November 2016

Edition
From The Secretarys Desk
Daniel Somerfield

Hello my friends,

The year is very quickly coming to an end and the crazy season will soon be
upon us. There are plenty of fun things organised in the next few months so try
to be involved as much as possible. It is never the same without you! Have a
look at the upcoming events and feel free to contact me for more information.
I can feel it is going to be a top summer with members boasting some great
catches and achievements of late. Feel free to share these with everyone as you
should be proud of what you have accomplished. Plus its always good to see
what everyone is doing.
Thanks to everyone for coming out to Sandy Hook for the Catty Challenge. It
was great to see to many families having some fun. I loved it. Whoever decided
that cheese was going to be a staple at every bbq needs to win a Nobel Peace
Prize. What a great idea!
I hope to catch up with you all in the next few months for some fun and a few
sneaky lemonades. Be careful on and off the water.

Love ya all!

Dan
Performing in your own backyard
Daniel Somerfield

I cannot express the satisfaction of exploring your local environment for new
adventure. Often the most satisfying days are spent locally. I would dearly love
to give you a brief account of the success I had in my own backyard.

First things first. Preparation is key. So much time is spent choosing the correct
blade for the job. It is often tempting to go with the largest blade possible but
often this can limit you capability to effective cover your target ground. It was
vital for me to choose a few outfits to use. Line class was quite heavy with
expectation high for coming into contact with heavy structure. Good abrasion
resistance was important for me to be able to execute with confidence. My goal
was to cover the zone well, running over every inch of area to ensure that I did
not miss a thing.

I like to think that maintaining my equipment well had led to a much more
enjoyable day. Lucky for me I had no failures and I believe the end results
speaks for itself.

Mowing the lawn is a fulfilling quest and one that provides endless satisfaction
for me. The challenge lies in keeping tight to structure to ensure the maximum
chance of success. The old saying goes for every foot away from the structure
you are, you decrease your chance by 50%. This can be a deceiving fact as in
my case, for every foot away from the structure I miss, increases the chance of
being shunned by the wife by 100%. Those arent great odds and let me tell
you, it is bloody hard to keep tight to the mulberry tree. Concentration is key
and avoiding all manner of obstacles is imperative to keeping your gear in good
nick and avoid having to pick up 300 pieces of tennis ball from all corners of
the yard.
I would like to give a shout out to the manufacturers of my gear. Rover have
always been a leading name in our industry and paired to a set of Bunnings
blades ensure a quality outfit. I have customised the setup by adding a small
knob to the throttle which was crucial when the throttle cable broke 10 years
ago. Makita make my second weapon and I would only trust 1.6mm twisted
monofilament on my edge trimmer. I implore you to do the same.
I hope you have taken a lot from this article. Stay tuned for next issue when I
give an exciting recap on cleaning the bath. It is never as hard as you think.

Peace and Love

Dan

Cattys Galore at Sandy Hook

Congratulations to all who participated in the Catch a Catty Comp which was enjoyed by
those who attended, even though the weather was hot. Thanks to the fellas who put up the
big Marque for our little members who enjoyed shade along with us older ones too.
Although there were a few skiers on the water we managed to fish the quieter waters in the
upper reaches and the river was clean with many snags and rock areas to try.

A lot a cattys were caught from small fry to large, however during our general meeting our
stocking committee along with our members have decided to use some of our allocated SIPs
money to purchase some Barramundi finglings and release into the Ben Anderson Barrage.
This has been allowed according to our new structured releasing of stock into our area. We
hope they will have time to grow before any flooding event or the evil cattys have a feed,
but this is nature. The Barra have a better growth rate then the bass also.
