ABSTRACT

The Relationship between Protein Intake and Academic Achievement of Students


in Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri
BACKGROUND
As the future leader for a better country, Indonesian students should be prepared
to be able to reach an optimal academic achievement. Academic achievement is
the learning result that is achieved by students from the teaching and learning
process or activity at school and evaluated by tests. Protein is a nutrient which is
responsible to form new cells in body including neurons in brain. Protein is
needed to form neurotransmitter and affect human behavior such as emotion, self-
control, and concentration. This study is conducted to determine the relationship
between protein intake and academic achievement of students in Madrasah
Tsanawiyah Negeri.

Method
This study was conducted on December 2016 in Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 3
Pondok Pinang Jakarta Selatan using cross-sectional design. A total of 199
students as the data was collected by propotional simple random sampling. The
protein intake data was taken from Semi Quantitatife Food Frequency
Questionnaire, while academic achievement data was taken from student report
card.Statistical analysis using Chi -square test with significance of p < 0.05.

RESULT
Of students with 54,4% insufficient protein intake got in average score, while
45,5% got under average scores. The group with 56,5% sufficient protein intake
had average scores and 43,5% got under average scores. That there was no
correlation between students protein intake and students academic achievement.
(p = 0,862)
CONCLUSION
There a no correlation between students protein intake and students academic
achievement.
