1. PRELIMINARY:

P1. Given that RL=100, R2=1k and Vcc=12V for the circuit of Fig3.77.
a) Calculate the value of R1 so that the maximum output voltage swing can occur.
Also calculate the DC power consumed on each resistor.

ICQ=Vcc/2RL=12V/(2*100)=60mA

IBQ=ICQ/=60mA/120=0.5mA

IR2=VBE/R2=0.65V/1k=0.65mA

IR1=IR2+IB=0.65mA+0.5mA=1.15mA

Vcc-IR1R1-VBE=0 R1=(Vcc-VBE)/IR1=(12-0.65)/1.15mA=9.87k

b) Calculate Av=Vo/Vi

hie=26mV/IBQ
hie=26mV/0.5mA=52

Av=Vo/Vi=-hfeRL/hie=-120*100/52=-230.8

c) Calculate Ps,PLdc and the maximum value of PD if no input signal is present.

Ps=VccICQ=12V*60mA=0.72W

PLdc= ICQ2RL=60mA2*1k=0.36W

PD=Ps-PLdc=0.72-0.36=0.36W

d) Calculate the PL and PD when Vi=20sinwt mV. Hint: Use the result of P1b to find
Icm.

Av=Vo/Vi=-hfeRL/hie=-120*100/52=-230.8

Vo=Av*Vi=230.8*20*10-3=4.82Vpeak

PL= ICQ2RL/2 ICQ=Vpeak/RL

PL=Vo2/2RL=4.822/(2*100)=0.1087W

PD=Ps-PL-PLdc= 0.72-0.36-0.1087=0.2517W
P2. Given that Vcc=6V for the circuit given in Fig3.78.
a) Calculate the minimum value of RL such that the peak collector current is less than
55mA (take VCesat=0)

2
Icmax=55mA VCEsat=0 RLmin=?

Icmax=(Vcc-VCesat)/(Rdc+Rac)=Vcc/10+RL <<55mA where Rdc=0

Vcc/10+RL<<55mA

6V/(10+RL)<<55mARL=100

b) Assuming that Vi=2sinwt V, draw the input and output voltage waveforms on the
same scale.

Vi=2sinwt V

Vo=Vi*(RL/(Rac+Rdc))=2sinwt(100/110)=1.82sinwtV

3
P3. Calculate the value of R to give a standby collector current of 12mA for the ciecuit given
in Fig 3.79. Also calculate VCEQ for each transistor.

2R1IR1-2VBE-2REIE=0

IE1=IE2=Ic(+1)/=12.1mA

VBE=VB-VE VB=0.65+0.121=0.771V

IR2=(Vcc-VB)/R2=237.7A

IB=Ic/=100A

IR=IR2+IB=137.7A

R=0.771V/137.7A=5.59k

VCEQ1=VCEQ2=Vcc-VE=6V-0.121V=5.879V

2. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE:

E1. Connect the circuit of Fig3.77 with the values given and calculated in P1.

Fig 3.77 Experimental Class A Direct Coupled Amplifier

a) Measure ICQ and VCEQ and compare the measured values with the thoretical ones
calculated in P1. If there is a big difference between the calculated and measured V CEQ
values, use the 10K pot to overcome this problem. (VCEQ=6V)

b) Using the low putput of the signal generator, adjust Vi=100sinwt mV. Measure Vi and Vo
on the CRO and increase the input voltage until the maximum undistorted output signal is
obtained. Record the values of Vi and Vo and calculate the voltage gain (Vo/Vi) at the
maximum output voltage swing position.

E2. Connect the circuit of Fig 3.78 with the values given and calculated in P2.

a) Adjust Vi=1sinwt V. Measure Vi and Vo on CRO and increase the input voltage until the
maximum undistorted output signal is obtained. Observe the crossover distortion at the
output.

6
b) Record the output voltage values corresponding to the input signal of 2sinwt and 6sinwt
V, respectively. Find a relation between the input and output voltages.
