itd be impossible to it to be everyone else. I turned around.
Good afternoon miss, welcome to the Fremont hotel, I impulsively said as I turned,
after having been made practice so many time over and over. If theres anything I can do for
you, please dont hesitate to ask. I spoke almost robotically.
Yes, enough of this gay banter, she replied to my comments, rather unorthodoxly.
There actually is something you can do for me. She said it with such demeanor, yet, it wasnt
childlike, nor was is belittling in anyway.
See, Im staying here at the hotel for 3 days while our new house is being finished, and
Im transferring to St. Judes. I was wondering if ou could show me the city. Or at least give me
something to do.
Why was she asking me this? I thought to myself. I wasnt particularly attractive. I
hadnt said anything about living locally, nor did I distinguish myself as an entirely sociable
person, which clearly she was.
Me? I squeaked out, realizing this girl was completely out of my league. Then I realized
I said me when she asked about something to do. I gasped, hoping she hadnt noticed my
error. She walked closer to me and stood on her toes to lean in close to my ear, which wasnt
helping her cause too much, because I stood only at five foot eight. She whispered softly as I
looked down at her feet.
Room eight fourteen. Ever so softly.
What?
Your nametag says Night Audit, she observed, obviously on the right chest of my
black uniform. She extended her hands and wrapped her arms around me, and I shook for a
second, then looked down the corridor where she came and didnt see anything. She was like a
child wrapping up on a parent, but with me, and I wasnt entirely pleased. Yet, she was so
beautiful that, while these are behavours I never consider or participate in, I wasnt entirely
agitated by, or distressed about. Im sure youll be here during the nights, so on your rounds,
come to my room. She smiled, laughed somberly, and disconnected from me. She spun slightly
on her back foot as her dressed had spread with her movement.
Ever so elegantly, I thought as she backed away. Her movement was so fluid, and in a
blink, she was back down the corridor turning to be with her family, where I lost sight. I turned
back, and exited through the side door, and hopped in my run-down car, to try to get home an
get some sleep before the night shift in eight hours. After what just happened, Im not sure I
could sleep, and there was absolutely no doubt in my mind that Id show up that night tired as
hell, just acting as a ghost during the entire shift.
I got back to my apartment, and let the dog out. He was a miniature schnauzer named
Todd. I didnt name him Todd, he was a rescue dog, and I wasnt about to retrain the little
bastard to a new name. Nope, I just wanted a companion to greet me when I came home. He
waits for me if the window sometimes, either in the bedroom or the front window, and hes
always excited for me to come home. Other times hell be sleeping and Ill wake him up when I
enter, and then hell jump up on my leg.
