because the pool of employees is significantly smaller. Regardless of how
well you do the job, youll be out the door if you have one or two accidents,
because the EMR ratio goes up faster proportionately.
The stakes have always been high when it comes to safety, but safety
equipment hasnt always adequately protected those whose work puts them
in harms way. Newer technology is rising to the challenge, however, and
workers today have more options for comfortable and effective protective
equipment.
There is never an acceptable excuse to enter a sewer without a proper
gas monitor, or to enter a confined space unattended or without the required
gear. Earlier this year, those exact mistakes cost three Florida utility workers
their lives.
As reported by local news outlets, when crew members noticed a
section of a paved street wasnt settling properly, one of the workers removed
a manhole cover and climbed down to investigate. When workers on the
surface lost contact with the first man, another went down to rescue him.
Then another.
All three died from exposure to hydrogen sulfide and methane gas. None
of them wore masks, confined-space gear or the air packs that could have
saved their lives.
New gear is getting easier to wear and more effective at protecting
workers. This months Safety First column outlines some new wearable
technology that can protect from a host of dangers. The gear is good, but its
only effective if you actually wear it.
You need to do whatever you can to protect yourself and your workers on
the job. I hope youll take that to heart.
Enjoy this months issue. C

Knowledge is power the better they understand your company, the better
they will be able to provide proper coverage.

HOW CAN I LOWER THE COST?

As with any insurance, if you want lower premiums, raise your deductibles,
Alvarez says.
But dont just cut coverage to save money. Insurance is all about gaps,
says Senderovich and reducing coverage makes gaps bigger: Whats the
purpose of paying for insurance if it doesnt cover you for anything anyway?
Are you offered coverage at bargain rates? Read the fine print. A cut-rate
price usually means a cut-rate policy, says Senderovich one that limits
coverage in ways that youll regret. (Imagine youre a plumber with a liability
policy that excludes water damage.) If the price is too good to be true, youre
probably not covered.
Think long-term instead: Keep your records clean and up to date. Focus
on preventing losses: For workers comp, that means making sure employees
have protective equipment and safety training and use them. Keep vehicles
properly maintained and serviced, and when it comes time to buy a new truck,
consider the long-term cost of insuring it and operating it, Senderovich says
not just the purchase price.
Look for a carrier that will give you a discount if you bundle several lines
under one provider. And never, ever let your coverage lapse: Autopay is your
friend.
You can save money by shopping around, and as Senderovich says, your
broker should compare prices for you at renewal time.
At the same time, says Alvarez, see if your current carrier rewards customer
loyalty with discounts after three or more years of continuous coverage. Business
owners who switch carriers chasing cheaper premiums may miss out on long-
term savings, she says.

WHAT MISTAKES SHOULD I AVOID?

Dont assume general liability will cover everything, says Alvarez. And
dont get confused about medical pay in your general liability policy. That
doesnt cover your employees injuries just the medical bills of customers or
others who arent affiliated with your business, if they sue you for a problem.
Shop on quality, not price, Senderovich advises: Cheap is usually
dangerous. And go with an agent who knows your kind of business. However
good the agent who has your homeowners or personal auto policy is, if they
dont specialize in your trade, they may not know all the risks associated with
your business.

IS THERE SUCH A THING AS TOO MUCH INSURANCE?

Thats pretty uncommon, says Senderovich. If you think youre paying too
much, talk to your agent.
The real risk, Alvarez says, is to have too much in one policy and not
enough in others. Its the not enough you need to pay attention to. A $1
million liability policy might seem like a lot, but it wont cover car accidents or
worker injuries, she says. No matter how much general liability coverage you
buy, it wont cover that.
Your best bet, both Alvarez and Senderovich say: Find an agent who
knows your business, then sit down and work through what coverage you need.
In the end, insurance may seem like a gamble, but compared to the
alternative, its the safest bet you can make. C

Offering an array of services has benefited the company. Baron points out
that if customers like the service you provide and ask you to do something
else for them, theyll go somewhere else if you dont provide that service. In
addition, the work Pro Serve performs in the companys two primary customer
bases pipelines and refineries peaks at different times of the year. These
offsetting cycles provide the company with steadier work and more consistent
cash flow.
Pipeline work occurs mostly in warmer months, while refineries schedule
their major turnarounds (scheduled maintenance shutdowns) in winter because
its too hot in summer to do that kind of work, Baron explains. So its lucky for
us that they dont compete with each other.
On the flip side, Baron only expands into services that fall within the
companys realm of expertise, which affords it better quality control. You can
only go so far, he notes. Weve been asked to get into other service lines, but
we just cant be everything to everybody. Weve stuck primarily with air moving
and spinoffs in that base market, like hydroexcavating and hydroblasting.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
Since its inception, Pro Serve has amassed a large fleet of equipment.
The company owns 14 vacuum trucks and 13 of them are equipped with
hydroexcavating packages to maximize utility. The fleet includes 10 GapVax
units and four Guzzlers made by Vactor Manufacturing. The trucks feature 10-
to 16-cubic-yard debris tanks, 800- to 1,000-gallon water tanks, water pumps
manufactured by Cat and Giant (1,500 to 2,500 psi at 5 to 20 gpm) and Hibon
blowers (2,000 to 5,800 cfm). Theyre used mostly at chemical plants and to do

TOUGH JOB REQUIRED A DEFT HYDROEXCAVATING TOUCH

The hydroexcavating division at Pro Serve in Prairieville, Louisiana, mostly exposes underground lines and other infrastructure for pipeline companies.
But that doesnt mean it cant handle jobs in other fields, as evidenced by an unusual project the company tackled in 2010.
The problem: failing drainlines under four roughly 300-foot-long, 90-foot-wide barracks at a U.S. Air Force base in San Antonio. Toilets and drains in
the showers were falling out the bottom of each building, says Ronnie Barron, the companys founder and owner.
The task at hand: hydroexcavate channels under each drainline; each building had nine or 10 drainlines, running across the width of the structures. But to
make it really interesting, each channel required walls angled at 45 degrees, to protect workers both Pro Serve hydroexcavators and contractors replacing
the lines if the walls happened to collapse.
To understand the scope of the challenge, envision an 8-foot-deep channel shaped like a V, with the arms of the V sloped at 45-degree angles. The
bottom of the channel was about 5 feet wide and the top was roughly 30 feet wide. And if that wasnt daunting enough, the closest Pro Serve could get its
vacuum trucks was about 85 feet from the barracks.
One contractor had already failed to get the job done, which is why Pro Serve got the call. And when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which had
jurisdiction over the project, mandated 45-degree walls, that meant exactly 45 degrees, not 40 or 50, Baron points out.
They checked the angle about every 10 feet, he says, noting there was no margin for error. And cutting an exact 45-degree angle in dirt for 90 feet
is not easy. It takes a real deft touch to hydroexcavate at an angle. I think were one of the few companies in the region with the expertise to do that. Were
blessed with some really great operators.
The project took several months to complete and required four vacuum/hydroexcavators and about 15 employees. It was a tough job, Baron notes.
But we got it done.

co-owner of Superior Environmental Solutions (SES) in Cincinnati. Within WEBSITE: www.superiorenvironmentalsolutions.com
the last couple years, the company has invested in six 335DHW hot-water COST: About $50,000 each
jetting washers heavy-duty units from NLB Corp. that reliably operate
under demanding conditions.
We needed a dependable pressure
washer that could hold up to the rigors of how
we use them, says Yeager, whose company
offers a range of services that includes
industrial vacuuming, pressure washing and
hydroblasting. During roughing outages
(maintenance shutdowns), these units go in
and run for up to 72 hours nonstop without
breaking down. These machines fire up, run
and do the job theyre meant to do.
SES used to buy smaller pressure washers
that cost about $4,000, plus another $4,000
for a trailer on which to mount them. That
would appear to be relatively inexpensive
compared to about $50,000 apiece for the
NLB machines. But the smaller machines
rarely lasted more than a year, while Yeager
says he expects to get 15 to 20 years of use
out of the NLB units.
Sure, theyre more expensive up-front,
Yeager says. But when you factor in the
constant repurchasing and the downtime, the
cost is negligible. Plus, its hard to put a price
on an unhappy customer.

The heavy-duty 335DHW hot-water jetting washers

from NLB feature an unloader valve that maintains
a constant supply of freshwater to the pump, which
keeps water temperatures constant to reduce pump
wear. Superior Environmental Solutions of Cincinnati
uses the units for large industrial cleaning jobs.

32 Cleaner June 2017

Yeager says SES officials worked with NLB to develop a large pressure reliable, SES can confidently tackle large jobs, like cleaning out a 1-million-
washer that was more like a hydroblaster, but capable of hot-water jetting and gallon industrial tank. You go into a tank that size and youre going for a
low-pressure, high-volume industrial cleaning. The result was the 335DHW, couple weeks straight, he says. But these machines get the job done. C
featuring a 66 hp Kubota diesel engine, a 50-gallon water tank, a triplex
water pump (3,500 psi at 15 gpm) and a 700,000 Btu
burner unit.
The 335s also feature an unloader valve that
maintains a constant supply of freshwater to the
pump, which keeps water temperatures constant.
Thats a big improvement from the smaller pressure
washers SES used before. They recirculated the water,
which got hotter and hotter as it was used, leading to
pump wear.
Yeager also praises the units capability to run
multiple spray guns simultaneously. It maintains
3,500 psi at 15 gpm, crews can run three 5 gpm
guns or two 7 gpm guns at one time, which increases
productivity. It doesnt triple production, but it at
least doubles it, he says. We can clean plant floors
much more quickly.
At the same time, the 335s are more like hydro-
blasters because they can bust through difficult-to-
remove material like tallow in meat-processing plants.
Debris builds up in the bottom of tanks and becomes
almost solid over time. But the 335s power through it,
thanks to the high pressure and hot-water capability.
Its like a giant fist that just beats on it, Yeager
says. We also use these machines to lance out lines
in tallow plants. The hot water just melts the tallow
right out of there and the water flow pushes it out.
The 335s even get used as small hydroexcavating
units in locations where large hydroexcavating trucks
wont fit, he adds.
Yeager says the units dependability stems from
their simple but sound engineering. That simplicity
also makes it easy to train operators and maintain the
units, he says.
The machines also help SES bid more competi-
tively, thanks to the multi-gun capability. While other
companies need, say, three pickup trucks to tow three
power washers, SES can offer the same capabilities
with just one truck. It just makes things run a little
smoother, Yeager says. And it never hurts to have
some flexibility out there. If you plan on using just
one gun, it never fails that a customer asks you to do
another job while youre there that requires two guns.
And if you only have one gun, you have to wait to get
another pressure washer from the shop. But we just
plug in another gun and go.
In the end, Yeager says the 335s most valu-
able attribute is their durability. Because theyre so

But even with more than 600 employees, seven strategically located

company has managed to maintain a down-home culture. Were the largest

We emphasize open collaboration, he continues. We have a vast
amount of resources, but unless you tap into them and communicate with the
people next to you, you dont receive the benefits. We also dont micromanage
employees. Instead, we recognize the value of their skill sets and give them
the ability to go out on their own and succeed.

STARTING SMALL
Plumbing and drain cleaning wasnt initially a big part of the company.
By 1997, 30 years after the companys inception, Therma Corp. employed
just two plumbers dedicated to service. But in 1998, the company hired three
more plumbers and officially formed a service department. The initial focus
was servicing backflow preventers, but as customers needs for line cleaning
and inspections increased, the department followed the Parisi philosophy
and expanded accordingly, adding more personnel and equipment.

It services companies ranging from semiconductor

and computer manufacturers to research-and-

offer the department an opportunity to follow the
companys overall strategy on a micro level: partner
with potentially high-growth companies and grow
with them. The company also does work for non-
tech clients, including universities, industrial
and commercial facilities, and food and beverage
companies.
To serve those customers, the department relies
on a Vac-Con combination sewer/hydroexcavation
truck, a pipeline inspection truck built on a Ford
F-450 chassis with an Envirosight Rovver X robotic
crawler camera (the truck was built out by Haaker
Equipment Co.), and eight trailer-mounted water jet-
ters made by Spartan Tool (3,000 psi at 12 gpm).
The department depends on a 2016 Ford F-650
dump truck with 7-cubic-yard dump body manufac-
tured by Scelzi Enterprises; a mini-excavator and a
front-loader, both made by Bobcat; two 2015 F-450
utility trucks with bodies made by Scelzi; and 12
service vans, each equipped with full complement of
RIDGID ProPress tools, a RIDGID SeeSnake pipeline
inspection camera and a portable drain cleaning ma-
chine made by Spartan Tool.

HIGH-PRESSURE JOBS
Therma Corp. works with a lot of companies
that require clean rooms, which are sealed
manufacturing areas that must be kept completely
free of contaminants such as air-borne microbes,
dust, chemical vapors and so forth. These rooms rely
on tightly controlled pressurization, temperature and
humidity levels and specialized filtration systems to
eliminate entry of even submicron particles.
As such, its financially disastrous when a stop-
page causes a waste line to back up into a manufac-
turing area, for example. When that happens, the
manufacturing process stops and all the products
may need to be destroyed. If a semiconductor or
pharmaceutical production line goes down, for in-
stance, it could result in millions if not tens of mil-
lions of dollars in lost product, Fisher explains.
So these customers require an exceptionally high
level of service. Thats why we have seven strategi-
cally located remote facilities; they allow us to pro-
vide better response times. In our markets, getting
to a customer in one hour instead of, say, two hours,
is huge. If we get there within an hour, we often can
help prevent product loss.
While the pressure is on during such
emergencies, these jobs also carry high upside, he

EXPOSING BROKEN WASTE LINES
TOOK WORKERS DOWN UNDER
Therma Corp.s plumbing services division has
built a reputation for developing innovative solutions
to problems experienced by high-tech Silicon Valley
corporations. Recent jobs that involved confined-space
entry under concrete slabs of large buildings offer a good
case in point.
The problem: Silty soil underneath the buildings self-
supporting slabs is settling and damaging buildings
waste lines in the process. All the waste lines are
suspended with rods and hangers under the slab and
surrounded by pea gravel (backfill), explains Mike Fisher,
the companys chief operating officer.
But as the silt infiltrates the pea gravel, it locks up
the gravel and sticks to the pipes, he continues. So
instead of falling away as the ground settles, the pea
gravel pulls the waste lines apart and the fill material gets
into the lines.
Under normal circumstances, workers would locate
the line break, saw through the slab from inside the
building, excavate the area and make the repair. But thats
not possible in the sensitive clean room environments
at these corporations. So weve gotten pretty good at
hydroexcavating tunnels under the buildings, Fisher The Therma Corp team includes (from left) plumbing technician Guadalupe Pattison, safety

Get More Out

of Your Jetter
Understanding how nozzles work will help
you clean more efficiently and effectively
By Jim Aanderud

W
aterjetting can solve a lot of problems, but simply
owning one doesnt solve anything if you dont
know how to properly use it.
Understanding nozzles and how they work
is a key step to getting the most out of your jetter. Knowing the
proper use of each nozzle will ensure that you always select the
right one for each job.
There should be no guessing when selecting a nozzle for
cleaning operations. Nozzles are designed for specific cleaning
applications. If they are not used for their intended purposes,
then they wont be as effective.
In order to understand nozzles, contractors must first
understand the relationship between pressure and flow ratio. In
general drain cleaning and debris removal, you want low pressure
and high flow. As debris accumulates, you want sufficient flow to
move the material down the line.
As you move into harder material such as encrustation,
mortar, or even solidified grease, you want to operate at a higher
pressure and lower flow to dislodge the material.
Keep in mind that a single nozzle is seldom sufficient. You There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all jetting nozzle. Pressure, flow, jet trajectory, and pipe
condition are all critical factors in selecting the right nozzle for a job.
need to change nozzles as conditions change. For example, once
encrustation and mortar is removed from the pipe wall, you
need to switch to a nozzle that can move the material to the
downstream manhole to be vacuumed out. the 15 to 20 degree range can clean the pipe wall, propel the nozzle and move
Many cleaning operators have a favorite nozzle they use in a variety of debris, but using two nozzles for each job would be more efficient.
conditions. Just because it cleans well in one situation, they assume that it will Many of todays nozzles incorporate a combination of jet angles to
work in every other situation, but that is certainly not the case. perform multiple functions simultaneously. They can clean the pipe wall and
move debris while providing the thrust necessary to perform these tasks.
CLEANING STRATEGIES When selecting a nozzle, consider the type of cleaning you will be doing.
Jet trajectory is critical to nozzle selection. Jet angles in the 30 to 45 degree Are you clearing blockages, removing heavy sediment, cleaning the radiuses
range are ideal for cleaning pipe walls. However, they provide minimal thrust of the pipe walls, removing grease or roots, or eliminating tuberculation and
and are unable to move the debris down the line. Jet angles in the 0 to 10 mineral deposits? Each of these requires a different type of nozzle:
degree range are primarily designed for thrust to propel a nozzle up the line. Breaking blockages: Penetrating nozzles have a single function: shoot
Most penetrators will have jet angles in this range because they are designed to up a line and break through a blockage. Their low-degree jet pattern delivers

blockage. These angles are also the most efficient for moving debris. A jet in penetrators also have forward jets, which increase penetrating effectiveness.

54 Cleaner June 2017

Cleaning debris: Nozzles that move debris down the line also have a
low-degree jet pattern. Some of these nozzles will incorporate multiple angles,
but their primary function is to move heavy sediment as efficiently as possible
down the line so the material can be vacuumed up.
Radius cleaning: Radius cleaning is required when there are bends in
the pipe. Many nozzles tend to leave debris along the inside of the radius.
Effective cleaning under these conditions requires a nozzle with 45-degree
jets to knock debris off of the pipe wall. This process must be followed with a
10-degree nozzle to move the debris out of the pipe.
Grease cleaning: There are various nozzle types that work effectively
for cutting through and removing grease from a pipeline. Spinning nozzles
are the best option for these jobs. Most spinning nozzles incorporate 30- to
75-degree jets for cutting and 10- to 20-degree jets for thrust. Chain flails also
work well to knock the grease from the pipe wall. After a chain flail has been
used, a cleaning nozzle is needed to move the grease down the line.
Light to medium roots: Slow rotational spinning nozzles work well with
light to medium roots. Older rotating nozzles tended to spin too fast and
didnt work as effectively as the slow-spinning nozzles available today.
Heavy roots: Chain flails and root saws are the most effective tools
when dealing with heavy roots. If possible, a camera should be used in
conjunction with these mechanical nozzles in order to ensure that the pipe
is not being damaged.

NOZZLE CATEGORIES
Nozzles are broken down into three tiers based on efficiency for moving
water. Tier one nozzles have orifices drilled out in different locations and
sizes, and at different angles, which can mean inefficient flow dynamics and
less performance. When the water enters the nozzle, it hits into the back of
its interior, then bounces out in the opposite direction while exiting through
the drilled holes. During this process, a considerable amount of energy is lost.
These nozzles are relatively inexpensive and dont last as long. Over time, the
drilled jet holes wear out and the nozzle becomes ineffective.
Tier two nozzles are more expensive, but have better flow dynamics than
tier one nozzles. They have replaceable inserts that also straighten the jet
streams as they exit the nozzle. When the jet orifices wear out, these nozzles
can be restored to their full operating capacity by replacing the inserts.
Tier three nozzles are designed to maximize the efficiency of water flow.
Flow dynamics are designed to significantly increase the water pressure
exiting the jets. Under certain conditions, these nozzles can increase cleaning
efficiency. Their only downside is the fact that they can be very costly.
However, the cost is usually offset by increased efficiency.
Nozzle design has made huge strides in the past few years. By
understanding how nozzles work and staying informed of available technology,
youll be able to clean lines more efficiently and effectively. C
