Computer Has A Virus? Its A Scam.
Fake tech expert calls and suspicious online pop-ups
try to scare you, steal money and identity.
You get a call from a tech expert, who says he is work-
ing for a well known company and that your computer
has a vicious virus. The so-called expert says that you will
lose everything and that your private information will
be stolen, from your banking information to your social
insurance number. According to him, the only solution
is to buy a miracle antivirus software or give him remote
access to your computer so he can fix the problem directly.
Under pressure, this might seem like the right (or only)
choice, but be careful, its a scam.
Hang up on tech experts claiming your computer has a
virus. Its a scam. Fraudsters call people at random, pre-
tending to be legitimate computer experts. They try to
scare you into giving them money or control over your
computer by downloading a bogus software or sharing
passwords. This scam, known as scareware, is on the rise.
This scam also takes the form of pop-up messages that
appear on your screen, alerting you that your computer
has been infected.
While both the calls and the pop-ups lead you to
believe that you are receiving assistance from well-known
software or technology companies, the truth is that you
risk losing money to a fake service, having your computer
blocked and even having your identity stolen. The best
way to avoid falling victim to a scareware is to be wary
and to protect your computer at all times:
Hang Up: Most genuine software companies wont call
you to tell you that your computer is compromised. If you
get a call, its fake.
Keep Your Information Secure: Dont share your login
information (any usernames or passwords) or computer
information (IP address). There is no guarantee that the
person on the other end of the line is who they say they
are. Use strong passwords.

Protect Your Computer: A variety of products are avail-
able to protect your computer, from anti-viruses, to anti-
malwares, to firewalls. In some instances, they can be
acquired as a suite. When kept up to date, they can reject
malicious programs, such as scareware, from getting onto
your computer in the first place.
Update Your Web Browser And Operating System:
They both have integrated defense systems that are
updated regularly to keep pace with the latest virus and
other malware. By ensuring that your operating system
(for example: Windows, OS X or Ubuntu,) and your web
browser (for example: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer
or Safari,) are up to date, you will be better protected.
Turn Your Pop-Up Blocker On: Most web browsers
have an integrated pop-up blocker that prevents pop-ups
from appearing on your screen. This might protect you
from fraudulent pop-ups.
If youve been the victim of a scareware or other fraud,
or if you have information about this type of scam, report
it to the Canada Anti-Fraud Centre, 1-888-495-8501; the
Competition Bureau, 1-800-348-5358 or the RCMP.

On The Road Touring Workshop
The BC Touring Council (BCTC), presents On the
Road: A Touring Workshop for Aspiring, Emerging Per-
forming Artists. The goal of the workshop is to increase
opportunities for aspiring, emerging artists between 18
34 to train and work alongside creative professionals in
the performing arts.
The two-day workshop, on Wednesday and Thursday,
June 7 and 8 at the Adventure Hotel in Nelson, covers
topics such as tour planning, attending industry and con-
tact events, applying to showcase, career and financial
management, marketing and promotion and more. Par-
ticipants are invited to participate in five minute pitch/
perform sessions and receive feedback from trainers.
Often featured at industry events, pitch/performs offer an
opportunity to showcase their talent to buyers.
The workshop is intended to serve aspiring, emerging
artists interested in enhancing their knowledge about per-
forming arts touring. For the purposes of this program,
aspiring, emerging artists are defined as those, between
18 34 years old, who have mastered the basic techniques
of their art form through education or apprenticeship and
are in the early stage of launching a professional career.
Registration is free for BCTC members. Membership is

7th Annual Oxygen Art Market
Every year, the Oxygen Art Market attracts hundreds
of art lovers to the Oxygen Art Centre and its no won-
der! Over 40 established and emerging Kootenay artists
submit their paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and
other 2D work for this weekend long event. The work
is hung salon style, in the manner of the Acadmie des
BeauxArts exhibitions in Paris at the turn of the century,
where work was hung on every available wall space from
ceiling to floor. With over 150 pieces on display, the hang-
ing is a major undertaking for the volunteer committee,
and it makes for a striking event.
Oxygen Art Market is an opportunity to experience
firsthand the breadth of work made by West Kootenay
artists and to get yourself a piece of original, locally made
art! With 50% of the sales given to the Oxygen Art Cen-
tre, the Art Market has become an important fundraiser
for the Centre. Oxygen is governed by a collective of pro-
fessional visual artists, filmmakers, theatre artists and
writers. As one of Canadas 100 or so artist-run centres,
Oxygen shares the common mandate to provide an alter-
native forum for contemporary art, outside of commer-
