AddressingtheProblem

Intheearly1990sVDOTacknowledgedthedifficultyofmaintainingexpansionjointsandbeganto
experimentwiththeconceptofeliminatingthejointsentirely.VDOTbegantoplaceclosurepoursin
thelocationsofexistingjoints,essentiallyeliminatingthejointentirely.Theseclosurepourswere
initiallyplacedoverpiersupportsandcalledlinkslabs.Later,VDOTbegantoinstallclosurepours
calleddeckextensionsattheendsofbridgesovertheabutments.Sincethattimewehave
successfullyeliminatedover700jointsonmorethan300bridges.Figures4and5providetypical
