Personal Insight Questions

What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and

demonstrated that talent over time?

I believe my greatest talent/ skill is the ability to adapt to almost any situation that I have to

overcome, my whole life has been full of obstacles both physical and mental. Growing up in an

unbalanced environment taught me to deal with situations through rapid thinking and rational

evaluation. Where I live drugs and violence are extremely evident, and many situations arose that

required me to protect myself and trounce the possibility of injury or death. For example, a

shooting occurred in my neighbors house and I quickly got on the ground as the car zoomed

away leaving bullet holes around the house and a sense of both dread and relief. Even though I

was not harmed, I controlled the situation and made sure that my well-being was secure. This

constant perception that I acquired by living in this environment helps me identify my

surroundings and be able to adapt easier to certain situations which require quick responses.

Through years of constant conditioning I have nearly-perfected my skill and it helps me in

everyday situations, especially in school and in physical confrontations as well.

What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?

I believe that I have contributed a fair amount to my community to effectively make a difference.

One major example of my contribution to my community is my current participation in Grupo

San Juan Pablo II. In this group we help orphan children, deported immigrants, and currently in

nursing homes by delivering donations of food and clothing. We fundraise in our local church in

order to raise funds for our trips to Tijuana, Mxico where we deliver donations. Although the

constant donations to less fortunate peoples are not directly to people within my community, our

group effectively brought our community closer together in an effort to help others. I believe that

the community, especially the elders, has indeed become intact in order to make the effort to help

those who need assistance the most. In a big scale what our group has done might seem

somewhat insignificant but seeing the faces of those we help that really convinces me that what

we do really does make an impact.

Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to

overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?

The most significant challenge that I have ever faced that required me to take assertive efforts in

order to overcome it was when I moved to Victorville in 2009. I was in fourth grade at the time

and I sadly had to leave my whole life behind and start again. It was incredibly difficult to adjust

to my new community because it wasnt as ethnically diverse as my old community. I was used

to seeing all races mixed together and socializing with one another but in Victorville it seemed to

be split between the white social group and the black social group. Growing up in Baldwin Park

it was incredibly easy to communicate with other kids because we were mostly open minded, so

seeing this type of racism was quite shocking. I spent most of my time secluded from my peers.

The greatest challenge was my education; when I left Baldwin Park I was a top student, really
intelligent, and a well-rounded student. When I arrived at Victorville the students there were

advanced in almost every subject I was studying. I had difficulty with math because they were

ahead by a great amount. But this only make me want to push myself further. I spent the time I

had alone to study and try to catch up in order to be one of the best students. When I arrived

home I read even more and studied. It was an extremely difficult challenge and overcoming it

was one of my greatest success. I continued to be an excellent student for y remaining years in

Victorville and those skills transferred when I moved back home. I can absolutely credit my

suffering and achievement in Victorville to my continued academic achievement.

Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this

interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.

History has always inspired me due to the almost infinite knowledge that can be gained from

studying it. My interest in history has helped me further mainly in personal issues. For example,

when studying the lives of historical figures such as Franklin D. Roosevelt I learned the

difficulties and strenuous efforts that are necessary to undertake when helping others. This has

transitioned into my life when I help friends, family, and even strangers. History has also allowed

me to increase my knowledge of basic information. History also influenced me to consider

studying anthropology because I enjoy studying different cultures and their interactions within

the world. History also gives me a wider view of the world in a sense of seeing everything in a

constant cycle. People say that those who dont study history are doomed to repeat it, and thats

exactly what I see all around the world. In the world especially there are a lot of conflicts that
revolve around religion and political issues that seem to resonate those of earlier events. It

opened my eyes to the truths of the world, I understand what other dont because my increased

knowledge in history has allowed me to do so. Inside the classroom history has helped improve

my grades and further my studies in almost every subject. History truly inspired me and has had

a great impact in my future decisions.
