Foreword
The Great Music in Irish Houses Festival once again offers a stimulating range of
chamber music from Beethoven to Berg and Mozart to Philip Glass, performed by
leading Irish and international artists.
Starting on June 13th, we return to Casino in Marino, where renowned French cellist
Marc Coppey presents a recital of solo cello works. This miniature architectural gem has
limited seating and tickets are sure to sell quickly.
Over the years various historic Irish buildings have hosted intimate chamber music
recitals, and we have returned frequently to many. But it is a pleasure to introduce new
and interesting venues. This year the Royal Irish Academy, founded in 1785 to promote
awareness of the benefits of science and the humanities on society, is one such. In this
case, music is the beneficiary, and we are grateful to the RIA for their collaboration. The
links between science and music was well expressed by Albert Einstein who said I
often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. The concert on June 14th with
violist Antoine Tamestit and pianist Cdric Tiberghien may provide an opportunity to
indulge your own daydreams in this beautiful mid-nineteenth century building on
Dawson Street.
On June 15th we will pay our annual visit to one of the Festivals favourite venues,
Killruddery House, where the exotic scent in the Orangery will blend with the beautiful
sounds of a piano and a wind quartet featuring some of Irelands most highly regarded
woodwind performers.
We are delighted to be invited back by the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin a
verdant and colourful setting for the concert featuring the Heath Quartet, one of the
UKs most dynamic string quartets on June 16th.
In recent years the juxtaposition of old and new has been an exciting addition to the
Festival, and, on Saturday, June 17th, a visit to the international hub office of Airbnb on
Hanover Quay demonstrates the Festivals interest in the unconventional. One of the
last remaining warehouse buildings in the Docklands, it was previously home to Dublin
Ice & Cold Storage with allegedly Irelands first fridge. It has been faithfully restored and
renovated by renowned Dublin architects Heneghan Peng. The buildings central atrium
amphitheater will host the popular Saturday morning Coffee Concert.
Kildare Street is home to Dil ireann, scene of many fractious debates. But we can
guarantee harmony on the evening of June 17th in its near neighbour at No 6 Kildare
Street, the Royal College of Physicians Ireland, with a septet of musicians, including the
internationally celebrated clarinettist Michael Collins. We are indebted to the College for
once again providing this splendid venue.
Musical Milestones is the theme of the 2017 festival-in-the festival as we salute the
significant input and influence of the legendary Veronica (Ronnie) Dunne on her 90th
birthday, the ubiquitous (youthful) Finghin Collins on his 40th and the Carducci Quartet
on 20 years of their musical partnership. We renew our long-term partnership with the
Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane with a free admission concert in their Sundays @
Noon series on June 18th. Arrive early to avoid disappointment. The 3pm and 7pm
concerts take place in the Coach House, Dublin Castle. Built in 1833 to house the
Viceroys coach and horses, we are delighted that, through the good offices and
generosity of the OPW, we are able to present these two concerts here featuring a
number of musical guests.
As always we are grateful to the owners and custodians of all these buildings for their
permission and their support.
Ticketing this year will be handled by Eventbrite.ie and full details of how and where to
book can be found elsewhere in this brochure. I urge you to book early to avoid
disappointment.
I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Arts Council and the Department
of Arts, Heritage , Rural, Regional and Gaeltacht Affairs, and Dublin City Council, for
their financial assistance, to our individual concert sponsors Cairn Homes, our media
partner RT lyric fm, the Embassy of France, and to our Friends, whose support is
gratifying and necessary to the continuation of this long-running Festival.
May the sun shine on the Festival this June and I hope that you will all enjoy the
selection of performers, venues and, of course, the music.

Introduction
For almost half a century great music and great buildings have been at the heart of
the Great Music in Irish Houses Festival. The Festivals mission has been to bring
audiences to interesting and non-traditional concert venues to experience
performances by some of the worlds greatest exponents of the chamber music
repertoire. In 2017, this unique event will once again offer audiences the possibility
to hear exceptional musicians from home and abroad in a variety of intimate, iconic
and surprising concert venues.
In recent seasons, the Festival has proudly presented the Irish dbuts of such
distinguished French musicians as pianist Nicolas Angelich, violinist Renaud
Capuon, cellist Gautier Capuon and the Quatuor Ebne. In 2017 it welcomes
another exceptional French artist to Ireland for the first time, violist Antoine
Tamestit, who will collaborate in recital with pianist Cdric Tiberghien, performing
at the Festival for the first time on our first visit to the Royal Irish Academy (June
14th). Another distinguished French artist, cellist, Marc Coppey, opens our 2017
season with an all-Bach programme at the extraordinary Casino in Marino (June
13th).
On June 15th, Festival favourite, Killruddery House, hosts another Irish dbut, that
of horn player, Alec Frank-Gemmill, described by the Financial Times as a
phenomenon with a tone of golden purity, wrap-around warmth and ecstatic
afterglow. He is joined on the platform by distinguished musicians, Matthew
Manning, Macdara Seireadin, Peter Whelan and Cdric Tiberghien for an enticing
programme of music by Mozart and Beethoven.
Following their extraordinary collaboration with Olwen Fouer on the pairing of
TS Eliots literary masterpiece Four Quartets and Beethovens gargantuan String
Quartet Op 132 at the 2014 event, the British Heath Quartet, returns for two
concerts. In addition to an evening performance of works by quartet stalwarts
Haydn, Beethoven and Mendelssohn at the National Botanic Gardens (June 16th),
the Heaths will join forces with the celebrated Irish pianist, Hugh Tinney for a coffee
morning concert in the fascinating surroundings of Airbnb International Hub,
Hanover Quay (June 17th) where they will perform works by Shostakovich and
Bartk.
The Festival welcomes the return of Michael Collins, who holds a special place in the
hearts of Irish audiences, for a performance at No 6 Kildare Street on June 17th. On
this occasion he partners with the award-winning Carducci Quartet for one
of the chamber music greats, Mozarts heavenly Clarinet Quintet, and performs
Beethovens Septet with the Quartet and outstanding musical colleagues,
Alec-Frank-Gemmill, Peter Whelan and Dominic Dudley.
Our 2017 Dublin Musical Saunter (June 18th) celebrates the combined 150th birthday
of a number of musical luminaries Veronica Dunne (90), Finghin Collins (40), and
the Anglo-Irish Carducci Quartet who have been together for 20 years. Our
afternoon concert, featuring Finghin Collins and the Carducci Quartet in music by
Schumann and Dvork, highlights the musical prowess of the younger generation,
v
whilst the Saunter is bookended with two concerts dedicated to the indefatigable
Dr Veronica Dunne. A woman of exceptional vision, possessing an innate ear for
great talent, Ronnie has moulded and nurtured the careers of countless young
singers for almost 60 years. The Festival is proud to mark this milestone year by
presenting a number of singers from her musical stable, including the outstanding
mezzo-soprano Patricia Bardon.
I hope many of you will take the opportunity to enjoy the feast of music and
musicians in a wide variety of interesting settings during our 2017 event.

Musical Milestones
The Festivals Dublin Musical Saunter honours two Dublin musical

From noon to night, music lovers will have an opportunity to salute these
two distinguished artists who have made, and continue to make, an
indelible mark on the Irish musical landscape. Adding richness to the
