Overview:
This grant funding proposal addresses a compelling need of the high school students of
Southern Humboldt and matches it with targeted investments of the school district and the
proposed generous support of the Mel and Grace McLean Foundation. This project calls for
investment in a new high school mathematics curriculum and the required accompanying
technology. Teaching and administrative staff have engaged in a year-long assessment of math
at South Fork High School, and these recommendations have been submitted to the school board
for review and approval. The proposed school budget will call for the district to use general
funds to pay for more than 80% of the cost of implementing this new math program, but we are
asking that the McClean Foundation support us with an investment in the technology portion of
this new program in the form of acquiring one classroom set of Chromebooks with a charging
cart.
Southern Humboldt respectfully requests the consideration of this grant by the McLean
Foundation as it addresses the foundations missions by leading to the educational success of
high school students living in Southern Humboldt and will have a lasting effect on the
community.
Brief Description of Our Organization: The Southern Humboldt Unified School District is a
geographically mountainous area about half the size of Rhode Island. It covers approximately
773 square miles of steep terrain, deep river valleys, large Redwood State Parks, coastal
mountain ranges and a small ocean fishing community. Employment in the southern part of
Humboldt County is supplied mostly by timber, commercial fishing, tourism, the school district
and state agencies. The Southern Humboldt Unified School District consists of what was
formerly nineteen separate school districts. These original nineteen independent districts were
combined into one unified district in 1948. The district is currently comprised of five elementary
schools, one junior high school, one high school and Osprey Learning Center, which is an
umbrella for alternative programs including Independent Study and Continuation classes. Our
current enrollment is 780 students.
After reviewing various integrated and traditional math curricula, the South Fork High
School Mathematics Department has chosen to adopt the Pearson Integrated HS Mathematics
Common Core. This is an integrated math course that will align with our current mathematics
sequence. This program meets the criteria which we have sought. It provides resources for
students of diverse levels of understanding and needs for remediation, provides support to our
English language learner population, and it comes with computer software for tracking student
progress and providing individualized practices and remediation according to individual student
needs.
The daily class work with this program at each of its levels requires having an available
set of Chromebooks for each student during class time. The Chromebooks will allow students to
view lessons and instructional videos that are part of the curriculum we are proposing to
purchase. Our school uses Chromebooks in other classes, and they are well-supported at our
school by our districts 80% Technology Manager and by numerous teachers who use them on a
regular basis. In addition, our school district has invested in ample wifi bandwidth for the future
so that additional Chromebooks will run efficiently.
The school district will be committing at this time to funds to support this programs
disposable workbooks, software licences, and personnel development costs of implementing this
program for five years.
