Odyssey TImed Write 20/25

In Homers book Odyssey, the greek hero Odysseus encounters with

the Sirens at sea in book twelve. As everyone on the ship had beeswax in

their ears besides Odysseus. When they were passing by the Sirens they

sang a song to Odysseus trying to make him come over to them so they can

kill him. However, Odysseus made his men tie him to the mass so he

wouldnt want to jump off the ship and sure enough, he didn't move and he

survived. Margaret Atwood wrote a poem on the Sirens song. Both the song

they sing and the way they look uses a begging and sadness tone to help the

Sirens show that they are sad and just wanted only you to jump off of that

ship.

The song the Sirens sing helps them make people jumps off of their

ship to come to them based off of what they say and then magical tone of

their voice. Such as, in the book when the Sirens sing to Odysseus in a high

thrilling tone, Come closer, Famous Odysseus - Archaea's pride and glory-

moor your ship so you can hear our song! (Homer lines 14-15) This shows

that they song they make for everyone makes them feel special and

welcomed and that they desperately need them and want them to come.

Also, the magical tone that they were given automatically takes them in. To

summarize, the song the Sirens sing for a person makes them feel special

and that the sirens desperately want them causing them to want to jump off

of the ship.
The way the Sirens look also help get men to come to them as they

give off a desperate tone. For example, in the poem the Sirens say, Shall I

tell you the secret and if I do, will you get me out of this bird suit? (Atwood

lines 10-12) The Sirens painted imagery by saying bird suit because they are

represented as birds with the heads of women. This shows that the Sirens

are pleading for someone to get them out of that bird suit as if they can get

set free. The men then feel the need to help them causing them to go off of

the ship. In conclusion, men jump off the ships to go help the Sirens to help

them get rid of the bird suit that they are in.

The way the Sirens sing and look help them take men in a similar way.

Such as when the Sirens say to a man after they tell them they are stuck in a

bird suit and they dont enjoying signing with each other, This song is a cry

for help: Help me! Only you, only you can, you are unique. (Atwood lines 21-

24) This shows that their looks are helping they are saying the want to be

free from the bird body and they cant take it anymore. This also shows that

their voices and lyrics help by making the man feel special by saying the are

unique. The Sirens act desperate by sing help me as well. To summarize, the

way the Sirens sing and look make the men interested because of how sad

and desperate they seem.

However, the way the Sirens sing and look also help take the men a

little differently at times. For example, when the Sirens sing to Odysseus,

Never has any sailor passed our shores in his black craft until he has heard
the honeyed voices pouring from our lips. (Homer lines 16-18) This shows

that not all of the lyrics they sing is begging, sad, and painting an image of

what they look like. The lyrics were trying to persuade Odysseus by peer

pressure as saying that everyone else has done it. In conclusion, the Sirens

lyrics are not always sad and begging, like the way they use their look all the

time.

They way the Sirens look and what they sing help them take men off

bored. Both of them have a sad tone as they paint an image in a man's head

saying how they are trapped in this bird suit and they wanted to be free.

Their lyrics are also sad and begging as they say how they need help and

hate singing all the time and that the man is unique and only he can set

them free. However, the lyrics in theirs songs does not always have a sad

mournful tone. They also try to persuade men as they use peer pressure

saying that everyone has come to them or saying that you will be do happy

once you go to them. In the end, they way the Sirens look and how they sing

both help them into capturing men and making them jump off of their ship.
Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night Timed Write 36/35

The poem, Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night, by Dylan Thomas,

talks about him warning his father about the night. Dylan talks about the

people who were prepared, and the people who werent to go into the night.

He tries to convince his father to not go gentle in the night because he looks

out for his safety. The poem has a mournful mood to show that the speaker

wants his father to survive so, he tells him about the people that survived

the night and the people that didn't which will make him understand not to

go in gentle.

The speakers attitude in this poem is begging. For example, the

speaker says, And you, my father, there on the sad height,/Curse, bless, me

now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night.

(Thomas, lines 16-18) This shows that the speaker is almost begging his
father to not go out at night as he said he was praying. It also shows that he

cares about his father by telling him to not go into the night with your guard

down. This gives the poem a begging attitude as he wants to watch out for

his father. Many people have died in the night so the author is begging out of

sadness as he feels bad for what has happened to the others. In conclusion,

the speakers tone is sad and begging as he does not want his father to go

out into the night and get hurt.

The poem also has a fearful and mournful tone to it. Having a fearful

and mournful tone helps add to the part of begging and caring as being

mournful shows what danger is out there in the night and how sad it is to see

those poor men that went out die. For example, the speaker said Grave

men, near death, who see with blinding sight/Blind eyes could blaze like

meteors and be gay, (Thomas, lines 13-14) This demonstrates simile

because he is comparing blind eyes blazing to meteors blazing. This part of

the poem is not a metaphor because it is using the word like which makes it

a simile. These lines also help out the attitude of the poem because it shows

fear of the grave men whose eyes were blinded. The speaker is telling the

sad thing that has happened to these grave men. To summarize, the speaker

added a mournful tone to the poem about people who went gentle in the

night did not survive so the speaker could warn his father, as he wanted him

to survive the night.

Figurative language is used in the poem to helps demonstrate the

theme. Such as when he says, Though wise men at their end know dark is

right,/Because their words had forked no lightning they/Do not go gentle into

that good night. (Thomas, Lines 4-6) This part of the poem has a metaphor

as they compare saying words to forking lightning. This part of the poem also

shows the theme well because it shows how the wise men understood that

they could not just gently come into the night. Since they understood that,

they did not get killed. The theme describes how one must be armed and

ready to go into the night such as the wise men. If you are not, you will get

killed. Talking about the people that had got killed in the night adds a

mournful tone to the poem as well. In conclusion, figurative language helps

demonstrate the theme because the wise men that had words that did not

fork lighting realized they could not do gentle in the night do they survived.

The poem shows the speakers father how dangerous the night

is. You must be prepared to go into the night because if you are not you

wont survive. Such as them men that went into the night carelessly and

never came back out. The poem used figurative language such as similes

and metaphors to make the poem dramatic. Also, they used figurative

language to really emphasize the fact of how scary the night is and how you

must be tough with the night in order to survive. The speaker ends the poem

nicely in a begging tone, how he wishes his father will not go into the night

gentle based off of all that he has told him. People mourn for the others that

went gentle into the night but, now we know to not make the same mistake.
I Am Malala Essay 47/50

There comes a time in everyones life where we must decide to either

stay true to what we believe in, or change who we are to survive. May it be

life threatening or not, everyone at some point of their life has had this

moment. One example would be a Womens Rights Activist, Malala Yousafzai.

She decided to stay true to her beliefs and even advocate for them,

regardless of the danger she faced from her opposition, the Taliban. Her

advocacy resulted in her getting shot in the face by the Taliban, luckily

though, she survived and went on to become an international symbol for

Womens Rights and Education Rights. In her book I am Malala, she tells us

her story, her experiences, and how getting shot by the Taliban changed her

life. Most importantly, though, she goes in depth about her message of how

women should stand up for what they believe in and that they do not

deserve to be silenced.

To start off, Malala is a womens right activist who had a difficult life,

yet continues pushing for womens rights, which makes her story so

amazing. After making blog posts for a while, protesting against the Taliban,

Malalas life completely changes when they came onto her school bus one

day, saying Who is Malala? he demanded. No one said anything, but

several of the girls looked at me. I was the only girl with my face not
covered. Thats when he lifted up a black pistol, (Yousafzai pg.9). Malala got

shot in the face that day. Thankfully she survived and goes on to help

improve womens rights. This shows that Malala is not afraid to stand up for

women as she posts blogs of her life with a false name to be safe. Her life of

having a limited education, standing up for womens rights, and getting shot

all show why she is a true hero. Malala wrote her life story to show how a

normal girl can make a huge impact in someones life and that the struggle

in doing so is worth it. This encourages young girls to stop waiting in the

sidelines and actually make a difference in the world.

In addition, throughout Malalas life as a young girl, she has dealt with

being told that women should stop wasting their time at school so they can

dedicate their lives to their husbands, do housework, and care for their

children. An example of how Malala stands up for her rights says, We talked

about how things happen for different reasons, this happened to me, and

how education for females not just males is one of our Islamic rights. I was

speaking up for my rights as a Muslim woman to be able to go to

school.(Yousafzai, Pg 141). Although Malala is one of the only people to

stand up for the women in her community, she believes that one voice can

make the biggest difference. She decides to continue attending school to

protest against the Taliban because she strives for equality and freedom. She

does not want to sit around at home and obey the Taliban when she could be

out there helping women, including herself, gain their rights and respect.

This is another instance that encourages women and young girls to stand up
and fight for what you believe is right. Therefore, Malala shows others that

they should speak up for change to make things right, or else nothing will

happen.

Lastly, Malalas story is not only important to her culture and

community, it is just as necessary throughout America, as well. Malala talks

about how women need to be treated as equally as men and that freedom

should be given to all in the quote it says, There should be no discrimination

against languages people speak, skin color, or religion. No matter who you

are, where you are from, what you believe in, and who you love, you deserve

to have the same rights as everyone else. This goes for everyone throughout

the world. We may not be struggling with such common issues as being

bombed for our education, under age marriage, or hiding ourselves, but

sexistism is still a common problem we have. Everyone struggles with large

difficulties but we need to stand up for those rights. Although they are not

the same intensity, our problems are both needed to have solutions. We

shouldnt disregard our issues because they may be smaller. Women here in

America may not have it as hard as it is in Pakistan, but we still have cruelty

and disregard for women. As long as that is still here we have to fight for it to

be solved. On top of that issue it is still important to learn about problems

that may not affect us. We have to show concern and educate ourselves on

these large issues. All in all, Malalas novel is so important for understanding

the world around us as well as our global problems

To conclude, the ideas that women should not be silenced in any way

and for them to stand up for themselves has been explored throughout

Malalas memoir. Malala went from an ordinary citizen of Swat, Pakistan, to

being a blogger about womens rights in her community that led up to the

time she got shot by the Taliban and beyond. She stood up for her rights as

well as womens rights regarding the Talibans bias in favor of making

womens rights much less than mens rights. Malalas memoir is not just

important for her country, but for other countries with sexism. You can

contribute to womens rights by not criticising feminism openly. To see if

other countries have a similar problem with sexism across the globe,

research and find how common sexism really is on countries other than

Pakistan, Malalas home country.
