Reading over gay male personals, the richness and heterogeneity of the
sexual imagery is apparent. Many gay men display no hesitation in de-
scribing the sexual practices they favor or the physical characteristics they
find stimulating. The writers of these ads accept that they will be under-
stood and accepted by gay male readers.
The gay male personal advertisement descriptions are striking for sev-
eral reasons. They display a nuanced and complex language for conveying
specifics about sexual desire; gay men have ready access to an exception-
ally broad range of words to communicate with others about sex, a vocab-
ulary consisting of hundreds of words. The advertisements also reveal that
many gay men are comfortable with sexual fantasy; the parameters of
eroticization include everything from feet to uniforms. A sexual fantasy is
not something to be hidden, but something to be specified in advertise-
ments so that one can find another willing to play a role in it. As Richard
Mohr puts it, gay men are able to create through fantasy sexual persona
that, for example, combine the erotic excitement of soldiers, sailors, aces,
punks, lumberjacks, hardhats, roustabouts, truckers, carnies, and steve-
dores (Mohr, 1992:167). A gay man can bring together a pirates ear-
ring, a bikers tattoo, a gladiators cuff, a policemans cuffs, a cowboys
hankie, and engineers boots (Mohr, 1992:167) into a sexual fantasy that
subverts the authority of these roles due to their fantastical combination.
Through fantasy, gay men embrace their ability to recreate the boundaries

have something to learn about talking and fantasizing sex from the groups
that are marginalized by other lesbians. As Camille Roy writes, whether
butch or sadomasochism or extremes of genderwhat cant be represented
is the locale for invention and exchange (Roy, 1993:11). S/m practition-
ers, for example, are comfortable experimenting with sexual scenes as
well as building a language to discuss the specificity of their desires. As
Arlene Stein writes, s/m embodied sex as performance . . . providing an
endless supply of fantasy images, and a gendered archetype for the sort of
erotic tension required by the emerging model of lesbian sex (Stein,
1993:31). Butch/femme lesbians have also constructed language to cap-
ture their desiresnot only the terms butch and femme, but also
words such as stone and kiki. Butch/femme lesbians must also en-
gage with sexual fantasy in the process of determining what it means to be
butch or femme in bed on any given day. If lesbians wish to learn how to
talk and fantasize about sex, they can enter into a dialogue with those they
have pushed to the sexual margins, for those at the edges often see things
missed by others. As Minnie Bruce Pratt writes, As for whether fucking
makes a woman straight, I say that when two women do it, the act can get
considerably bent (Pratt, 1995:107). If we are to create a rich language
for sexuality, it is vital that we talk with each other in the lesbian commu-
nity since language needs to be able to communicate to others. It is not
sufficient to take a copy of JoAnn Loulans The Lesbian Erotic Dance
(1990) and retreat to the privacy of the bedroom, for the creation of a
shared language demands publicity.
Lesbians often look askance at gay male sexuality, viewing it as politi-
cally regressive rather than progressive, understanding it as embodying the
worst aspects of masculine sexuality. But this paper suggests that all les-
bians, not only those on the sexual periphery, have something to learn
from gay male representations of sexuality. As Arlene Stein writes, lesbian
sex renegades have already started exploring the sexual possibilities of
gay male culture: Drawing on the iconography of prefeminist lesbianism,
gay male culture, and heterosexual porn, this lesbian sexual fringe
introduced a new vocabulary of lesbian desire, a world of dildos and
harnesses, butch and femme, tops and bottoms, lust and intrigue (Stein,
1993:32). By exploring how gay men playfully combine and recombine
their sexual fantasies, creating words in the process to express their de-
sires, lesbians may discover that talking and thinking sex is a source of
personal energy, an arena that allows for individual self-creation and free-
dom. As Richard Mohr suggests, gay men discover through their sexual
fantasies how to work through their oppression, transforming and sub-
verting the status quo through envisioning things from a gay male perspec-
